    Do you speak the local language? How long it take to learn it? Is it a difficult language? Do you need to speak the local language to live there?

    I understand and speak basic Lao. It’s a tonal language, and very different from English. After a year of immersion you can probably learn enough to get by, but I think it will take a lifetime to be totally proficient. You can get by in the major cities with English. It’s spoken less in the country side, but people are friendly and helpful, and you’ve always got google translate!
