WALKS IN DORSET at SHERBORNE (4K)

In this episode of my series “ Walks in Dorset”, I take a 6 mile circular walk starting & finishing in the historic town of Sherborne. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I start my walk with a look at the amazing Sherborne Abbey (Abbey Church of St Mary) as well as the Sherborne School, St John's Almshouses & the Conduit (located in the Market Place).
Leaving the town to the South, I cross the River Yeo and head out into the countryside, making my way to Sherborne Park.
The footpath through the park takes me by the “new” Sherborne Castle (I can just see part of the remains of the “old” Castle to the North of the lake) and through to a lodge in the East. Climbing up Jerusalem Hill, I pass by the remains of “The Camp” - previously a Nissan Hut Field Hospital from WW2 and now just brick foundations remain.
I make my way to the settlement of Haydon - passing by the redundant St Catherine's church - before heading South to the hamet of North Wootton (which also has the remains of a church ...just a tower).
Passing by Folke Golf Club I then head North West along Green Lane back to Sherborne.
NB: Sorry for the poor audio in the final scene. The microphone jack had not been pushed in fully so the sound is only coming out of one speaker!

Lovely walk Dave. I really want to visit the old Sherborne castle, having been to the newer one in the past couple of years. The parish church in the town is incredible. The first time I saw it, I couldn’t believe it wasn’t an abbey. Sherborne is a gorgeous place to visit.

Super useful video for me because I am hoping to visit and spend a few days in Sherbourne later in the year on my way to Totnes. I think Logan could sense the ghost of Sir Walter Raleigh when you stopped for a drink as he kept looking behind. Thanks for all the info and history. Very interesting.

Sherborne is beautiful, we are lucky enough to live here. We’ve still not visited the castles or the Abbey but it’s very high on our list of things to do. I envy you going to Totnes. We lived in Devon for 14 years and it was one of my favourite places to visit.

David. Some excellent walks you have covered. I wonder whether you have considered editing-in maps identifying waymarks. By that I mean places you have stopped to take in views or features, indicated on the relevant map.

Thank you. Yes, good idea. I do try and highlight points on the route where it might be tricky to spot, say, a footpath sign (they can often be well hidden!) but perhaps including a map on screen at the same time would indeed help - particularly as you say, for the views. Thanks for watching.

A great walk Dave, and not far from us so we'll definitely give it a go! We have walked up past the castle, but then went the other way, so were interested to see your route. We look forward to all your walks, but enjoy the Dorset ones in particular as they are the most accessible for us. Thank you for all the historical facts along the way too!

I was born and brought up in Hampshire, lived in Devon for 14 years and now live in Sherborne. Being retired is a bit like being on holiday a lot of the time, especially as we live in such a beautiful part of the country. However what I envy you most is going to Switzerland. I was lucky enough to go there in 1963 when I was just 11, it holds a very special place in my heart. One of my favourite places is the Lake District. I first went there in 1971 when I was at University but it’s very expensive and overcrowded these day. My other favourite place is the Scottish Highlands, it reminds me a little of Switzerland in places. But it’s a long way from Dorset!
