Want the chickens to lay the EGGS in the NESTING BOXES ?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

We design a Special Room to hold the nesting boxes so the chickens will lay their eggs in there, so we don't have to search for the eggs all over.

I have the same type of nesting boxes. I bought a roll of fake grass/outdoor green carpet. I cut a square to size to fit each box. I put 2 in each one (one in top of the other). When the hen dirties the box, I just pull it out and hose it off. There's a spare in there until the freshly cleaned (wet) one dries. Have a blessed day!

Oh boy chickens, poultry is my favorite type of livestock! Are you guys planning to get a specific breed? Stay away from big hatcheries if you want quality and longevity... that’s all I can say. I’d recommend some heritage breed that you like from a small breeder that breeds for quality, good tempered birds. Good genetics, diet, and environment make for happy birds, good luck!

We ran a turkey farm in NC as a side gig. 7500 turkeys in each barn. 7 barns. In the summer with all the big wall curtains down and the fans running it was still hot! Only difference between here in the panhandle of Florida where I live now and NC is the heat just starts sooner and stays longer. So make sure you have plenty of air moving. You may need more ventilation on your side walls. Maybe hinge some of the upper wall panels and cover with hardware cloth. So you can still close in the winter. You know, the 2 days of the year we have winter here.

First of all, I really appreciate your videos. They inspire me and I like how straightforwardness and sensibility built into the construction plans. I am curious about a metal building for a chicken house in a very hot state like Florida. I keep chickens and have had to plant a little pasture on the uphill side of the chicken run that can be watered down to cool the hot breeze/wind in order to keep the run at a decent temp. We also use walls made of chain link with chicken wire over the bottom half so keep raccoon hands out of the run. One innovation... we got tired of cleaning out the laying boxes, so I built a frame that will hold Costco frozen food boxes that are big enough for laying boxes. I still line them with excelsior nesting pads and fresh PDZ treated straw, but when I'm done with them, I just chuck the whole box, or break it apart to use as weed block and compost. Regarding rattlers, one friend took a year to raise up king snakes (we live in Southern Cal) and then released them. King snakes eat rattlers, literally, and on her acreage rattlers were not spotted for quite some time afterwards.

@@HollisNancysHomestead Even if they didn't, it's wise to have "extra", so that sections, or even individual boxes, can be closed off for cleaning/sanitizing or repair. I think that maybe the near-capacity use of the new boxes might indicate calm, happy chickens that come from being treated with respect, as opposed to stressed, fearful animals treated with indifference or cruelty.

Most of the little snakes that look like tiny rattlers are actually rat snakes, non venemous, but they do eat the eggs. They are beneficial though, eating field rats and mice. Just a suggestion...her work station will get mighty dusty with just chicken wire. My coop is built like yours, had a fan like yours too. Several of my first chickens, too many actually, have died from heat exhaustion in this Florida heat when I first moved here. So what we did is removed the top sheet metal wall panels and surrounded these openings with hardware cloth like you put on your little window. Better air movement and heat escape.

Our Black Australorps laid eggs (light brown) all 12 months, and molting was VERY minimal. I loved that they were friendly, quiet, and such great foragers... they saved me a lot of feed money since they loved grass clippings, weeds, worms, and kitchen waste. Every Spring, at least one would become broody, we'd leave her alone, and shed give us another 10 or so chicks. Sooo, then we'd harvest the 10 oldest chickens for baking or the slow-cooker.

No, we saved up for many years to get here and setup the homestead. The money never seems to go as far as we needed it to. God will take care of the rest👍

@@HollisNancysHomestead I hope you don't have to put up with too many disrespectful jealous fools. If it wasn't for their meanness, I might feel sorry for them. Maybe your patience and kindness in relating life lessons and factual information will make some of them think twice about making assumptions and being rude.

It's in the videos! New tomato boxes in the new tomato garden; the Earth Garden with the new perimeter box bed; the brand new harvest area; a fish cleaning station complete with huge sink and a worm farm; and now this chicken mansion. These videos were all put up within the last month. These things don't just appear suddenly out of thin air; Hollis and Nancy are working very hard (and quite quickly!) to make this a very fine homestead!

Not trying to be confrontational but I have to say this. It is a known fact that what one truly believes is apparent in one's words and actions. Asking for a blessing, and getting it, is a process. It is not magic. Jesus said, "If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” Preparation to receive an answer to a prayer, because there is no doubt, is a statement of faith. They believe they will have a properly and fully functioning homestead. They dreamed, prayed, worked, saved, and practiced in Virginia. They believe and have been faithful to that belief for a long time. They do it God's way. That's the main theme of everything I've ever gotten from them. The chickens and veggies will come, in abundance. And besides, when have you ever seen Hollis, a professed OCD'er, not be prepared for whatever he hopes for? LOL!
