Even considering the rougher cue balls and less rolling cloth of those days, Walter Lindrum is still the greatest billiards player of all times.

Don't forget the balls were made of ivory as well, so heavy contacts every shot

Great post, I loved it ! Is English billiards still practiced in the UK, especially in competition, or has the success of snooker made it disappear?

There are areas within England where it is more popular than others, particularly around Norfolk & Tyneside. It is a fast, aggressive game which I find it much more fun than snooker. Snooker is more tactical & more interesting to watch, which is what makes it more popular. Ever wondered why there is a baulk line on a snooker table? That is because it is not really a snooker table at all. Snooker is played on an English Billiards table.

@@iandennis3582 I played in a few ABC tournaments about 15-20 years ago because few play billiards in my area. I got completely thrashed but enjoyed it because the people were really friendly.

I don't know the rules for billiards but it must be very one sided for a man like Lindrum to score a break of +4000 in one go, I wonder how long that took him? I saw that he beat Joe Davis for the world championship in 1932, which was while Davis was on his way to winning his 15 world championships. Didn't Lindrum also win the snooker world championship twice? How many world billiards championships did Lindrum win? Did Joe Davis win any world billards championships? I'm wondering who out of the two was the most successful cross over player (in snooker and billiards) - Joe Davis or Walter Lindrum? I can see how billiards could help snooker players' cue ball control and safety game. I wonder if Ronnie O'sullivan practices billiards to hone his cue ball control and safety game?

HI Davis became world billiards champ in 1927/28 but at that time the english player Walter Smith was unofficially recognized as the world's best, Smith had won the worlds billiards in 1920 and 23 but his future career was plagued by arguments with the governing body of billiards, in the meantime an astonishing talent was growing in Australia !! Walter Lindrum eventually arrived in England for matches against Smith, Smith actually won their first match but then Lindrum took control producing devastating scoring in future games, Lindrum basically was on another planet with respect to Billiards, in the early 30's playing against the other billiards greats of the time Lindrum would give up to 7,000 points start !! and still win, he was a master of the close cannon yes but he also excelled at top of the table play and played very quickly, he simply scored faster than his opponents could, there is much to say but there is a lot on line now about Walter and id suggest you have a look, also there is film of him making several breaks, he was simply one of the greatest cuemen ever to play on the green baize, cheers @@JK-pd7jf

I'm sorry, but with thirty 'nursery cannons' I could be a world record holder.

Walter makes the game look easy. It is far from it. You have to be amazing to keep the balls together for nursery cannons for more than a few shots.
