As of today WS does not mention "32.37.8" as a released firmware. If you mean 31.36.8 released 12/23/2022 that firmware does not have official V2 support. Which suggest it could cause problems.

Any chance of doing an Ultimate Gauntlet test with these, HD Zero, Vista, and new 03 Air Unit? I would love to see the data side by side like you do in this video! Great Job, Joshua!
3:34 ...when the acid kicks in. This was a really good test, thanks for the hard work and giving us a better look at the V2 system. Does the avatar V2 have any unique hardware changes from the V1 besides adding more storage and a gyro? Any differences in how it handles video compression or transmission from the V1?
Great comparison! Super helpful to see the difference rates/power levels. Any reason why no 700mw 50mbps test for the v2? Was hoping to see what that would show since the 1.2w has had known issues.
Nice camera rig!
PUPPIES! and good video! Thanks for the info Josh!
Always great to see your scientific approach, Joshua! Maybe use a logarithmic scale to display the latency data in more detail? (And then have the opportunity to explain that scale, too ;-) )
Really nice test! Is the improvement of the v2 system maybe depending on the quality of the antenna they deliver with it? I would like to see a test with the same antennas for comparison. Everyone knows that the original walksnail antennas arent't good.
I truly respect all the efforts you put into these tests. thanks for that. I fly Walksnail and truly find a major difference between 1080P and 720p, 1080p looks way better and often time really less "blocky". the 50mbps mode is in my opinion best for long range and cruising to really enjoy the beauty of what you're flying above. still, 1080 is unusable for freestyle because of the 60fps max... I believe that there's more than just numbers, especially with the Walksnail numbers that have been shown not to be true in the past (for delay at least). I love cruising in 1080p 50 mbps and freestyling at 720 100FPS 50mbps. only using 25 when needing penetration, and using it in 1080p because the image looks way better than in 720 25.

It would be interesting to do the exact same test with a known good antenna like the TrueRC on both v1 and v2 VTX‘s. As it seems that the WS antennas were not as constant as other antennas and couldn‘t hold the signal well.

Yeah, I do think they just added 50mbit, 1200mW and 1080p modes primarily and prematurely as marketing as users are used to those modes from DJI. They'll have to put a lot more work in to get the behaviour in those modes to an reliable state where real difference can be seen. My 2 cent, anyway :)
I’m tempted to get the V1 and recon HD for my plane. I have some old school Fatshark HD3. I could get the WS VRX package for them but I think the recon HD would be better ?
Walksnail is the sweetspot for me pricewise as I own fatshark hdo2. No problems with VTX v1, v2, 1s mini . Great that all vtxs are interchangable with all cameras.
Nice test setup. I thought it was a new quad at first !
I suppose the other lasting question to be answered, have they resolved the gps issue? As the FAA regs go into effect this September, this will be a more important factor for those who decide to comply with that. Everyone has their reasons.
Great information video as always! Riding the bike can also allow you to continue going past the point where you would be able to fly a quad.
Fantastic testing and comparison, Joshua! Thanks! 😃 Perhaps Walksnail should bring new developers to the mix, specially those with more knowledge about the compression algorithm. (255 something, I don't remember. 😬) Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

It sucks living out there when it comes to a few things. I paid 750 for all my dji setup including Nazgûl drone 6 s with batteries.
The Runcam Link Falcon camera, for the DJI digital video system, performs far better in low light than the Caddx Nebula Pro, or Pro Nano does. I'd really like to see a comparison of this new Walksnail V2 Pro camera vs. the Falcon camera from DJI. I wonder which is better in low light and which actually has a better usable image? So, taking what you said and what I saw from your testing, Walksnail is really truly a 25mbps / 720P system. Let's not try to make it more than it really is and claim 50mbps or 1080p mode actually improved anything, or was even usable. I think that's a fair assessment. It's great to see Walksnail come out with SINGLE BOARD options, that can be used for small micro quadcopter builds and they also have their whoop board(s). DJI, when are you gonna give us these small, lighter, single board options for micros and whoops?? WE'VE ONLY BEEN ASKING FOR THEM FOR A COUPLE OF Y E A R S ! ! (🤫Shhhhsh....you'd kinda own digital FPV if you did come out with them! It's really the only thing lacking with your digital system!) 🤔👍
If you turn the light off and rock side to side with JB's pedalling this is like a VR exercise video.
So what do you think is the best setting for the mw, Bitrate, framer ate? Also is the Foxeer Lollipop 4 UFL good to use for the vtx v2s?
Great comparison, but just wondering if the lack of active cooling on the VTX might have affected those results at all, because you'd have far more airflow in a quad than on those open air mounts whilst riding a bike.
@JoshuaBardwell

The vTX never went into overheat mode. You can see this in the screen recording. The only time you see it in overheat mode is when I was walking to get the bike after leaving the vTX powered on for a while. As soon as I start riding the bike, it cools down immediately. They don't really need a big powerful wind to stay cool. Even a slow-moving 120mm PC fan blowing nearby is enough to keep them from overheating.
@bl_fpv

@@JoshuaBardwell Also, all the tests were performed in the same config. If heating is a variable, it should be consistent across hardware and be factored out.
hey Joshua, good job!! Can you help me, or someone else... I have a v1 version, two of them. and both are unstable, they cut the image when it's a little hot. when I fly hard with my 5 inches, just a minute or two later, the image of the glasses is exhausted. and my cinewhoop, being the place where the FC and vtx install is closed to the wind, so it gets hot too. Did the same thing happen with the V2 version?? Thanks !!!

