I love winter paddling, especially when you get one of those rare perfect days of calm skies and see for miles. Great with less cars on the road and easier parking too 🤪

I think a good point to add is to actually test your gear in a controlled environment. Better to find out your gear doesn't keep you warm enough by testing it in a few feet of water at the beach with a friend than during a capsize in rough conditions. People tolerate cold differently as well, so what works for some people may not work for you, perhaps you need more layers, or less etc. Example, I tested my farmer john with a paddling jacket and wool sweater today in 4C water before I attempt to go out kayaking in the cold.

I can only kayak into late November before the ice starts to really solidify. Then it's snowshoeing and waiting until April or May.

Great video! It's super challenging in Arizona to dress for the water temp...while on the kayak I'm melting in the sun. Even in winter, the intensity of the sun beating down can be suffocating (at least to me). But the water temps can be in the 50's and 60's. That said, I don't always paddle in AZ, so your advice is really helpful for those times. Thanks!

@@HeadwatersKayak Pretty sure you were there in one of the hot months though. The water is warmer then. LOL I'm talking about paddling in the winter when the water is really cold, but the sun is still hot--if I"m dressing for the colder water...I'll melt. Eeek.

Glad you brought up another fishing bib like the old discontinued raptor bibs from NRS. I’ve been looking for a alternative.

My problem is overheating, went out today ( -2 ) pretty much with your 2 piece set up and a woolly hat and within 15 minutes I was down to a long sleeved T and a baseball cap! I stayed on my benign local river though

Ever think about using a scuba dry suit that you could put a little air in to make it even warmer

Another great video. I too am in Southern Wisconsin and would love to paddle until ice-up. Question is immersion gear. Paddle mostly protected lakes or lazy flowing rivers w/o rapids. I have looked at and thought about paddling pants and jackets but even if the risk of a water exit or capsize are small they still exist. Which is what brought me to this video yet I am still uncertain which way to go.

When in doubt get a dry suit option you won't regret it. The new Loki Drysuit from Level Six is awesome because it doesn't use Latex so its a lot more comfortable for recreational paddlers.

Not a fan of latex gaskets. My Ocean Rodeo has those. I'll take the couple of thimbles that get through my other suit in exchange for the added comfort most any day. Pogies for the win though.

Oh man winter paddling? Seems awesome because no one else would be on the water but seems dangerous too. I’m in Wisconsin, if I could shadow another winter paddler I’d be more inclined to do it, maybe I’m being a bit too timid.
