Waltz Jump Tutorial on Roller Skates

A Waltz Jump is a 180º jump that begins on one foot, and lands on the other. This jump begins in a forwards rolling motion, and lands rolling backwards.
Prior to learning the Waltz Jump, you should feel comfortable performing a Two Foot Jump, and a 180º Turn Jump. A skater should additionally be comfortable falling before training any jumps. Like all jumps, it is essential to begin and land a Waltz Jump on a bent knee.
A Waltz Jump has four positions: The “Takeoff'' position, “Loading” and “Air” position, “Landing” position, and “Check” position. The body's center axis must be maintained throughout the jump to ensure stability for a safe landing.
Position 1: The “Takeoff” Position
To begin a Waltz Jump (rotating counterclockwise): Begin with your left skate on a bent knee, and the right leg extended to the rear. Our arms will begin in an “L” position, with the left arm in front, and the right arm extended out to the side. To begin a Waltz Jump (rotating clockwise): Begin with your right skate on a bent knee, with the left leg extended to the rear. Clockwise jumpers will prep with the right arm in front, and the left arm extended out to the side. Check the body's axis to ensure that the hips are square, shoulders are rolled back, and the head is nice and tall.
Position 2: The “Loading” to “Air” Position
From position 1, bring your free leg in to meet your skating leg by bending both knees. While you bend both knees, drop your hands down with them. Your arms in the “Loading” position, leading up to the jump, will feel like you're scooping ice cream into a ballet first position. Once we’ve dropped down into our “Loading Position”, jump off of the skating leg while thinking about lifting the body straight up into the air as a unit (i.e. maintaining the body's axis.) While in the air, lift your left knee to switch legs, landing on the opposite leg.
Position 3: The “Landing” Position
Counterclockwise jump example: Land with the right leg on a bent knee, with the left leg still lifted in front of you.
Position 4: The “Check” Position
Once you feel grounded and balanced after landing, “Check” by swinging your free leg to the rear and extending the arms out away from the body.
