Walking Through Fire

Host Marcia Alvar speaks with Nawal El Saadawi, Egyptian novelist, playwright and scholar. Ms. Saadawi talks about her trials and her fight for equality for women in the Arab World. She discusses her childhood and her break with tradition to attend college and become a doctor. Also discussed is her role as Egypt's Ministry of Health Director and her eventual downfall from this position because she spoke out against policies of Anwar Sadat. Most of all, she stresses her desire to make the world aware of the oppression of women, especially those in Egypt (from which she is exiled).

What a delightful conversation, an interviewer in clothes that seem to stem from the 60's! And that plant, the whole decor, uggh! Not that it matters much, for I enjoy the views of Dr. Nawal El-Saadawi and her presence. These views of her are so close to mine! And what an excellent description of the Egypt culture and how art and politics, like body and spirit, are connected. The Western mind, with an emphasis on the left brain, exists in a realm of fragmentation. Thank you for this video, much appreciated

This interview is an example of American claiming superiority and white women feminism imperialism. Dr. El Saadawi had to reeducate, remind Americans about their sexism, racism, classism and the historical past and present lack of education for all Americans.
