Walks in Surrey: Exploring Reigate Castle and Grounds

Ойын-сауық

Today I am out exploring with Matthew Holdsworth of Reigate in Surrey. He is showing me some of the town's heritage, notably the first road tunnel, the charming town hall and the ruined castle and grounds.
King William I granted the land around Reigate to one of his supporters, William de Warenne, who was created Earl of Surrey in 1088. It is believed that his son, William de Warenne, 2nd Earl of Surrey, ordered that Reigate Castle be built, although the de Warennes had their southern base in Lewes, Sussex, as well as castles in Yorkshire and Normandy.

Boy. do I remember driving through that tunnel back in 1952/3 in my 1935 Singer 2 seat open sports car., The roar of the exhaust was deafening as you went through.on my way to Brighton. If you are that way try to get on the tour that takes you through. the Tunnels they are very interesting and the guide can fill you in on the grisly details as you go along , As a matter of interest, I understand that this castle-like Lewis has a double mot

I grew up a few miles from Reigate. Infinitely nicer than Redhill which had many dark and gothic type buildings until the mid 1980s when many were pulled down and they built The Harlequin Centre.

Very interesting vid! Chalked full of all kinds of facts! Always make me a bit sad when these places no longer exist though. I'd like to even see the ruins!!! I wonder if some of the folks that even live in Reigate are aware that there once used to be .castle there?🤔

The oldest tunnel in the world is the Furlo Pass in the Apennines, the Via Flaminia passes through a tunnel built in 76 - 77 AD during the time of Emperor Vespasian, replacing an earlier tunnel.Looking forward to your tree videos later

This is, again, great stuff...I know it probably sounds like bullshit, (it's not), but you do seem to have a kind of knack of seeking out interesting people and getting them to talk to camera...and even if some of what they say isn't quite right it still remains interesting... Thanks as ever Dave

Thank you Dave. I enjoy most of all having someone to walk with. It does make it more interesting and if a detail here and there isn't quite right, it doesn't matter. Overall it is about entertaining the audience and I do my best to achieve that.

Its great seeing these little gems which I imagine are off the traditional tourist routes as they are what I see out repeatedly when I make my pilgramage to the UK from Australia every so often. You may not appreciate what magic these gems exude for those who come find such contrast from their own countries. Beautiful colours, textures, history and architecture......and friendly people! Miss the place.
