⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Walking New Orleans (Narrated) : French Quarter at Sunrise (Bourbon Street, Frenchmen Street)

Google Maps Route: goo.gl/maps/gQbyQLrU2XnCPCFx7
An early morning walk in New Orleans through the French Quarter via Bourbon Street & Esplanade Avenue, ending at Frenchmen Street in the neighborhood of Marigny. This was by far one of the scariest walks I've ever done, walking past needles, broken glass, scary characters, and rats.
From Wikipedia:
"The French Quarter, also known as the Vieux Carré, is the oldest neighborhood in the city of New Orleans. After New Orleans (La Nouvelle-Orléans in French) was founded in 1718 by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, the city developed around the Vieux Carré ("Old Square" in English), a central square. The district is more commonly called the French Quarter today, or simply "The Quarter," related to changes in the city with American immigration after the Louisiana Purchase. Most of the extant historic buildings were constructed either in the late 18th century, during the city's period of Spanish rule, or were built during the first half of the 19th century, after U.S. annexation and statehood.
The district as a whole has been designated as a National Historic Landmark, with numerous contributing buildings that are separately deemed significant. It is a prime tourist destination in the city, as well as attracting local residents. Because of its distance from areas where the levee was breached during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 as well as the strength and height of the nearest Mississippi River Levees in contrast to other levees along the canals and lakefront, it suffered relatively light damage from floodwater as compared to other areas of the city and the greater region."

    Alex Moyers I agree. I’ve never been to New Orleans but I spend a lot of time in Paris. You get much more homeless people yelling shit at you there when you go out at night, as compared to this video. This seemed pretty chill to me, this guy makes it sounds like he’s walking through a warzone.

    Omg. If you’re still down there, please be careful. You have to stay in crowded areas because the criminals are always lurking. On the walk down Bourbon to get to Frenchmen, there are multiple signs that say, “stay in large groups”. Even if you see 4 or 5 people on a stretch, don’t trust because a lot of times, they’re together. Also, if you’re with one or two people, don’t think you’re safe, because sometimes they have larger groups and they always have guns. When a guy ran up on my dad, I believe it was in the morning.

    See John Vlog I’m from Baton Rouge, but my dad lived in the Marigny growing up so I spent summers, holidays, and half my weekends there. I’m down there all the time and am actually about to move back. I’m an adult now, but still stay out very late sometimes, so being wreckless, I’ve experienced these same scary walks and harassment and people scoping you out. If you walk straight down Bourbon on the way to Frenchmen, there are plenty of signs posted up on houses and buildings that say “stay in large groups” and something else about safety. They are about the size of those signs that you see in parking areas that say take/lock/hide your valuables. They were still up less than a year ago. When you’re out there with a crowd, having a good time, you don’t notice. But at midnight/early am when you just had an incident, it feels as if it has flashing neon lights and you’re like, “OMG, they tried to warn us”. Look for them next time. When you’re walking down Bourbon or the residential part of the quarter at odd hours, it’s usually pretty desolate and you will experience exactly what he did, but worse. I think him filming helped him out. I absolutely love New Orleans, but I wouldn’t let my loved ones go on some of these oddly timed walks. My dad used to do these type of things, but that’s why he’s gotten robbed a couple times. One time was early in the morning on Gravier while on the way to work. This early am walk reminded me of that.

Yes it is a dangerous place but always be aware and don't make yourself look scared or timid, carry yourself with confidence, most people don't want to mess with anyone who could be a match for them. Of course there are some places I just would not go like the riverwalk for one. Idk I'm not scared of much so him continually mentioning the "scary"encounter made me chuckle😂😂 **Edit** Frenchman st smells just as bad as bourbon with the cleaning solutions and grunge😂 Also nola is very pet friendly. I’m planning to go there solo in November, also a photographer and a New Orleans afficianado regarding the history, food and music. But one needs to be very aware in this notoriously dangerous albeit fascinating city and be extremely careful if going off the beaten path in quiet areas. And Bourbon Street and drunk frat kids certainly does not define New Oreans. So many layers of history in this place. Peace!

    Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop is even older, it dates to the 1770s as a Creole cottage but may have started building in the 1720s. It's been a bar for some time.....Sales tax is high, but as a tourism-driven economy it offsets some of the burden from locals. Up in Lake Providence, the tax is 11.45% which is one of the top rates in the US.

    @@ActionKid Have you found anything lessens the incidence of overheating? What do you do when it overheats? Do you have to wait a certain amount of time before you start filming again? Do you switch batteries? Are you considering getting the gopro8 in the hopes they have fixed the overheating problem? I'm asking because I'm considering getting either the gopro5 (because I can use reelSteady with it) or gopro7 or the gopro8. Also, why do you use a gimbal when gopro7 has built in stabilization? Couldn't you just use a selfie stick instead, as that would be lighter.

  • @ActionKid

    @ActionKid

    kevin2318 The overheating issue is a big problem, especially when the outside temperature is warm. I carry two cameras with me. If a camera overheats I pull out the battery, place it to the side and then start recording with the other camera. You can also record for shorter durations to prevent it from overheating. You have to be careful though, one of my battery pull tabs broke when my camera overheated and I believe the extreme heat melted the glove that held the tab to the battery. I had to use a knife to get the battery out of the camera. I’m definitely getting a GoPro HERO8, let’s hope the new camera has better thermals. I could use a selfie stick for my GoPro HERO7 Black but using a gimbal makes the footage just that much better.

    Speaking of getting robbed in New Orleans. In 1999 I went to New Orleans to meet up with a friend. We spent a week there. She had to leave to go back home a few days before I did, so I spent two extra days there by myself. On the last day I was walking back to my hotel and two guys robbed me. One definitely had a knife and the other acted like he had a gun (he may have had one, but I didn't actually see it) They got my wallet that had about $200 in it.

    4:32 Ecosia and Wikipedia inform me that Ignatius Jacques Reilly is the central character of John Kennedy Toole's pulitzer prize winning novel A Confederacy of Dunces which is a picaresque novel published in 1980, eleven years after Toole's suicide. Ignatius Jacques Reilly is something of a modern Don Quixote-eccentric, idealistic, and creative, sometimes to the point of delusion. In his foreword to the book, Walker Percy describes Ignatius as a "slob extraordinary, a mad Oliver Hardy, a fat Don Quixote, a perverse Thomas Aquinas rolled into one". He disdains modernity, particularly pop culture. The disdain becomes his obsession.

    I was walking with a friend on Bourbon Street at night. I've never seen so many drunk folks in all my life. We were on our way back to the hotel and caught sight of two kids about 11 or 12 years old who thought they'd try and mug two New York women. We scared the crap out of them and they hauled out of there. I was nervous with you walking around at night there. Please be safe, ActionKid. Your KZread family cares about you!

    You did so much good historical research but it alas your pronunciation of famous landmarks lets you down. It's a shame.

    How can you be afraid of rats and be from NYC 😂😂😂Stick to KZread buddy 😂 Sunrise come the street cleaners.😧😧😧😧 Sundown to sunrise is not for the puritanical . You will smell weed. You will smell vomit. You will smell alcohol. Seems to me you're not cut out for the french quarter. Stick with the guided tours .
