Walking the Rail Trail between Goathland and Grosmont
Join me on a stunning walk along the Rail Trail, a popular route that takes you through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the North York Moors National Park. In this video, I explore the section of the trail that runs between the picturesque village of Goathland and the historic town of Grosmont, both of which are stops on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
Starting in Goathland, made famous as the filming location for Hogsmeade in the Harry Potter movies, I follow the Rail Trail as it winds its way through beautiful woodland and open moorland, offering stunning views of the North York Moors at every turn. We'll see old railway bridges and the beautiful Beck Hole village before arriving in the historic town of Grosmont.
As we walk, we'll learn about the history of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and the role it has played in the region's transportation and tourism for over a century. We'll also discover the unique geology that has shaped the landscapes we see today.
This video is perfect for those who love walking, nature, and history. Whether you're planning a visit to the North York Moors or simply want to experience the beauty of the area from home, this video will take you on a journey through some of England's most beautiful countryside. Another enjoyable outing with you - thank you very much
We have walked this route lots of times, but we never get tired of it. Such a beautiful place. Can't wait to return.
I used to stay in a B&B in Goathland just opposite the station, next to the road bridge... until it changed hands and became a railway-themed B&B, just before Heartbeat started to become popular bringing in the crowds of tourists. Then moved to staying in Pickering thereafter...
Andrew I just love watching your vlogs they are so natural & informative & relaxed encouraging me to discover your wonderful land 👍Tip Top Andrew don't stop your excellent work 👏

I love Goathland and Grosmont, they are stunning villages
I grew up in that neck of the woods and recall the early days of the NYMR. The walk up from Grosmont to Goathland was a regular treat as a child, and when I was (almost) old enough, my father bought me my first pint in that pub in Beck Hole. The two doors, on one side the pub, on the other the village shop, the counter running from the shop side into the pub side. My father was a bit of a history buff so I was well versed in the history of the railway and the local industry it served. Never quite the same after Heartbeat spoilt Goathland, the then village shop opposite the garage, doing a cracking line in ice cream, but that and Harry Potter bring in much needed funds to both the railway and the local shops. Fond childhood memories of that line and that area.
Excellent work on one of the best attractions in this area - thanks for posting .

Very enjoyable video. I just love the area and always enjoy visiting the steam railway.
Loved this! I’ll be doing this walk when I’m in Goathland for the Heartbeat Vehicle Rally!
That was fascinating. Looks like a nice day out... Also.. That drone work is just cherry on top. Nice.
Another good video, great scenes and very informative. Personally enjoy visiting these areas as often as I can. Thanks for posting and can’t wait for the next one

Another great video. Love Goathland and the NYMR but I have never walked the rail trail. Would have loved to hear your class 37 return train working hard up the hill into Goathland.

Eeee, that were grand, lad! Not taking the piss, Andrew, but you pull at my heartstrings... I'm an Oz, born and raised but I share your heritage and physically we could be cousins! Splendid footage and editing, as ever. My wife and I can't wait to copy this walk. May Beeching turn in his grave. 😘
Lovely seeing the trail winding along through woods and the narrow wooden bridges over the beck, so delightfully tranquil. The sight of the steam train as it made its stately progress down the line, just so purely English and the whole video a joy to watch. Thanks for your filming and the interesting narration.
The Birch Hall Inn with the sweet shop between the two bars - as you say, best pub in the world.

Thanks Andrew. Haha Yes! I was more disappointed that it didn't match what I'd said in the morning about getting a steam train back to be honest. I quite like the Class 37's.
Another interesting and very well made production.
Never been on this railway & that looks a nice walk, despite no steam the interior of the carriage was lush. 🥰
Great as usual, brought back so many memories.
It's a good walk from Goathland to Grosmont. I've done it a couple of times, in pre-Heartbeat days when it was possible to park in Goathland without having to pay for the privilege. Interesting to see the remnants of the original railway route.