@@JoshuaBardwell In WS defense you tested this hardware so quickly you were not aware of the actual firmware that was released to support it. There is a lot of competition on youtube to get the first report out. But doing it right is not best served by that line of thinking. Also I would suggest that you have the gravitas to be able to inquire of WS before such reports if there is an associated firmware unique to the product.
@JoshuaBardwell

@@bcc1955 I agree that it's a mistake to rush to release results first, if those results don't reflect what actual users will experience. Walksnail told me the x.8 firmware was the one to use with the new hardware, and I filmed the release video and tested the hardware on that firmware, believing that x.8 was the final firmware for release. Then they released x.10 the day of release. I appreciate that WS is constantly trying to improve their products, even up to the last minute of release, but it takes time to make videos like this, and WS release schedule means it's difficult to be sure that content always reflects the absolute latest firmware. If I had known that x.10 was going to be the official release, I would have tested this on x.10. But my not knowing that doesn't reflect lack of care or rush on my part. I was making content about this system for a week. Should I wake up every morning and double-check just to be sure that a new firmware hasn't come out? If I'm halfway through making a video and a new firmware releases, should I upgrade in the middle of the video? Should I scrap the previous days' work and start over?
Great testing! Could you maybe next time use a larger pointer? Age + cellphone screen :))
I have seen this when running 50 megabits on the 1s it will never go back above say 40 until I power cycle. If Walksnail hired a few more programmers they could be a real competitor in everything except really competitive racing.

0:22 Can OBS now capture raw transport stream? Because it looks like you're simply recording off the external device with the lossless preset, which is not actually lossless.
@JoshuaBardwell
Жыл бұрын
It can't. You're right that this is not true lossless recording. The goal of using the capture card is to capture all the micro-stutters and dropouts, as well as the menus, just as the pilot sees them. Since the video will ultimately be viewed on KZread, it will never be viewed perfectly lossless, since YT always re-encodes after upload. So the goal is to provide YT with a high-enough-quality source file that maximum possible quality is presented to the user. Although NVENC H.264 Lossless is not true lossless, I believe it accomplishes this goal. When I say, "lossless" in the intro, it's short-hand for ... that. A lot of technical details that don't affect the end result, and that most people don't care about. But it is technically correct to say "lossless," since that's the name of the rate control profile I've selected when recording.
Did you get that ebike for purposes like this😂 either way putting it to good use and as always awesome testing 🤙🏽

No matter how good the v2 is in tests for some things having two antenna will just always be better. I fly helis more than anything else and their frame is basically a vertical wall of carbon fiber. Having two antenna makes VTX mounting a lot more flexible and aircraft orientation to the vrx a lot less critical.
You're misreading the delay in the first graph @11:39 (comparing V2 700mw to 1200mw) - the first graph has huge latency compared to the second during the worst part of the route. I'd agree that, aside from the ability to go to 25 in the second graph, the bitrates are very comparable. Edit: you made a comment about how there's a lot of blue hidden behind the red at the bottom of the first graph, that's incorrect. A closer look will show that those are short blue lines of multiple dots. There are no blue dots hidden at the bottom (at a meaninful rate, at least, there may be a couple points down there)
@TheVexinator

Great comparison, BTW. Thank you!
16:25 You're not saying much about the latency though... What's interesting to me is the latency is supposedly better (i.e. according to the goggles) during that bad 1 Mbps part, even though the video looked much more unflyable...

It looks like the new one sacrifices latency for a higher bit rate when there is a poor connection .
I think you've got a faulty VTX. I've got a V1 VTX that behaves similarly and never gets to full 25mbs, and it's worse the higher the power I use.
Worried about the capture card's codec and affect on the footage. It's definitely the weak link and I doubt its "lossless".
@JoshuaBardwell

The capture card is simply passing the HDMI feed direclty to OBS. What comes out of the capture card is identical to what goes into it.
So the build of the v2 vtx is better but the hardware /software has still the same performance.
Thank you very much for performing these tests! BUT - it looks very much like you're using the stock WS antennas, that are proven beyond any doubt to be absolute garbage. Hence a lot of Walksnail pilots will never use them, but upgrade straight to True RC (or similar proven great performing antennas). Can you possibly repeat (some of) the tests with proper antennas? I fear the stock antennas are so bad they actually invalidate most of the data sets, rendering any real conclusion moot. I hate to sound like I'm dumping on your work, which is not my intention at all, as I really do appreciate your effort.
