When this tree popped up in my garden 20modd years ago I thought it was an Ash. still don't know who/what planted it.

Wow - what a beauty. Nature took a strong hand in this one. Impossible to create that kind of character on purpose. I don't know much about walnuts even though they grow around here. Very interested to watch this tree take shape!

Thanks Sue. I don't really know much about Walnuts either, to be honest. I do know Vine Weevil love them so gave this an extra helping of nematodes. Stay safe
Really interesting tree Sid, but now you have me seeing Jabba too. May the fourth be with you!

I missed a trick there didn't I? Should have released this one tomorrow! Doh! Stay safe
At the start of the video, as you spin the walnut around, it reminds me of a snail. :)

Cool. Perhaps I should call him Brian. Stay safe Beth.
Our yard (in a rural area) is full of black walnut saplings. Many of them are well over fifty yards or more from the nearest mature, nut bearing trees. The saplings and other young trees were all 'planted' by the local squirrel population. It is a common practice for the squirrels to bury the nuts then retrieve at least some of them later in the year. As is often the case, many of the nuts are never recovered and tend to sprout up the following year. It is likely that is how your walnut bonsai appeared seemingly out of nowhere.

Sounds right except I've lived in this house 30+ years and never seen a squirrel so don't think that is the case. Also there are no mature walnuts nearby so it is a mystery. Stay safe

I've just been waiting for it to recover from the Vine Weevil attack a couple of years ago. Hopefully it will be fine going forwards. Stay safe

Thank you. I guess you know I do too! Stay safe
Super dog in that cape Sid, I wonder if the tree had a near death experience as some humans say they have, one hell of a walnut tree that is Sid, I do like hollow trees some thing about them pleases me, I paint the inside of the hollow trees I have with black stain, it looks like the hollow goes further in and looks a bit more of a mystery. It would be great to see it in full leaf. All the best mate.

Well, that's fitting as hecis a super dog. I'll do a follow up later in the year. The leaves on this are quite large however. Stay safe Joe
How lovely, the tree looks shape looks beautiful. I stumbled across your video as a squirrel have planted a walnut tree in my tiny garden and I have potted it into a vase hoping to keep it alive as a bonsai…not much of a gardeners so fingers crossed. How many years have you been growing yours?

I've had this one over 20 yrs at least. Nearly lost it when Vine Weevils ate nearly all it's roots! They are tough plants though and as you saw it has survived. Good luck with yours. Stay safe
I thought Jabba before you said : )

Never seen a walnut bonsia on my KZread voyages. Look forward to seeing this in the future! It reminds me slightly of an old apple tree Nigel Saunders done not so long ago. Thanks Sid 👍🏼 take care

Don't think walnut is a popular choice for bonsai because of the large size of the leaves. But I'm sure they will reduce some eventually. Stay safe

Yes, like a lot of our natives here do, but they look stunning after some work and care. I have every confidence in you this will become a wonderful bonsai 👍🏼 just like your wisteria 👌🏻

Thanks. I'll do my best.
This is cool I’ve got a sapling 2nd year in a pot and it’s thrived! Great taper but compound leaves are a pain! You mention you thought it was an ash originally I for some reason collected an ash by chance has ended up a single leaf throw back 3rd year no compound leaves. Thanks for sharing

Thanks for watching. Compound leaves are a pain but I've managed to get some good size reduction with Ash so hope that I can achieve the same with this. Stay safe
I didn't think you could use walnut for bonsai. I've got a self set in my garden must be 4' now.

I've never worried too much about what you "can't do " in bonsai. I just made trees that make me happy even if the break " the rules" 🙂 Stay safe
