I visited Harderwijk every year with my Family as a child. Only good memories and lots of nostalgia for a time that will never come back.

It not the sea that’s why it’s so calm :) it’s a huge lake that used to be the sea which is why it has beaches, if you want to know more Google Flevoland :)

@@ErickDoe Hi Erick, Thank you so much for offering to help. 😊 I would love to know if you feel Harderwijk is "gezellig"? Which neighbourhoods are best to live in (for families)? Which neighbourhood is NOT great to live in? Do you feel Harderwijk is a safe place (late at night on the streets - and also just in general)? Is it a good place to live with children? Is it very christian/religious? Are shops open on Sundays? What do you like most about Harderwijk? What do you like least? If there is one thing you could change about Harderwijk, what would it be? Lots of questions. Hope I didn't overwhelm you? 😊 😊

@@Shopgirl2000 Since you took the time to write out your questions, and I like your enthusiasm for my hometown, I’ve taken the effort to try and go through them all: :) Harderwijk is not too small, nor too big. It has plenty services (incl. hospital) because it acts as a regional centre for small surrounding villages. But doesn’t feel like a crowded city either. It is fairly rural, and away from the troubles of the “Randstad”. Best of both worlds, in my opinion. I find it pretty “gezellig”, as it has a medieval town centre with plenty of restaurants, cafés and shops. And a boulevard along the waterfront, also with hotels and bars with terraces to sit. People are overall quite friendly, and will often greet you in the street, even if you’re a stranger. Harderwijk has several neighbourhoods. There’s the old town with its shops and services, and mainly historic homes, from larger merchant houses to tiny fisherman’s homes. There’s a new “waterfront” area, with mid to upper market homes, it is mainly a residential area in the style of the old town. It is the newest neighbourhood and close to the city centre and kids friendly, as far as I know. Along the water is the “Stadsweiden”, a very green cul-de-sac neighbourhood with mainly 70’s and 80’s homes, with its own small shopping centre (baker, butcher, small supermarket, ATM, snack bar, apothecary, barber) and about 5 to 20 minutes walk to the city centre. It is family friendly and it has several primary schools, including a protestant and catholic one. In a lot of the cul-de-sac like squares pedestrians and cyclists have right of way, which is ideal for children to grow up in. “Drielanden” is a fairly modern neighbourhood further from the city centre (20 - 30 minute walk) and the water. It has 90’s and 2000’s homes and is very family friendly, also has its own shopping centre similar to Stadsweiden and a public secular primary school and three Christian schools. “Slingerbos” is a small neighbourhood with 60’s - 70’s homes, a Christian primary school and a public secular high school for mid to higher education. It is very close to the train and bus station, and about 10 - 15 minutes’ walk from the centre. “Frankrijk” is a fairly new neighbourhood with at least one Christian and one public secular primary school and a small shopping centre. It is one of the furthest from the city centre, but close to the small rural village of Hierden. It is family friendly. “Tweelingstad” is a neighbourhood with a lot of 60’s - 80’s housing with some modern low rise and several schools. Several traffic arteries run through here and it is overall a bit less safe. Also, an “AZC” (asylum centre) has been built near here and there is some light crime, mainly shoplifting. It is one of my least favourite neighbourhoods. There’s also the “Witte Hagen” and “Stadsdennen”, but I’m not too familiar with these neighbourhoods. They are home to a small Muslim minority, close to two mosques and an Islamic primary school. There is also at least one Christian primary school in one of these neighbourhood. All neighbourhoods have plenty of playgrounds and overall all neighbourhoods are family friendly. There are plenty of schools, and practically all have access to a local shopping centre. There are no “dangerous” area’s in Harderwijk. Though there is a street in the town centre where a lot of clubs and bars are, where there might be some hassle during late hours on Friday or Saturday nights. But I think that is common in most places around the world where alcohol is served. Harderwijk is a fairly Christian town with plenty of (historical) churches. There is a small Islamic minority and two mosques. It used to be a very Christian town and up until recently there were no shops open on Sundays. Since a few years there are a limited number of “Koopzondagen”. Christian political parties are often well represented in the town council. Hierden is a small rural and very Christian village practically merged with Harderwijk. It has its own primary school and several shops and plenty of historic farmhouses. Close to the station there’s also a Christian high school in a historic building, for higher levels of education. And a secular high school for lower education. The station area also has two small colleges for “MBO” levels of education. The city centre is home to Harderwijk’s former 18th and 19th century university. Universities and colleges in neighbouring cities are well within reach by train and students can travel for free (student loan / gift). What I like most are the historic city centre, and its position, with a large lake (former inland sea) to the west, a fairly large forest to the southeast (part of the “Veluwe), and rural fields and farmsteads to the north and south. All are connected with many many bikelanes and footpaths. Nature is beautiful and diverse. And a short distance across the water is the “Flevopolder” a unique man-made landscape. What I like least, if I’d have to think of something now, is that despite many buildings and landmarks being protected monuments, sometimes old buildings do get torn down. The most recent example being a beautiful restaurant from 1910, with a view of the old sea. All in all, a good place to live, with plenty of amenities, regardless of your personal convictions.
