Walking in Suzhou's Old Alleys, Eastern China's Old Residential Areas | 4K HDR

Suzhou is a street photographer’s daydream.
Old streets, narrow alleys and a network of canals.
The houses remind me of Beijing hutongs.
If you enter through the front door, you will find yourself in a narrower alley that zigzags around many small houses.
Kind of like a commune.
Most of the people living here are old Suzhounese people or migrants that only want a small space and a cheap rent.
It is amazing how quiet these alleys are. They are right in the city center, but you turn a corner from a busy street, enter one of them and it is like if you travelled back in time, or to a very remote village.
There was almost no people, only a few grandmas chatting and a couple of children playing. One of the alleys was completely empty. It was so quiet!
There are a lot of old wells in that area and people still use their water to wash clothes and vegetables.
I wouldn’t mind living in one of those alleys! Although the rooms in the ground floor must be pretty dark.
In contrast to cities like Shanghai, Suzhou enjoys a landscape of fairly low-rise buildings, green leafy parks and a canal system that winds its way through the city.
The city itself and outlying area has about 10 million people and is a bustling metropolis that is the best of new and old China.
Suzhou boasts buildings over 2,000 years old while modern cutting-edge skyscrapers glimmer in the distance.
The beauty of Suzhou can be found in its abundance of classical Chinese gardens, which have been added collectively as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Just a short travel by bullet train from Shanghai, and easy access to numerous waterside cities, Suzhou is an amazing place to live.
Here is the top 10 Suzhou food you should try:
Pan-Fried Bun.
Sweet and Sour Mandarin Fish.
Taihu Lake Three Whites.
Noodles with Red Soup.
Gorgon Fruit with Sweet Osmanthus.
Cherry-shaped Pork.
Fermented Rice Wine Cake.
Quick-fried Shrimps with Biluochun Tea.
Suzhou is a beautiful and historic city. It is located in the south-east of Jiangsu Province. On the map it can be found half way between Beijing and Hong Kong and nowhere near Singapore, but very close to Shanghai. SIP’s train station has a high-speed train to the center of Shanghai, taking just 25 minutes to reach the city.
Shanghai boasts tennis tournaments, grand prix, top flight soccer, museums, art galleries, theatres, musicals, and world class dining.
The weather in Suzhou is mild with four distinct seasons.
The temperature peaks in July.
Spring and Autumn are very pleasant. Winter is not too cold, and with breaks for Christmas and Chinese New Year, there is always the chance to retreat to warmer climates.
There are shopping malls with international chains such as Sam’s Club, Walmart, Auchuan, and IKEA. Every type of restaurant can be found from Australian and US steak houses to Greek cuisine, charming Italian bistros and Mexican fare.
Of course, all different types of Chinese are available to try from traditional Suzhou fish to spicy Szechuan to Cantonese. And if eating out isn’t your thing, restaurant delivery is commonly used and available for most restaurants.
We are lucky to have several expat grocery delivery services available making it is possible to get international groceries delivered without ever having to go to a store.
There is always something to do on the weekends and at night. Suzhou is full of arts, culture, parks and recreational outlets.
Residential areas are regularly punctuated by parks and gardens. The Suzhou Arboretum is about 10 minutes on bike from the school. The Cultural Arts Centre boasts performances from Austrian choirs, German orchestras, English drama companies and all kinds of local talent. The Suzhou Sports Complex hosts all types of major sporting events.
Suzhou has lured many Fortune 500 companies and is a recreational spot for locals and expats.
It has a shopping and entertainment district named Times Square, a London Eye-like Ferris wheel, multiple Western and Asian restaurants, bars, theaters, and a concert hall, plus colorful musical fountains on Jinji Lake at night-and it’s all just a 20-minute subway ride from the heart of Old Town.

