Street fair Showing the true face of Mauritius. Height of Indicipline in municipal areas . Clean and attractive in private areas. (Caudan waterfront) Two sides of the same coin. 😅

I agree. Great in places, dreadful in other places. Shops invade the footpaths with their wares, not enough space for pedestrians, no council regulations and guidelines apply, anyone can setup their stall, even in the gutters, unmaintained footpaths which can give you a broken ankle if you don't watch your steps, spitting everywhere, personal hygiene seems to be non-existent, rich foreigners setting up residence in prime locations pushing real estate prices up and up. Local and foreign thrill-seekers climb atop the fragile Pieter Both headrock thus affecting its stability, the poor becoming poorer (watch videos about the slums in MRU), the politicians look after themselves, crimes are rife, with knives being the weapons of choice. Many places e.g. Congoma, are being claimed by Hindus by stealth as they plant their small deities everywhere in the woods, even on the beach, knowing that non-Hindus are afraid of these gods; the practice of religious gory self-mutilations to the sound of drums on public roads, Mauritius has it all. Then there is the bad infrastructure, roads being higher than footpaths - bad during heavy rains - each shop makes its own stylised footpath, some slippery with ceramic floor tiles. A few years ago I was mugged in Grand Baie, my wallet, phone and passport stolen, leaving me bleeding in the gutter, Police not interested. Then there is the filth! Putrid rubbish and dead rats in the Central Market precinct, the smell undescribable! Stay in a hotel and put up with the ubiquitous SEGA every night...
