WALKING AROUND CARL JOHANS PARK IN NORRKÖPING SWEDEN

Carl Johans park is a park in Norrköping that was created in 1887 when, through financial support from consul John Philipson, Carl Johans torg, which was previously called Saltängstorget, was converted into a park environment. Since the beginning of the 20th century, there has been the motif discount Kaktusplanteringen.
The park, like the square it replaced, is named after a statue by Ludwig Schwanthaler, depicting Karl XIV Johan. The statue was created in Munich and erected in 1846, at the initiative of John Swartz, C.F. Lindberg, C.F. Tauvon and J.A. Forsell.
The bronze statue is made by Schwanthaler in Munich and cast by Ferdinand von Miller the Elder. It depicts the king, dressed in marshal's garb and military cloak, with a bare, laurel-wreathed head. The foundation stone was laid on 21 July 1845 by Queen Dowager Desideria, and the inauguration took place on 20 October 1846 in the presence of Oscar I, Queen Josefina, Dowager Queen Desideria and others. In a longer speech to the king, wholesaler Moselius explained the gratitude that prompted the statue's departure. A medal was struck to commemorate the festivities.
The park was originally called Karl Johans park, later Carl Johansparken and since 1999 Carl Johans park.