The green moss at the foot of the building near a puddle, the soot-smudged white walls, the high doors that hide secrets that have been folded and unfolded a hundred times, the grey granite slab that will suddenly jut out from underneath your foot, the faded red window frames, and the even smaller alleyways that will turn darker the deeper you go. These are the memories of my childhood. Thank you for bringing them back to me.

WOOHOO! BACK! WOW LOL, i watched this video way more early today and can only post now :P, when i watched it, they were no text on it (like, at all)... did you added it later on ? or posted another video or something ? O_o i swear when i watched it, they were no text. Or maybe i m just crazy XD Damn, what a shock everytime between old and new style :O... I was surprised, i honestly expected to see a wall somewhere around the houses and some grey bricks ha ha ha XD Even for small streest and old neighboars, it's still very clean. Something China can be proud imho. It's always very clean. It must be soo terrible to live there, it's like living in a maze... :O... i hope when you go live there , they give you a small map because you can be lost pretty easily. At least, i would be lost easily XD WOW some people actually hang their clothes and sheets and all on electric wires... :O crazy! I guess theses people will never get their clothes back if it suddently rain mid day :O I really like how many people actually made their own little garden with flowers and bonzais... i guess many chinese people love to take care of a small garden or flowers during free time :D 47:36 :O... She/He look exactly like my lovely cat.. may he rest in peace :(. He is exact same color and didn't care about anything while laying on a comfy place. That's crazy... When you are in old style places, you can see that streets are small and all building together and all. It's like they tried to save a maximum of space. And when you go to the new modern place, it's the complete contrary, everything is make extremly spacious and all. What a difference XD. 1:08:53 far away, there is a very tall building :O.. it look really massive from that distance :O. Hope you can visit it and maybe go on the top for a "nausea" view (for me) XD. It seriously look crazy tall compared to all the others around :O Wow, it feel good to be back and watch video again :D. Always amazing to visit China, even in the smallest, lost, unknown places ever, there is a secret waiting. Keep up digging them all :D. Such amazing collection of videos already, it's crazy, Thanks alots ! :D

Hey, Frank, there's a CC button on the video and you can always turn on or turn off the subtitles by hitting the CC button. I guess sometimes you didn't light on the CC button, so it's normal that you can't see the subtitles. ---------------------- I was shocked by the comparison of old and new too, Frank. Yes, you lived in a maze, but if you take a walk in the maze for 100 times, it's not a maze again. And you could be easily to find your home even with eyes closed...XD For me, it's always great pleasure to walk around randomly. You never know what scenes you would meet. Exploring alleys is a big fun for me. ------------ WOW some people actually hang their clothes and sheets and all on electric wires... :O crazy! I guess theses people will never get their clothes back if it suddently rain mid day :O The laundry is one of the coolest thing in this kind of alleys. You can see every kind of smart hanging styles...XD People are so creative to hang their clothes... ---------------- 47:36 :O... She/He look exactly like my lovely cat.. may he rest in peace :(. He is exact same color and didn't care about anything while laying on a comfy place. This orange little tiger is so cute and I didn't want to bother his sleeping :) -------------- That's crazy... When you are in old style places, you can see that streets are small and all building together and all. It's like they tried to save a maximum of space. And when you go to the new modern place, it's the complete contrary, everything is make extremly spacious and all. What a difference XD. Suzhou is a very special city to divide into an obvious old area and new area. In old areas, no new buildings were allowed to be higher than 24 meters. They want to to save the old style forever. In new downtown area, they invite experts from Singapore to build the new district. Crazy and smart city! -------------- 1:08:53 far away, there is a very tall building :O.. it look really massive from that distance :O. Hope you can visit it and maybe go on the top for a "nausea" view (for me) XD. It seriously look crazy tall compared to all the others around :O That building is the tallest one in Suzhou and it's now allowed to enter except business issues. What a pity... It's not like Shenzhen to make the top floor to be a tourism hot site.. ---------------- Thanks for your creative words all the time. You have the best imagination in my audiences. Have a wonderful day, Frank.
