    Jeremiah De La Fuente Yeah, the second thing that Backman said that was wrong (the first being "tie goes to the runner") was that "you can't call him out and then call him safe". When I heard that, I laughed out loud!!! Of course you can!! You make a call, then when the play ends, you can get help from your partner if you think you need to. If he sees something that would cause you to change your call, you do it. It's something that is done all the time.

  • @carlsaberhagen628

    @carlsaberhagen628

    9 жыл бұрын

    francobobfred True, but it isn't exactly wrong. If the ball does not beat the runner to the bag, the runner is safe. So, if the runner gets to the bag the exact same time as the ball, the ball did not beat the runner to the bag--so the runner is safe. Or, in other words, "tie goes to the runner."

  • @GBattackGO

    @GBattackGO

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Carl Saberhagen if the ball and the runner coincidentally reach the bag at the same time the question you ask yourself is, "did the runner beat the ball?" in the instance of a "tie" the runner will never ever beat the ball therefore the runner is out. But the thing about this kind of play is that its a judgement call by the umpire and I can guarantee that it will not be called the same way for every umpire.

  • @carlsaberhagen628

    @carlsaberhagen628

    8 жыл бұрын

    Kris Rule 6.05(j): "After a third strike or after the batter hits a fair ball, he or first base is tagged before he touches first base." The key word is BEFORE. A batter is out only if the batter or bag are touched BEFORE the batter reaches the bag. So, if the the batter or first base is touched "at the same time" or "after" then the batter is safe. "At the same time" is the same as a "tie."

  • @GBattackGO

    @GBattackGO

    @chuckfan1 - I think Backman knew he was wrong or at least didn't have a good case, and that's why he didn't get himself ejected for arguing. But, the umpire who made the second call is also the same umpire who made the initial call, so he overruled himself. The only information provided by the plate umpire was that the first baseman had the ball in front of him - he never said he saw a tag. So it was a murky play on all sides. Entertaining though!

    Russell Brooker the batter runner was outside of the running lane when he made contact with the first baseman. It wasn’t a case where at the every end his foot went out to touch the base. He was completely outside of the lane (except for his right foot) and as he stepped towards the base he made contact with the first baseman while moving toward getting back into the lane.

    there's no such thing as "interference" there it'd be "obstruction" that would be the proper term. Second he can be anywhere he wants if he has the ball or the ball is in flight on its way to the fielder. At that point by rule its entirely the obligation of the runner to avoid contact.

  • @alanhess9306

    @alanhess9306

    First of all, the fielder never commits interference. The term you are looking for is obstruction. But a fielder cannot be guilty of obstruction if he has the ball. Slow it down and watch it again. The first baseman had the ball before there was contact.

    Looked to me like obstruction on the first baseman. He was blocking the base runner before he actually had possession of the baseball. But that might be hard to tell at full speed.

    Slow it down. The first baseman had the ball before there was contact. There was no obstruction here.

    @chuckfan1 um, no the tie goes to the runner, always has. Not sure what kind of baseball you have been around but in MLB tie always goes to the runner by rule.

    Technically, you are correct according to the book. The problem is that there are no discernable ties in baseball. The human eye is not capable of determining a true tie so one thing happened before the other. Most umpires believe that when the play is so close you can't determine which happened first, they will get the out. One team is going to complain, so you may as well get the out.
