Hi Stephanie! Only one group is reading that book!! They are above grade level expectations for this part of the year, of course! The rest of my students are beginning to work in CVC decodables! I had just been working with that group and already had the stuff out to walk you through it!

This is so helpful. Thank you for sharing! I know you mentioned you have 15 minutes and that you probably have to do this small group lesson in two parts. How many students do you have per group? I love that the lessons are already made for you. We have a template for small groups as well, but we also plug in what heart words they are missing from our district list. I like that you focus on the heart words in the book. I often struggle to get all the parts finished in our 15-minute groups. Thank you again for sharing this! I'd love it if our district could do this with our decodables!

So I only have 17 students (😬😬 don’t throw tomatoes!!) so I am able to do groups of 3-4 that I meet with about 4 times per week with my needier groups being seen every day! The lessons already being prepped is a HUGE timesaver!!! From my understanding it was a stipend position and teachers got paid to do this over the summers to align with our lessons and our decodables that we already have. A win-win!

Susan your videos are amazing and have been so helpful in my teaching. I have a question about the sounding out you do in steps 3 and 4 of the small group activities (about minute 19). You pronounced the blends: tr-, fr-, and cr- as /ter/, /fer/, and /ker/. When I was trained in LTRS and OG we were instructed to be careful about making the r like a puppy bark sound and not with the /er/ sound. I'm just curious if that is something I should still stress when sounding things out with students?

Thank you so much giving you love all the way in south africa..your videos are so informative and helping...can you please do a video that help with words such as kite - cat, like how I can help my child understand the difference like why the other starts with K and other with C she is struggling with that and I don't know how to help. Another example is tow-saw and cow-car cause they sound similar but different when written. I'm really struggling with teaching her that.

I'm teaching first grade for the first time in the fall! Do you think first graders can sit in groups of six from the start of the year? My classroom is tiny and creating groups will save floor space. I don't want to deal with constant off-task behavior and distractions during independent working time, but putting students in pairs or rows will clutter the room.

Hey, I’m a new site sub teacher for 4th grade reading. I was wondering…. Are the lesson plans the teachers make fairly easy and don’t require much work or will I have some work in front. I’m comfortable with PE lesson planning, however, my school needs cite subs and my endorsement isn’t with reading, but in PE.

What is the difference between Fundations and Heggerty? My school just recently told us we are getting Heggerty. We have been using Scholastic for Reading and Phonics. What is your opinion on Heggerty? Also can you share the data forms you use to track your students data. I am in the process of setting up a data binder for myself and not really finding good data forms to use. Thanks, as always I love your videos and products! Enjoy your long weekend.

  • @SusanJonesTeaching

Hi Jill! Fundations is a phonics program and Heggerty is for phonological and phonemic awareness! We do both - first Heggerty (takes about 8-10 minutes per day) then Fundations for about 20-30 minutes. I enjoy Heggerty and they recently updated their manuals to move students to phonemic awareness faster which I appreciate. I have been compiling my data on Google Sheets, then I have a binder filled with some beginning of the year assessments and end of chapter units so I can easily pull from those during conferences.

Hi Natalie! I pair students up for that one and they must "check" one another before going on to the next card! It is not fool-proof, but I taught them how to do this in small groups with me first, so it's pretty good!

The template itself I believe is from Hill for Literacy which is the company we partnered with to build and design these lessons. The 10 step pyramid image ( I shared in my last video) is the template and process we follow to create the lessons!@@natalieboyer9265
