Walking Through the World Non-Binary | Jesse Lueck | TEDxRanneySchool

The gender continuum, why gender is a complex and layered social construct. Jesse Lueck was hired at Prudential Financial just as she finished college and started her career as an associate in Fixed Income and Performance Reporting. She worked her way up to the management level and has transitioned into project management. Ms. Lueck is very active with diversity and inclusion and was appointed as a member of the Board of Directors for one of the business resource groups called Pride at Prudential. Because of her expertise, Ms. Lueck now speaks at other companies on the topics of inclusion in the workplace and the gender continuum. Ms. Lueck earned her B.S. in Mathematics from Seton Hall University and a Master of Science in Applied Statistics from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Ms. Lueck is an avid soccer player and in her spare time enjoys home renovation and spending time with her wife and dog. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

5:40 “I do not want to be a boy, but I want to be treated like one” perfectly sums up my feelings growing up. My mum used to ask me if I wanted to be a boy and this would’ve been the perfect reply if I had had the words...

Yep. I didn't always want that - I really wanted long hair, and I hated almost any team sport that involved a ball - but I hated dresses and thought dolls were boring (until I got old enough to realize that Barbies can be used as action figures!) I wanted more than anything to play hockey, and was one of the fastest, most agile skaters at our local ice rink, but no...girls were not allowed to do that. It was too dangerous. Nevermind that the girls' sport "equivalent" - broomball - was played running around on the ice in tennis shoes! No thanks. I don't think of myself as nonbinary, although I have to wonder if I might have at least entertained the notion, had I grown up a few decades later, but I am absolutely sympathetic. People should be allowed to be who they are.

Also even if people aren't trying to express a gender - some women just want to wear pants because they are comfortable. Remember Poke'mon taught us "shorts are comfy and easy to wear" and I think schools should be more flexible in what people wear.

Military brats learn to not stress over social things because they move so often, you have to get new friends every year or two or three. I was shy, so I had classmates and 1 friends in elementary school, 5 friends in 8th grade, classmates but not friends in high school, 1 husband for 6 years, 1 friend in my 30s who I saw for a year. I had roommates for 4 years, but none of them became close. I pretty much learned that lonliness was my life. I contrast that with your experience, very different. I wonder if you had been a military brat if you would not have tried to commit suicide, which is very sad. I'm glad you survived. It's funny how you can't see beyond the present when you're young. And also when you're old, unfortunately 🙄 I haven't had a friend in 35 years, except for my mom, who passed away. I socialize a lot at work, but only have 1 person's phone number. I don't have phone numbers of any friends, just a few relatives are left. Books were my friends.

In the Holy Bible God said let us make Man in our own image Male and Female. God is Light and there no darkness in Him. Jesus said I am the way and the Truth and the life no man comes to the Father but by me. It amounts to asking what genitals you have so yeah, it's pretty weird. Also it implies the asker wants to know which gender roles to pigeonhole you into. A friendlier way to ask about someone's gender would be just to ask their pronouns, and share yours if you feel comfortable doing that.

  • @DJMightyChip

Why do you need to know, sam? There's a lot of grey area in between. Do you want to know so that you know what pronouns to use? Non-binary people like myself do not identify with male or female pronouns... I prefer they/them, as many non-binary people do. Perhaps a better question would be, "which pronouns do you prefer?" Or... more polite still, "How should I refer to you after you leave?" Those would be a better way to ask if you're just concerned that you refer to them in the right context.

@A M. Ok, so, I am non-binary and I have seen so many people actually do this and I honestly couldn't disagree with it more. Not all people in a group think the same. Women can be masculine and still be women and men can be feminine and still be men, it's not about what interests they have but about their sense of self. If a person who is assigned female at birth feels that they are non binary, then that's what they are even if they decide to wear more feminine or more masculine clothing and the same goes for any other trans person. Just wanted to clarify that.

Well presented; however, this is one I simply do not understand; gender-neutral/X/non-binary is self-proclamation and not a physical condition. I am all for people identifying themselves as whatever pronoun to which they feel aligned; however, people are in fact either male or female.

Tom W it doesn’t have to be a physical condition for it to be a thing. For example, people with autism are in fact autistic. Just because you can’t tell that by looking at their body, doesn’t mean it’s not a part of them. What goes on in your head is the true indicator of who you are, and your physical appearance is (at best) a mere reflection of that.

  • @marshmallowcat1889

Tom W identifying with a gender different from the one given to you at birth is how we try to make this reflection match who we are inside. People can’t simply be male or female, every individual person is a complex being who is unable to be an exact copy of someone else.
