In 1985, he was in Memphis and stopped in, at the Hollywood Cafe. He met Muriel Wilkins, a Arkansas school teacher, who played piano, at the Hollywood. It's said that they sang several spiritual songs, that night, including "Amazing Grace".

This song is so powerful. So full of examples of how an experience can change our lives. If you know the story of how Marc Cohn wrote this song, you know that he was going thru a terrible time in his life. In the song he describes the meeting with Murelle at the Hollywood Cafe, as a life changing experience. How she ignited a spark within him that changed his life, and his love of music. One line in the song, I feel, completely sums up his feelings at the time. "Touched down in the land of the Delta blues, in the middle of the pouring rain". He's been invited to this place. The heart and soul of real music. He arrives with hope but is still carrying the storm of despair (pouring rain), when this beautiful soulful woman touches his life, which puts him on an incredible life revival. We never know how much a simple act of love, might change a person's life.

I read on a Marc Cohn interview that he questioned writing about Elvis in the song only being that people would associate the song as an Elvis tribute. And it’s crazy that Elvis still holds that much power, that when people think of Memphis they think Elvis. When you had the father of the blues W.C handy, one of the most influential song writers in America of his time, also in Memphis.

FYI, the "Reverend Green" he refers to in the lyrics is Al Green, a hugely popular soul/R&B singer from the early '70s who later became a minister in a church in Memphis. Some of his big hits include "Let's Stay Together" "Take Me to the River" and "I'm Still in Love With You." Check him out if you get a free moment. Hearing him might add even more meaning to the lyrics Marc Cohn wrote. Nice reaction.
