With flowing fountains on roundabouts, attractive 19th Century houses, and lush green trees lining every avenue, it is a great place to live. Once at the end of Park Avenue, we cross Princes Avenue and into the oldest public park in the city, Pearson Park, and what a perfect day it was to visit, with the sun shining and gorgeous trees in full bloom.
The Avenues is an area of high status Victorian housing located in the north-west of the city and is formed by four main tree-lined straight avenues running west off Princes Avenue. The Avenues were originally constructed on a green field site known as Newland Tofts from the latter part of the 19th century onwards. Newland Tofts Lane would later become Princes Avenue, and Chanter Lands would eventually became Chanterlands Avenue.
The Victoria Fountain located at the junction of Victoria Avenue and Salisbury Street is a reproduction recreated in its original style and was opened on 8th July 2023, as the original fountain was removed and lost in the 1920’s or 1930’s. It features fish that spout water and the first line of a poem called 'Water' by Philip Larkin, who lived nearby. The inscription reads: 'If I were called in / To construct a religion / I should make use of water.'
The grade II listed mermaid fountain at Park Avenue is the only original left of the six fountains in the Avenues.
In 1860, the Mayor of Hull Zachariah Pearson, donated a 27-acre plot to the board of health on the proviso it would be developed as a park, and on 28 August 1860 the park was inaugurated with around 30,000 spectators in attendance.
The cupola resembling a miniature bandstand that sits atop a small hill in the park is among the oldest relics of Hull’s past. The cupola once topped Hull's original grand Town Hall which was designed by the famous Hull-born architect Cuthbert Brodrick and completed in 1866.
The cast iron MacFarlane no.7 fountain bowl was installed in 1864 and produced by specialist fountain and bandstand producers Walter MacFarlane & Co.
The ornamental iron arched gateway to the park was constructed by Young & Pool in 1863 and is now listed as a building of special architectural/historic interest.
