My grandmother had to make bedding with whatever she could. My grandfather would go buy a bundle of men's wool suits from the rag man and my grandmother just cut up what was good into squares and sewed them together. I had one until a few years ago. It had lasted almost a hundred years until I had a house fire.

I have about 15 quilts that were given to my husband & I when we got married & had kids from my husband’s aunts, great-aunts and even blind aunties, who made quilts! LOVE THEM ALL!

They knew how to do it back then. My Grandmother made two quilts out of leftover fabrics from reuplostering sofa and chairs. My Mom inherited them and they were used at our summer cottage at the lake. I swear the best sleeps I ever had. 🇨🇦

Our ancestors had no choice but to use whatever they had !! Some of the most beautiful quilts I’ve ever seen were handmade with scrap fabric from clothes, sheets or whatever. It really irritates me to hear people put that “skill” down!! They made quilts out of necessity, not as a hobby.

Thank you for encouraging people to complete their quilts regardless of what they can get their hands on! As someone getting back into sewing who is a bit poorer, I really feel bad when most quilters recommend expensive fabric. Thank you for doing the opposite!!

Do what you can with what you have - my life is in those words. One of my great treasures is a quilt top my grandmother pieced from feedsacks - actual feed sacks, not reproductions. I've never not had to count every penny and I rarely buy any fabric that's not on sale, but I've made dozens of wonderful quilts using a great variety of fabrics, of varying quality. While I appreciate high-end fabric when I can get it (on sale!) and afford it, I have often worked with lesser-quality fabric that I love as much, and it has held up very well (and my quilts get a lot of use, and a lot of laundering as we share our house with cats who love the quilts as much as we do). Quilts satisfy both aesthetic and utilitarian needs - one of the things I love most about them - and they can be made, used, and loved through many years, even on a tight budget.

I have a few quilts from feed sacks, I treasure them! I do appreciate some quailty fabric but I also love using things in the same thrifty manner as our grandmothers during the Great Depression. I love how something can fulfill its life as a piece of clothing and then be repurposed into a quilt and be useful yet again. 💕

I have used Walmart cottons for several projects and never had a problem with it. Some of their precut yardage is just beautiful.

I am a fan of Waverly fabrics from Wally-Mart. I’ve never had a problem with their fabric selection. It was reasonably priced for a beginner piecer 😉

I too have used Waverly fabrics often and have never had an issue with them. In fact, I've found some Waverly fabric in a 'quality fabric store' in the past.

One of the first quilts I made was with Walmart fabric. It’s been washed so many times. It’s been on the back of my husbands dual recliner. We live in Florida, so he goes without a shirt a lot. He doesn’t like his skin next to the leather. The fabric has held up so well. I’ve used W’s fabric for shirts, pants, shorts and pj’s with no problems. I do support my local quilt shop way too much…lol. I have to say Pioneer fabric from Walmart is great. I made a large beautiful modified Irish Chain quilt from it. So don’t be afraid. Some of it is super thin, but mostly pretty good.

Your fabric would make a beautiful “Around the World” quilt. I use what ever fabric from wherever I find it, if I like the print.

I love my local quilt shop and there gorgeous gorgeous fabric. But I also love my Walmart Fabric. Sometimes the best fabric is not necessary. I have fabric from Walmart that has never faded and I some that has. As you mentioned, not every quilt is an heirloom quilt. My son must have ten quilts. We even have a Harry Potter quilt for when we read Harry Potter. We did wear out one quilt that had fabric from JoAnns. It was washed every week for ten years. I knew that one piece of fabric was not strong but it was just right for that small outer border. It got knelt on every day and worn through at that point. It was the quilt I put under my handicapped son because I put a wool batting in it. I thought it would be more comfortable. For what some people consider a cheap fabric and poor quality, I think ten years of wear and tear and washing every week and sometimes two or three times a week is a decent performance. The colors also held up decently.

I agree so much. Some quilts are to be used as a utility item, for comfort and warmth. Even if they don't last 100+ years they served their purpose 🩷

I'm no fabric snob either. I absolutely adore quilt shop fabric, but for as much as I sew, those prices aren't realistic. I've been sewing for 47+ years, quilting for 34, and I've used everything, and quite honestly, some of my quilts made with bargain store fabrics have held up just as well as those from quilt shops.