Great Video and thanks for sharing it. Me and my wife often visit and stay in Goathland staying at Glendale house B&B. We have walked the Rail Trail as you did and got the train back. We love that area and thank you for explaining the history of it too. I knew a bit about it but your detailed dialogue makes it that bit better. I will be watching your other videos with interest. I recommend the Pullman Diner on the NYMR as a great experience too.

Loved this walk. Brings back so many memories ( as do a lot of your walks) and so good to watch on this snowy Sunday afternoon. Looking forward to your next and thank you. 👏👏
This brings back many memories of a few days I spent in the area with my campervan in 2003. I walked the rail trail too! BTW the class 37 diesel locomotive that hauled your train is regarded as a "classic" by rail enthusiasts since it's 50+ years old so not much younger than the 1950s built steam locomotives used on the NYMR.
Delightful and most useful as I have been planning to do this walk during the steam gala later this month. Thanks. 👍
Another excellent video reminding me of my visit there in August this year. 🚂🚃🚃🚃

Really enjoy your videos Andrew, I used to visit Whitby so much in the 1980's and 1990's and as I now live in Canada I love the reminders of the many locations I used to take my kids while we used to stay in the area. Very happy days that I miss so much so thank you and please keep up the good work in reminding me of all my 'happy places'.

Absolutely brilliant! Done a really good job of that. 👌👌
Goathland Station. Went there one afternoon a few years after Harry Potter had filmed there. A steam train was about to depart so people had congregated on the bridge to take pictures, the penny hadn't dropped that steam locomotives through out an awful when they set off. Made chuckle when they walked past spluttering away.
Another great video. Visited Goathland for the first time in September and looking forward to Grosmont as soon as it is warm enough to camp again. Glad that I don't have to travel miles to get to these lovely places.
A great video. We love this walk and have done it several times.

Thank you Sir very Nice Andrew
Excellent stuff, thank you!
Loved this video! My wife and I spent a week recently, in the Esk Valley cottages. I remember you taking the drone video, as I watched from the front garden!! Best holiday we've had for a while. We left our white 4x4 in the car park, (it's visible in the video) and walked everywhere or went on the train! We did the same walk as you, but in reverse!! I can appreciate why Stephenson built the incline! Great videos, keep them coming.👍

It looks like you got a nice day. It is surprising just how much industrial activity their was on the Moors and NE coast, Alum was a big industry in Sandsend I cant remember the location right now but one of the coastal village’s has cart tracks carved into the bedrock on the seashore they loaded ships with cargo when the tide was out and sailed off when it came back in. (Possibly Runswick bay)

I remember going to Grosmont engine sheds in the early 80’s, back then it was quite tatty and we were lucky if we saw a small tank engine working. And back then all the coaches were scruffy, mismatched colours etc. But now it is awesome, the loco’s are breeding, everything works and is immaculate, and they sometimes have more trains in operation than Northern Rail! Earlier this year Grosmont MPD was used as a filming location for Indy 5, and the 9F was dressed up as a WW2 Nazi loco. Also the new Mission Impossible movie has been filming there.
Goathland has one the very few volunteer fire brigades. Beck Hole Ironworks were unlucky in having one of its blast furnaces crack open. Esk Valley village didn't get an all weather road up until the 1960s.
Hi Andrew I have followed your videos for about 6 months and I must say they are great keep them coming. We are in New Zealand and looking forward to coming to the UK when the boarders open again Cheers Steve.

@NorthYorkshireWanderer

Thanks Matt! Always important to get a pint in! 🍻
First train from Pickering and last train to Pickering are usually always diesel as there are less loco servicing facilities so it’s easier to store the loco overnight.
Great video and very informative too x
Amazing!!!
This is also my favourite rail trail. Disappointingly, when I visited in June 2023 they wouldn't sell me a single ticket from Grosmont to Goathland. They even admitted this was 'a popular thing' to get the train out and walk back. I'm visiting again tomorrow for the September annual steam gala - I'll check to see if they've reconsidered and post an update here either way...

Excellent video there Andrew I’m planning a trip to the moors in May and have always wanted to walk the root and thanks to you it as helped me with my research into the trip. You shouldn’t be disheartened about not having a steam train at the end I’d give anything to have a class 37 haul my train
