Walking to Pike Place Market Via Seattle's "Most Dangerous" Areas In Belltown | Monthly Tour Nov '21

I used to live in that alley. I made the same walk many times, cold, hungry, needing to steal my next bottle of wine. I couldn't seem to pull myself up and out of homelessness and desperation in Seattle. I gave much thought and prayer to my situation. I realized I needed to get out of Seattle. The flight I wanted had me settling for a Greyhound. I live in a different part of the USA now, drive a paid-for new automobile, and am paying mortgage on my $300,000 home on a small acreage. I don't know exactly why I KZread searched Seattle. Probably I needed to see where I had been and openly thank God during Thanksgiving for his mercy and grace. And invite our prayers for our nation. God bless you.

When I lived in Seattle to attend the UW I worked at Maximilien near First and Pike. I missed my own country and working there helped with my homesickness. Sad to see the Macy's closed. Downtown was beautiful during the Christmas Holidays. I walked by myself everywhere without a problem but that was six years ago. More and more Seattle reminds me of San Francisco with the stark contrast between wealth and poverty. Macys sold for 580 million dollars and that was for the dirt it sits on. Billions of dollars in real estate with the homeless sleeping in doorways.

@@LaoOcean Also! I’ve only visited once and was able to see pike place but a lot of the stores were closed because it was later in the day. Maybe on one of your monthly market walks you could visit some of the lower spots and some of the lesser well known shops. I saw some really cool art galleries I’d love for you to show me and some novelty shops! Don’t worry about Starbucks anymore. Everyone knows about those spots. I feel like tourists and people watching these videos want to see local spots. True local spots. That’s what I’m looking for at least. And your videos have helped show me a lot of why I want to move there. But there’s still lots more of love to see. Oh also I’d love to see some park videos. Like green lake or volunteer park or somewhere I could take my dog too. Nice Alice In Chains name drop on your video btw lol. Anyway, looking forward to the next video! I remember going to Pike Place Market as a child to shop with my family There were five department stores downtown at that time. I found the street guys very helpful. I arrived in Seattle with mostly English pounds expecting to exchange to dollars at the Westlake Centre as I did before not knowing most of the stores had gone. Soon found I could not exchange my money anywhere unless I had an american bank account. They advised me on a bank on 4th Avenue which was near my hotel. But it turned out to be an ATM only. So with only $9 left I had to get the light rail to the Airport and changed my money there, at a lower exchange rate. Note to self, exchange to US dollars before travelling.

Hi Denis new subscriber here! ❤️ liked and subscribed! I live 40 miles south of Seattle, in Lakewood right next to Tacoma. Years ago we would go up to Seattle and go to the 5th Ave, the market, Seattle center, football and baseball games, but not so much anymore. We are older and quite frankly don’t feel as safe as we used to there. Doesn’t help listening to the news on how bad it is there some days. But I sure enjoyed your walking tour! I always say go early rather then later! You walked around at the perfect time! I will look at the rest of your videos now and catch up! Keep these coming!

I'm actually moving out of Seattle very soon, so excited about it. I used to LOVE Seattle, I actually go back 4 generations here. I've lived and worked in every corner of Seattle. But the last 2 years broke me.... it was unbearable to me. I'd visit other parts of the country, they were still living life, were happy, LIFE was happening. I'd come back to Seattle, and it was so cold, and I'm not talking about the weather. People were sad, scared, depressed, hibernating..... hiding behind masks and gloves and fear.... obsessed with covid. I don't know, at some point the city became as grey and dismal as the weather. I'm done with it, I'm moving somewhere vibrant and happy. Ready to go.