I love the use what you have method. It is more like life isn’t it. I am thrifty and appreciate the utilitarian functional part of quilts. Memory quilts, keepsake quilts, using what you have, sharpens our skills and knowledge a bit. I’ve learned so much from just going with what I have. Learned skills that are absent from patterns. I love your block. Can’t wait to see the lay out for your top!

Thank you! I understand both sides of the argument about fabric quality, but I do think that quilting should be accessible to everyone and since our grandmother's used whatever they had to keep their family warm we should be able to as well! I love being thrifty and challenging myself to see how inexpensive I can make my hobbies!

I think that quilting should be inclusive and I mean inclusive of all budgets.

Yes I agree! I felt so shamed because I couldn't afford the quilt shop quailty fabrics when I first started and was shamed (face to face) for using fabric from JoAnn's. All I wanted to do was cut up some fabric and learn to quilt. I wish someone would have told me it was okay to practice on anything and everything I could get my hands on!

My beef with Walmart in Canada is that they sold fabric, then once our mom and pop fabric stores closed down, because they couldn’t compete, Walmart stopped selling fabric. 🤨

I am so sorry to hear that, I always try to support small local businesses when possible. One of my favorite LQS's just shut its doors last month (retirement), and if I was in the position to have purchased the business I totally would have done so. Breaks my heart to see small business shut down because they can't compete with the big box stores.

Same issues here. JoAnn's left town and quilt shops struggle. Now nobody man's the fabric department at Walmart and it is very limited, even with only selling precuts

This is the absolute worst situation. There used to be six fabric stores in my area. Walmart put them all out of business, except JoAnn's, which is way overpriced for the quality--not even as good as Walmart's. Now Walmart has reduced the fabric section to almost nothing, not even a package of buttons available. No patterns, nothing but some precuts. Barnes and Noble did the same thing to all our local bookstores--all gone. Sad.

The local Walmart here sells a little bit of fabric....but it's way more expensive than it's worth.. almost $20 for a couple of low quality fat quarters . I'd rather spend a little time searching thrift stores for sheets or whatever. Way more bang for.your buck and better quality fabric.

@robincadwallader7426 I went to a JoAnn's a while back across the border from Sarnia, ON, and was disappointed with the quality and pricing. I watch a lot of quilting videos, some US, and they all talk about JoAnn's. I won't go back.

That the Pioneer Woman line and I've made 2 quilts with it and had no issues with it running and washing is good. Love it actually more than the Walmart brand.

You are so right. Any spare fabric was saved, and sewn into quilts and clothing. The reason flour sacks started being printed fabrics, was because the people were making clothes from them. Our Grandparents and backwards, made everything as best as possible. An old motto: Use it up, Make it do, Wear it out, Or go without. We need to do what we can, with what we can. My observations: be consistent. If using inexpensive fabrics For a quilt that will be heavily used and washed frequently, be prepared it will wear out and fade faster. The quality fabrics held up but the others didn’t. The quilts I first sewed for family have fallen apart. They were heavily used and loved well. And I’m glad I made quilts with the fabric I could afford, Now My 40 yr old sons want me to recreate their cherished quilts! 😂 Today, for For quilts I want to last longer, I use cotton batting and invest in quality fabrics. . . I have No regrets

I have a stash of authentic feed sacks that I have been collecting and can’t wait until I have time to make a quilt with my collection. I absolutely love the quilts made with feed sacks!!

Thanks for the video. I have found affordable "fabric" by purchasing 100% cotton mens shirts from the thrift store. The thread count is high, and the colors don't run. Once I found a lovely women's 100% cotton lined long skirt. I got 5 yards of fabric for $1.50!

Wow! I’ll check out thrift stores. I did get jeans, the biggest sizes in the men’s department to cut into squares and rectangles to make a couple of quilts. I like than men’s jeans are usually 100% cotton while most women’s jeans have stretch in them.

I love this!!! I scored a ton of fabrics a few weeks ago and this will be awesome and quick. I donate a lot of tops to a charity group and they quilt and finish them to give away to different organizations. This will be quick and easy to use! Thank you for sharing! I like quilts that are like this for a change of making little blocks

First video that I totally agree with! If you don’t have the funds available or just choose not to pay that amount and you take the time to make me a quilt- your part of my heart forever. This standard that you must spend “x amount” is for the birds.

