Brilliant video! I'm seriously thinking of getting a log cabin and seeing this has given me confidence that, if erected properly, it's a very likely acquisition. I guess finding good installers like you guys is key, too. Many thanks indeed.

Hi mate My sister-law is having a log cabin built I went over today and checked the base and who ever built the base has used metpost and not dug a hole and used postcrete. The log cabin is 13ft by 10ft and there is 3 post on each end and 3 in the middle they have used 4x2 timber and there is flex in the floor to me this isn’t a suitable structure to put a log cabin on would I be right to say that.
Hi mate I also want to do my own dunster house but could you please help me where I get get the materials was struggling a bit and like a quotation of the materials I need where can I get them good job mate nice work though I look forward to getting your reply thanks in advance

I bet it’s warmer! If it’s a big project, get in touch!
Absolutely superb video👍 I wonder how one would set about this type of build if the structure was to house a car and/or a (extremely) heavy home gym and around 500kg of free weights (concrete slab is already in situ)and retain the ability to revert to a standard summer house should the property be sold.?
@allthingsgardenbuildings

Ohh this one’s easy! Treated bearers around the perimeter of the building and just left as concrete inside. Once you’re ready to sell the property just give us a shout and we will come and put a floor in and raise the garage doors 🚪 Thanks for the kind words, let us know if you’re ready to purchase a building !
So what’s stopping the rain running onto the concrete slab soaking into the plate and causing rot? Should you not have put a brick course with DPC down and sat the plate onto that 👍

This is exactly what has happened to ours and i am heartbroken, i don't know how to fix it
@oaken8

DPC on treated bearers with an air gap would make low cost sense for longevity.
@tombeavis3671

It would be fine if the slab was the exact size then the rain won’t run on to it

This is a major fault in these builds. We inherited a large cabin when we bought a house and have discovered water has been entering in between the wall and floor plate as there is no tongue and groove at that part of the structure. In the place it’s most needed! Needless to say there is a lot of rot. A totally insane design and I’m not sure what the solution is.
@karls3777
Жыл бұрын
Bitumen over the floor plate and mastic the join between slab and timber then cover with Self adhesive flashing over the batten and on to the cladding. It’s works. I had a similar issue. Leaks no more
brilliant video,great detail, do you anchor the cabin to the bearers.
@allthingsgardenbuildings
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, Yes! We always screw the building down to the bearers, not often do we fix to the concrete , as the weight of the building stops it going anywhere , hope this helps 👍 -Jordan

Is this the Norland Bingham 6 - ours arrived today and I wanted to watch a video of it being assembled. This looks very similar
@allthingsgardenbuildings
5 ай бұрын
It is not, but designs are very similar here in the UK! Hope the build went okay!
No DPC under the bottom plate and that slabs to big so water will just run underneath and rot it out eventually.
Great channel! Can I ask, how do you secure these to the ground, or is it not necessary? Thanks
@allthingsgardenbuildings
Жыл бұрын
Not necessary weight wise, but a concrete anchor would work, or just screws and brown 6mm plugs.

@@allthingsgardenbuildings Cheers!!
Do you recommend a concrete sub base? Or can you use a compacted type 1 sub base?
@allthingsgardenbuildings
2 жыл бұрын
Hiya, You'd use 50mm compacted type 1 as a sub-base and then 100mm of concrete . You could ask that plastic fibres are added into the mix if you're having a volumetric wagon bringing the concrete. Otherwise, A131 Steel reinforcement mesh is what we use. This works perfectly with 6x2 inch timbers. Hope this helps.
What kind of logs are these?
Nice job. Out of interest, you don’t leave a spacing between roof and floor boards for expansion ?
@allthingsgardenbuildings
Жыл бұрын
We usually leave a gap of around 10-15mm on the last floorboard. Whatever the skirting board will let us leave in primarily. On the roof boards we just don’t have them super tight. If you don’t roofboard right to the edge of roof purlins your fascia board won’t sit square as it needs purchase.

How much does it weigh and how thick is the concrete base?

About 1.5 ton-2 ton and concrete should be 100mm thick with a 50mm sub base of type 1 Mot
how do you stop the rain water on the slab being sucked up by the timber
@darrylkennedy2125

My thoughts exactly. 😮
@brendanmcgorisk7161

It's a flaw in the design. The bearers and insulation should not be sitting on the concrete pad as they'll just soak up water and, over time, the bearers will rot. Plus it will destroy the insulation. I would place sheets of waterproof scaffolding plastic across the entire pad, and place the bearers and insulation on top. That would prevent the bearers and insulation sheets soaking up water. It needs gutters also. Without them, the amount of water that will flow off that roof and splash up on the bottom timbers will make a real mess and will cause water to run under the structure from the rear. I can't understand how someone would go to the expense of building a structure like this and not do it adequately.