Hi. I am your new subscriber. Last November 28, 2021, I decided to check the new activities that the Pike Place Market are promoting. I became curious and decided to check for myself. I missed the photo with Santa by a mere minute. I was able to videotape the throwing of fish at the famous Pike Place Fish. About to have photos with the golden pig, partake some delicacies, enjoyed the flowers, listened to some carols singing. Then I was about to go home after listening to the guy playing the piano at the corner of the pike area. Then as I was walking, a guy tried to grab my bag and that was a scary moment there but my quick reflex prevented him from pulling my bag. I was able to deliver a quick, hard chop on his hand and he ran away. I was so nervous after that incident. A few days afterwards, I came upon your channel and you even titled it, dangerous areas. Anyways, just a reminder, please be alert , be careful and stay safe.❤️🙏

I was born at Swedish hospital in 1956 and grew up a block away from the current Virginia Mason hospital! Things have changed so much in terms of "Safety!" My Mom taught myself, a younger brother and sister how to use the Seattle Buses. We felt safe and comfortable to ride the buses to downtown on our own or even walk down the hill on Madison to the Main Public Library or even to downtown on our own. Today, I don't think I would let my own kids do that currently in the present, but it was a different time in the 1960's! Too bad things have changed such!

The escort service is for city employees to walk outside of city hall near City Hall Park which is closer to Pioneer Square on the south side of the Central Business District. The city officials were getting mugged as they went to work so they asked for security. The service is not for anyone to request it, actually, if it were it would be a two'fer for any mugger anyway.

LOL literally accidentally ended up on 3rd yesterday afternoon with my little boy. I knew I needed to bounce out of the area the second I saw an unhoused man pulling something out of his sock followed immediately by a guy nodding off against his tree. I was just like “ok, buddy, I think I actually forgot to grab something at that Target.” LOL… I looked it up later and was sort of surprised by how notorious it was. Honestly - first time in Seattle, absolutely in love with the city. I’ve lived in New Orleans and Baton Rouge though, so I always tell people I have a wildly divergent view of what a “crime problem” looks like. It is a beautiful city, everyone is so friendly… I had like 20,000 steps on both days this weekend and my son gladly did every single bit of it with me.

The reason 3rd is so awful is because it's public transit only and most people strictly avoid it. 3rd and Pike is by far the most dangerous. That new building on 3rd and Lenora, where you said to avoid, is going to be the most expensive condos (per ft^2) in all of Seattle. Hahaha Nobody that knows Seattle would ever buy there.

To me it’s safe no matter which street you take. Much of this is subjective. Easiest and safest would be to walk west to 1st Ave then TK head south to the market. Easy and pleasant walk.

One time this homeless person can running up to me who just got stabbed in the neck called 911 they were fine . Don't forget 5 point caffe ah good times :) it's so bad in that area cuz Mary's place is right there. And that other women's shelter also New Horizons homeless youth drop in center. Next time you get coffee I suggest Street Bean . Street Bean give homeless kids a job as a barista so next time you tip it'll be going to a good cause. Nice to see Fantasy LTD is still located on First Ave (at the 20 min. mark.) Back in the late 70's and 80's from all the way down First Ave. to Pioneer Square was filled with porn shops, peep shows, strip clubs, bars and tattoo parlors on both sides of the street. If you couldn't find what turned you on at First Ave. you probably should have moved to NYC or LA. It was a pretty wild scene for those who lived downtown at the time. First Ave. and Belltown are pretty tame compared to what it used to be, the only original strip club on First Ave. is the Lusty Lady which sits directly across the street from the conservative, Seattle Art Museum. Now that the downtown area has become gentrified, homogenized and boring, what used to be the real Seattle was demolished, deconstructed and over developed years ago.

YOur mileage may vary... I've lived here 5 years (Capitol Hill) and I love it. Love the weather (yes, even in the winter)... and it's beautiful and the people are friendly... even if people don't often follow up with plans. It's pretty safe... violent crime is much lower than other cities. Things like petty theft and car break-ins are pretty high, however. Like any city, it has its good and bad sides... but some of us love it here. Glad you found a better place for you, but not everyone considers Arizona an ideal place. The early morning walks are a bit misleading. See any police presence at all? That doesn't change much throughout the day. It's a ghost town all hours compared to before Seattle got woke. He should do these walks in the afternoon or evening. 1st-5th Avenue ,Georgetown,Sodo , Pioneer Square on Saturday at 7pm maybe. You will see campers, drug attics, trafficking lurking all over. 500 less police officers than 2 years ago. 1/3 less. I can appreciate the positive spin he's going for. The fact remains Seattle is realizing it's transformation to San Francisco. Get out between 6-10am before the drugs wear off and the bottom feeders wake up.