I love that you showed moving even a large mat as I dint like shifting fabric around either. A good reason to have mats of various sizes!

I have made two quilts using the Pioneer Woman fabrics. I made them during Covid or shortly after. I made both colorways as I could not decide which I liked the most. The red/blue version is 89x74. I did not use the red or yellow checked fabric, it made the design look like a summer table cloth. The other quilt is 92x92 using the one you are testing. I enjoyed sewing with this fabric as it does not fray as much as other more expensive fabrics. I have not washed the quilts, I leave that to the nephews & nieces who will get them later. I will leave washing instructions. I am not sure that the PW fabric being sold now is of the same quality as what I purchased 2 years or so ago. Nothing is the same as what was available before. I can't wait for your results.

I agree, Walmart fabric doesn't fray as much as a lot of many name brand fabrics that you pay up to 5x for

Many years ago, I picked up some Wal-Mart fabric. And used about half of it. A few months later, I picked up a yard of the exact same print at a quilt shop. A year or so later, same print but at a jobber. It was only when I made the third purchase did I get out the remainder of the Wal-Mart fabric, the quilt shop fabric and the jibber fabric.The jobber fabric and the quilt fabric were noticeably higher thread count and better hand. The print on the jobber fabric was slightly misaligned. Only noticeable if you knew. The Wal-Mart fabric sitting next to the other two was noticeably lower quality. Lower thread count, rougher feel. However, that first piece if Wal-Mart fabric that was used was in a quilt for my grandmother, passed on to my daughter after her death. It has been hard used and often washed. Its held up just fine. That is the exact bundle I got...after hemming and hawing for over a year. I love the prints. I think the thread count is lower on this fabric making it of lesser qualty, but I don't make heirloom quilts (absolutely no one to leave them to). I have been using this bundle to make bowl cozies (very cute).

I buy scrubs from the thrift stores for comic characters and novelty prints.

I bought some of the Pioneer Woman fabric too--and would never consider most WM fabrics. I fondled it a long while before deciding. LOL I bought a little, brought it home, washed it, checked it more, and went back for more.

When I was teaching myself to quilt, I used old clothes and Walmart fabrics so if it didn’t come out good then I didn’t spend a ton of money. I’ve never has a problem with color running and ruining the quilt in any areas. I still use cheaper fabric if I’m making something for my home only because I have 2 dogs and a cat and they are usually for them 😊

I wish you would not call the fabric cheap as sounds like it is lesser quality. Yes not all fabric is created equal. But your Walmart quilt will last just as long as more expensive fabrics. It is all in how you care for it. Just like you clothing, wear it and take care of it.

It's time that quilting got back to it's roots... save the "prize winners" for a separate category and let us love and enjoy our quilts... it they wear out... there's always another one backing it up!

I get what I can afford and be happy with that. If I have to use a sheet then I will use a sheet. It all works out in the end

I use all kinds of fabric from thrift stores to clothing I cut up to Walmart to the expensive stores and find that there isn’t any difference between them all for what I sew

My best fabric came from 100% cotton, used men's dress shirts. When I'm shopping at consignment shops and Goodwill, I look for 100% cotton shirts, skirts, and bed sheets (that are lightly used in colors that I know I will use).

I buy Waverly solids from Walmart - so much less expensive and no different than Kona. I have even bought their holiday FQ'S and when they have the rolled up ones because they are cute. I haven't had issues with them. I do starch all my fabric though 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

Thank you. Can you please address the issue about quilting. Big sites always make 50+ quilts a year and send them to a long armer for quilting. I would end up in debters prison from this. I cant afford a long arm quilting machine either. I quilt all my quilts myself using a walking foot and my machine. Making quilts to love and use, I'm not going to enter any in a quilt show. If I were a beginner I would feel disheartened trying to keep up. Thank you much for your videos. Just found them am subscribing as of now!

Have you tried the Quilt as you Go method? That's what I do for larger quilts....as I also don't have access to a long arm machine.

I have been to Walmart and checked out the material and I bought some solids but the material feels a little thick but if I make a quilt for an outside chair or just just a pet quilt I will use it but I love going to the quilt shop and feeling the material haha

You have to judge for yourself, Wally world or specialty shop. I use and recommend the Waverly solids. For backs it's a way to save some coins.

