⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Walking NYC (Narrated) : Diamond District on 47th Street, Manhattan (November 11, 2019)
Google Maps Route: goo.gl/maps/jSwnzvij2y9a7EjLA
A walk on the Diamond District in Midtown Manhattan.
From Wikipedia:
"The Diamond District is between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. The district was created when dealers moved north from an earlier district near Canal Street and the Bowery that was created in the 1920s, and from a second district located in the Financial District, near the intersection of Fulton and Nassau Streets, which started in 1931, and also at Maiden Lane, which had existed since the 18th century. A notable, long-time anomaly of the district was the famous Gotham Book Mart, a bookstore, which was located at 41 West 47th Street from 1946 to 2004.
The move uptown started in 1941. The district grew in importance when Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands and Belgium, forcing thousands of Orthodox Jews in the diamond business to flee Amsterdam and Antwerp and settle in New York City. Most of them remained after World War II, and remain a dominant influence in the Diamond District. Another factor in the northward move was the co-location of finance and insurance companies who moved into the downtown districts, causing rents to drastically increase. By 1941, the Diamond Dealers Club-an exclusive club that acts as a de facto diamond exchange and has its own synagogue-officially made the move up to midtown as well.
The area is one of the primary centers of the global diamond industry, as well as the premier center for jewelry shopping in the city. It is one of the largest diamond and jewelry districts in the United States, along with Jewelers' Row, Philadelphia and Los Angeles's Jewelry District, and it is the second oldest surviving jewelry district in the United States after Jewelers' Row in Philadelphia. Total receipts for the value of a single day's trade on the block average $400 million. An estimated 90% of diamonds in the United States enter through New York. There are 2,600 independent businesses located in the district, nearly all of them dealing in diamonds or jewelry. Most are located in booths at one of the 25 "exchanges" in the district, and in a public corridor to 46th Street. Commission based hawkers are also a common sight and they usually solicit business for stores located on the street level.
Many deals are finalized by a simple, traditional blessing (mazel und brucha, which means "luck and blessing") and handshake. Retailers with shops line the streets outside. At 50 West 47th Street is the Gemological Institute of America which trains gem dealers. One distinguishing figure of the district is the diamond-motif street lights illuminating the corners. The NYC Diamond District also holds three prominent trade interconnected buildings: the 580 Fifth Avenue Exchange, the DDC, Diamond Dealers Club, and the International Gem Tower. It is also steps from other landmarks such as Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall."

Googled it after watching Uncut Gems lol
The diamond district is one of the most interesting blocks in Manhattan. Bought from there many times. You're just getting into the intricate workings of this industry. Thanks for filming.
Thank you for video guiding on this street.
Thanks for the little tour.
Thank you!!
Walk brah is back!
2:49 very nice 🙂
Nice work
very sparkly.
I love this
Best street for Ladies shopping day. Great video
Paramus also has a very large jewelry district. That's where I got my wife's diamond. Maybe I should have checked out 47th Street but I think it's probably the same when you are looking for a 1.75ct SI1 stone. The bigger gems are probably found exclusively on 47th Street.
I've shopped at DIAMOND CENTER (across the street at end of video) twice, once for an Xmas present and went back an got a really nice 14K Figaro this past November.
BROTHER. I've watched a lot of your videos. And, I can honestly say there seemed to have been some TENSION there. Some people don't understand what your doing which is, showing people what New York City has to offer. All I can say is your doing a great job and to be safe.

Yeah, hi Ken, your live from Taiwan is in 17 minutes and you just put that vid on 👍🚶♂️🗽🏆
well done
Great 👍
Artificially scarcity creating an inflated market, only certain colors, clarity, or carat diamonds are actually of any real value. You can go to different dealers that do appraisals and they can vary quite a bit. Places like Costco, pawn shops, or even online retailers typically offer better value in jewelry.
Picking gold from dust is very common in India... I'm amazed it happens in New York too..
I imagine the storefront windows are VERY thick & smash-proof
Some of the contiguous display windows appear to be identical, so I wonder if they're parts of a single breach-proof unit.

It's all the same company with different names on each door according to one documentary about this topic.
Weird watching this before all this happened 😳
1:47 hatzalah!!!
Ah.. engagement rings. The world's smallest handcuffs.
Sir,, your videos are very good, Thankyou,. I learned that the new version of GOOGLE EARTH allows YOU to create FRIENDLY WALK-THROUGHS around interesting parts of the world....... ....................but the small problem is that it does not have an AUDIO NARRATION feature so you can TALK about the TOUR to your GOOGLE EARTH viewers............. I bet NY is cold.............London UK is pretty vold today ...........8 deg C Thanks Vince

You’re welcome!
I swear I must have seen this area in some heist in a movie
💝💝
Browsing through the comments section, and I'm sorely disappointed there has been not one reference made to the famous Diamond District scene from the 1976 classic Marathon Man in the three years since this walk was posted. Is everyone here too young to have seen it? If so, you are missing out on a great piece of 1970s cinema filmed almost entirely in New York...."I know that man. It can't be... Szell? Szell. Szell! Szell! Szell! My God! Stop him! Szell! Stop Szell! It's Szell. Der Weisse Engel! Der Weisse Engel is here. Oh my God, stop him. Stop him."
I'm here now buying a chain
I can't imagine how many millions of dollars in jewelry you walked by in just a few minutes!
I have some that want to sell
TraxNYC
Over the past .... oh say about 25 yrs ..... I'VE FOUND DIAMOND JEWELRY like 3 times, the most recent was about 2 weeks now, a small Baquet cut and white gold earring, like 98/ 99 I found a womans Tennis bracelet ( gave it to my sister who jumped up and down like she just won the Grand Showcase for The PRICE IS RIGHT .... she turns around a few months later and PAWNED IT 👊🤬🤬🤬🤬) then after that I found a Solitaire earring and gave it to this NO GOOD CHICK ( live and learn ,right).
I prefer without talking, sorry :/
newyork is always so vibrant! and i see lots of jewish people here! very interesting..

A respected Jewelry Exchange like Woodbridge NJ offers better prices for GIA-certified diamonds. Most NYC Diamond District jewelers or Philly can't beat the price for matching quality in the 4Cs.

Interesting he mentions that the diamond district is closed on Saturdays due to Jewish faith. When you think of diamonds you think of conflict diamonds (Africa), and at the same time Jews had something to do with the slave trade. Interesting when you think about it.
47th street and mao revolution and backwards is 74 or the end of the nam war and mao's neighbor in the same frame of mind. diamonds are forever... political commentary on 47th street... sandler lot play ball....
Real protesting looters would have hit this area thats how you know it was bogus up here
