Walther P88-C Review: The Most Wonderful Wondernine (P226 be like, WTF?!)

See why the P88c 9mm is MORE wonderful than the Beretta 92, 5906 and Sig P226 (NOT the CP88!)

    I agree with your assessment, I have had many Beretta 9mms and own a SIG 226, WHICH I FAVOR over the Beretta but the Walter P88 is in my opinion is the best of them all. I've wanted one for some time. I think its cost may have inhibited our selection in military trials.

    Thanks, man! I appreciate you watching. There's no question that the Sig P226 and the Beretta 92 are two of the most vetted, qualified and capable military service pistols of all time. They're both fantastic--though the 92 has always felt a little more natural in my hands. Still... the P88 offers a level of refinement the neither of those quite reach (in my opinion). If the P88 platform had the benefit of all the refinements and revisions that the 92/P226 had, I think it would have been a different story. Still... like you said... the P88 was probably cost prohibitive in terms of its complexity. Thanks again for the comment!

    Well done, as a true Walther P88 lover I really cannot tell you how much I appreciate this video. Very well done, anybody who has the slightest interest in the P88 series should take this all in and go out there to get one and enjoy this marvelous design. Now I hope you get also the P88 and you will be baffled, get one above the 6000 s/n to have the latest modifications, they are as perfect if not a step up from the P88. Especially accuracy at target level. Its every money well spend on that one too. Thanks again. AMP from GA!

    Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm really happy you enjoyed the video. I don't have to tell you that the P88 is truly a special gun... it's something I'm glad I had the opportunity to share on KZread. This P88c is really the crown jewel in my collection. Would definitely love to get a full-size P88 at some point. Thank you so much for the insight on the serial number. That's the kind of information that's really valuable when you're looking at classic guns. In any case, I really appreciate you reaching out and taking the time to comment. I've got some more reviews on the way... hopefully will have one on my East German Makarov next week. Just been super busy with work lately. In any case... take care! --Matt

    Very informative. I think this is the first time one of these ever caught my attention. I dissed Walther for years after shooting several PPK's owned by friends in the early 1990's Until I bought my P99 a couple of years ago I had never owned a Walther and now I have 3, P99, PPSm2 and a PDP compact. Seeing this video I will definitely be on the look out for one of these. Looks like a winner of an old gun.

    Yeah, the P88 is something special. I wanted one since I realized they existed, many years ago. Thrilled to own one. The P5 is fantastic too. Had a German PPK for a while. Freakin' laser beam. Hurt to shoot. Finicky with magazines/feeding. I prefer the Makarov PM for a small blowback pistol. Just as accurate, in my experience. Unfailingly reliable.

    Thank you for the review. I write from Europe (Spain) and have recently been offered one of those guns at a very good price. But I am concerned about the availability of spare parts. After watching your video and reading Walther forums, despite the lack of replacements I think maybe it's worth getting the gun for the price at which they offer me. Thanks again, congratulations on the videos and good luck with the channel.

    Thank you so much for the comment and the encouraging remarks! I think you'll be thrilled with the P88. It's such an excellent pistol and worth a premium, I think, over other more common guns. As far as spare parts.... are you familiar with Numrich? Just Google search it, if not. I was VERY surprised to see so many parts available for the P88 series guns. I just bought an extra recoil spring, actually. Completely new. I read somewhere (Walther forum, I think?) that Walther sold all their spare parts for the P88 series to Numrich. And, from what I can tell, that's true. They seem to have everything you'd need for a P88/P88c. They are in the USA, hopefully they ship to Europe. Good luck, my friend! And thanks again.

    I believe the lack of success of this pistol led to the company being acquired by Umarex and taken out of the hands of the Walther family. It's a shame since throughout the 20th century Walther was at the forefront of pistol innovation and now it is a mere shadow of its former self. With the P99 set to be discontinued this year, different versions of the PDP are really all they'll be offering (aside from the PPK). I guess their problems started with the P5, as SIG was able to consistently underbid them for German police contracts (amusingly despite SIG's known history at the time for aggressive bidding, conspiracy theories still exist claiming that SIG's XM9 bid was secretly disclosed to Beretta). Great video but I believe your comment at 6:53 is inaccurate, as the Beretta 92 performed well on the XM9 Mud Test though the SIG P-226 did fail and was given a "Pass" anyway since as the GAO report states: "A strict interpretation of the mud test results would have eliminated SACO [SIG], an otherwise superior candidate, and left only Beretta in contention."

  • @HipsterTactical

    @HipsterTactical

    Interesting. Personally, I feel the P99 truly was a groundbreaking, innovative design. It still stands alone as basically the only DA/SA striker-fired system. And I suppose the fact that the PPQ and the PDP are basically still P99s with SAO triggers is an homage to the design. I just wish they'd pull the P99/AS system forward to the PDP and Q4. You're probably right about the P226--and that would explain why Sig decided to incorporate "mud rails" on the P226s of the mid '80s. In any case... thanks for watching commenting!