I think this "test" would be far a more effective way of showcasing Walmart fabrics if you weren't using a 'premium' designer line from Walmart. From what I've experienced these fabrics are only slightly higher quality than Walmart's prints and pretty much the same quality as the plain cottons, but the price point, at least in my area is exponentially higher, by the bundle. I've gotten quite a few bundles for around $10, so, as much as I love the prints on these PW/Walmart bundles (they're gorgeous), I think you should do a test with the baseline Walmart items.

Walmarts in my town only have precuts now- no more bolts. They don't even have cutting stations at any of them now.

I got a bunch on clearance today for $1!!!!

I buy the solid cottons in 3 yard bundles online. I cannot tell the difference from Kona solids by look, feel or performance. While it says Waverly Inspirations it ships as Shasson. I don’t go to quilt shops but buy at Hancock’s of Paducah. There sales cannot be beat.

I generally will not purchase fabric from Walmart but the Waver,y does feel much better quality wise. Where I live there is no one who actually works in that area so you have to call and hope that the person sent to cut fabric knows how to do it! I have purchased a few fat quarters that did seem to feel better than others - I will not purchase the prepackaged fat quarters from Joann’s as they feel terrible and are not the quality of,even their lower priced bolts.

I agree, I use what I have available. I refuse to use the cheapest thread from Joanns, it's such a disappointment. I made a quilt with it when I first started and so many seams popped. But I also can't (and won't) pay top dollar for thread either. A decent mid-tier is enough for me

I like nice thread that isn't linty. To get around the high price I ask for it for Christmas or birthday gifts. 😊 My Juki really likes Guttermann and Aurafil. If that makes me a thread snob, oh well. For fabric I cut up 100% cotton men's, gently used and high end, dress shirts that I find at thrift stores. I have quite a stash of every color out there. So, cheap fabric (in price only) and expensive thread... that's how it is for me.

Why take the trouble to make a quilt and then wash it without a colour catcher? Gently wash/rinse the fabrics first, see how much the dye runs and you have your answer.

Quilting has become the hobby of the wealthy, we mustn't lose sight of the fact that the reason quilting started was to make warm bed covers out of old clothing so that nothing was wasted, old clothes were repurposed and the family kept warm, creativity grew out of poverty into an art form.

I buy moo moo from goodwill in xxl. Cut them apart. There’s enough fabric to make a dress. With plenty for quilting left over.

The bundle you showed at the beginning is Pioneer Wooman fabrics and ypu won't find them anywhere else but Walmart and its very tough and scratchy becuse o thr way its woven snd the inks.

I made potholders with that fat quarter pack. They turned out well and I think it was about a year ago, so they've been washed a bunch now.

That's great to hear! I'm pretty sure my 6 year old claimed this quilt so it probably will get as much wear and tear as a pot holder 😅

When I first started quilting, I was a broke single mom. All I could afford was JoAnns. Back then it was 1.99yd. Now I am blessed to able to afford shop quality, and thats what I use most of the time. But I make a lot of kids quilts, and sometimes you can only get those popular novelty prints at walmart or JoAnns. I want my quilts to loved and used. I tell people, use it, love it, wash it. When it wears out, I'll make another. I now work in a quilt shop. We get young woman all the time coming in for help w patterns, embarrased about their cheaper fabric. We tell them even though we are a quilt shop we dont believe in the quilt police. Use what you can afford. Anyone who judges your quilt by the price of the fabric doesnt deserve to recieve it. No one should ever be shamed into not quilting bc they are on a budget. Some of the quilts i made over 20yrs ago with JoAnns fabric are still being used. Will they last 100yrs? No. Does that really matter? Also, no. I enjoyed making them. The recipient is enjoying using them. Thats what should matter.

I love your perspective! It seems like there are definitely a certain group of people that need to learn to mind their own quilts, if I want to make one from Walmart Fabric then it shouldn't matter to the next person as long as they are happy with theirs. I've had no problem with the $2-3/yard fabric personally.

I get most of my sewing and quilt fabric from WalMart. Have no problems with the fabric.

You know that quilters in years past used whatever fabric, flour sack, old clothing going to the rag bag, etc. Their quilts have lasted through all these years. So, in my opinion, 'quality fabric' is just a today standard that can be disregarded if you aren't able to buy higher grade fabric.

I can’t get over how you cut through that many layers….I have a hard time cutting through 2…..

That was a brand new sharp blade. When the blade starts to dull I won't even try to attempt any more than 2 layers at a time!

Walmart fabric has lowest thread counts of all places. Quilt stores have the highest thread count. It all depends on how long you expect your quilt to last. When I spend the time to make a quilt I want it to last.

While that's pretty fabric, when I opened it to a single layer it was thin and didn't pass my see through test. I do buy Walmart fabric if it passes the feel and see through test

Walmart fabric is not my favorite but sometimes the colors are perfect

I hsve noticed that Wakmart fabric fades out faster than quilt shop fabric.

My walmart put all the fabric on clearance got rid of everything .....I was so sad

Do you use cotton or polyester thread???

Depends on the application. For typical machine piecing or machine quilting I use 100% cotton. When hand piecing or hand quilting I use Polyester because cotton has a higher chance of shredding when being repetitively pulled through, especially if english paper piecing.

Did you say where to find the block layout or how many blocks you made?

I have the block measurements at the very end of this video, it was supposed to be an overlay earlier in the video I am not great at editing. The fat quarters were trimmed even to 17x19.5 and then sliced into different sizes. At 14:25 in the video is the sizes I cut.

@bobbihayes6048 yes, I laid them out 3x4, and I rotated the blocks 180° every other so the long blocks didn't line up in a straight line all the way across.

Their fat quarters and 5" squares are from China. They have major brands on the bolt

The trouble with Walmart is they may get a couple of new bolts every two to three years 😢

Why aren’t you telling us it’s the Pioneer Woman line? I am 81 and have been quilting and sewing for years. I have used Waverly fabrics for drapes and quilts for many years. Walmart fabrics are now about $5.00 a yard and I do not consider that cheap fabric. I refuse to pay $12.00 a yard. My only complaint with Walmart fabric department is the lack of seasonal fabrics this year. There was no Halloween, Thanksgiving or Christmas fabrics at my local WalMart.

Here’s one experience that I still don’t understand. I made a broken dishes pattern large quilt in quilt store fabrics…and we use our quilts…so after just a couple of washings the fabric in one of the blocks disintegrated…so I just put an honest patch over it but never had that happen before or since…maybe the dye? Exposed to some chemical? Will never know.

If you hold a piece of fabric from a quality fabric store up to the light next to ANY fabric from Walmart or JoAnn's, you will see that there is more fabric threads than air in the fabric store sample, and more air than fabric threads in the Walmart/big box store's sample. With less substance in the fabric it will shrink more, and wear poorly. If I am going to spend many, many hours of my irreplaceable time on something, I'm going to use quality tools, and quality materials. Period. Not to mention the 'hand' of the fabric. Feel Art Gallery fabric and Walmart at the same time, then tell me which you want to work with and sleep under.

I totally understand what you're saying, and I agree to an extent. For people that want to quilt but cannot afford the quilt shop quality fabrics Walmart fabrics are a great alternative. I feel that quilting is a dying art because younger people are discouraged from quilting unless they purchase the top of the line fabric, tools and equipment. I am a strong supporter of doing what you can, with what you have, wherever you are. If that involves using recycled fabrics to quilt like our ancestors used to, then do it anyways! If you want to use expensive fabric then that is totally a personal preference. Either way, quilting should be fun ❤️

BTW, tell your friend about Goodwill and the Salvation Army! I love to buy men's shirts in this places and in other thrift shops! The fabric is fabulous, and you can easily get 1-2 yards of fabric from a men's large or extra large shirt! Why they don't use this wonderful fabric in women's clothing I don't know, but I have made myself shirts from men's shirts! Especially short-sleeved 'camp' shirts for summer!@@kayla_quilts

The fabric in Walmart is too loose weave. And cheap feeling

I used some fabric from Walmart for a machine pieced hand quilted full size quilt. Within 3 years of normal use the fabric was falling apart. Never again will I use fabric from Walmart or Jo Ann's for that matter. I will only use fabric from quilt shops forc a quilt. All my quilts are machine pieced and hand quilted.

You need to wear a mic because when you lower your voice you can’t be understood.

Thank you for pointing this out. I have a mic and I used it for the video I made after this one, I really do try to keep my audio as good as I can as my mother is hearing impaired. I don't know why I forgot to mic up for this video but I do apologize, I will try to not do it again.