    @@HipsterTactical The P99 "Final Edition" is on my "must have" firearm purchases this year. I'm not sure how I feel about striker-fired pistols with fully tensed strikers (with no thumb safeties) for anything but competition use. It seems to me like a somewhat reckless way of trying to distinguish a product in the overly saturated polymer market. Interesting that prior generations were more convinced of the necessity of the safety measures that modern manufacturers seem to be in a competition to repeal. For me at least, with such a limited threshold for error, I would lose some of that intimate connection I have with my favorite pieces.

    I had the pleasure of shooting a P88, which was also the first time I had ever shot a full-sized 9mm pistol. It just felt like pure quality- like an old Mercedes. The slide felt like it was riding on a cloud, the trigger pull was crisper than I thought and it didn’t have too much recoil.

    I've been looking for a P88 compact for a while at a decent price (not really able to spend $2k on a pistol right now) But I think besides the high price, one of the commercial failures of the P88 was that it wasn't really used by Hollywood. SIG has never made an inexpensive pistol, but people have been willing to shell out the cash for guns they see in movies.

    That's a great point. I literally looked at IMFDB for movies featuring the P88. One of the only ones I could find was Beverly Hills Cop III (I think? It's the amusement park one). One of the bad guys has a full-size P88... for, like, 2 minutes. I honestly think the P88 Compact would have made a great Bond gun (compact, classy, Walther). But, by the late '90s, I suppose it made sense to kinda shift into the modern era, with the P99. Don't get me wrong--the P99 is a wonderful pistol. But there's something a bit more special about the P88. Keep an eye out for one, man. Hopefully you'll find one at a decent price, somewhere. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment.

    Comment from Germany: After a long time, I visited the Walther Forum again and came across your link to your review of the Walther P88 and thus also to this video. It is a very informative and entertaining video for the viewer, which can be recommended. However, I have to point out two points of criticism. 1) Although you show at the very beginning that all pistols were checked for safety before recording the video, the hammer of the P88 is cocked for almost the entire video, as is the case with the Smith & Wesson pistol shown for comparison. I think that's fundamentally problematic. Your video will not only be seen by experienced gun owners, but also by beginners. When such novices see that one can "wave around" a gun with a cocked hammer without any problem, there is a danger of imitation without the appropriate prior safety clearance. There is also no compelling reason to always show the pistol with the hammer cocked. 2) For me, a video like this involves disassembling the gun in front of the audience and then showing and discussing the individual parts.

  • @HipsterTactical

    @HipsterTactical

    Hello, sir. Thank you for the comments and compliments. As for safety considerations... as you noted, I have clearly stated that all guns shown are cleared and safety checked PRIOR to filming. Moreover, I made sure to ACTIVELY SHOW the P88c being cleared in the beginning of the video. Twice. This is why the hammer remains back--evidence that the slide has been retracted and the gun is clear. As for the guns I show for just for a few seconds... I felt the initial qualifier was sufficient to assure people the guns were safe. And since the guns were cleared in the same manner as the P88, the hammer remains back on those as well. Plus, I NEVER touch the trigger on those guns. My reviews are generally not intended to be "technical" in nature, unless some aspect of the design/parts pertains to the point(s) I am making (such as the lockup, with the respect to the P6, as shown).

    Up until about 5 years ago, I was a member of an examination committee that examined prospective hunters for the acquisition of a German hunting license. My exam area wasn't weapons handling, it was wildlife science. Nevertheless, I was of course also involved in the handling of the weapons. If, after the safety check, an examinee had held the pistol in his hand with the hammer cocked when answering further questions about the pistol in question, he would certainly have failed, unless he was specifically asked to cock the hammer. And if the examinee had put the pistol back with the hammer cocked after completing the exam, he would have failed as well. So much for the requirements regarding weapon handling in a German hunter's examination - I think these requirements are basically correct. But there is a saying: different countries, different customs.

    @@gemor2843 No worries. And thank you for your perspective. I realize that my audience is NOT entirely in the United States... and I think that's a good thing. It's always nice to see people in other countries comment and (hopefully) enjoy the content. That said, I am American, so, I guess it's to be expected that the customs/standards/approaches shown in the videos would reflect that. To me, whether or not the hammer is cocked or down--after you've actively cleared it--is irrelevant to whether or not the chamber is loaded. Further, I have seen other KZreadrs use a written safety disclaimer in the beginning, as I have. It seemed like a good idea, so embraced that approach. In any case, thank you again. Tschüss!
