Exactly this. There’s a contemplativeness, being fully present and creation of meaning in this video that there are hints of in other videos (especially some of the ones where a project doesn’t go to plan). But this was so distilled and focused. I really like this glimpse into how Laura parses the world, and what’s important to her. A lot of depth here. I also think that sometimes, a person really needs a big, fully immersive shift in order to feel alive and recapture meaning and purpose. This seems to be absolutely that, and I’m finding myself trying to find ways I can carry that energy into my own new start that’s happening within the next few months.

Not really. You cannot see or get to know LA in a car. I'm originally from the east coast of American where walking is normal. I hate that I have to drive so much here but on my bicycle I see details of the city.

I was about to post the same message and saw this one. Laura is a natural presenter and her background gives a very interesting take on what she encounters. I see a whole new video stream here.
So this was an amazing storytelling video, highly symbolic, perfectly edited - and yet as a German I can only think how this was the most German thing you could’ve done 😂❤

@@P3x310- My pet peeve is that the majority of multi tools have these mandatory bottle/can openers. The world has moved on but the SAK is stuck in tradition. Parcel hook? Leather awl? Wire stripper? Bottle opener? Speaking for myself, I could open a bottle with any tool found on the SAK. How about a good plastic package opener? Maybe a probe to reset electronic devices. A larger foldable lanyard that does not require a key ring to attach to another key ring. A pocket clip? 🤔

This was so very German, in the best possible way. To be entirely honest, when I saw her open a glass bottle in the heat I 100% expected beer. I’m a German expat in a predominantly car-based environment not unlike LA at all, and I really, really loved this video. Can’t wait to see more.

When I came to LA for the first time, I was absolutely shocked by the same thing : how unwalkable it is, how dirty it is, but also how weird. So I did the same thing you did : started a map of my own. Pinned a map to a wall and a bit of tracing paper on it. And every time I walked anywhere, I traced the streets. So little by little I had a map of only where I'd been and it helped me figure the city out

I’m half Danish, half English and grew up between those countries. I’ve lived in the States for the past decade and have to say this video captured my experience of being European in America better than anything I’ve seen. All the little things you zoomed in on are the kind of things my eyes notice. Sometimes those parts of American urban life feel alienating, but they also come to feel familiar. Thank you for this beautifully told video. I’d love things more in this vein, alongside the maker and house-building videos - you have a story to tell about moving to the US.
Seeing you all laugh at the absurdity of making an epic journey only to be thwarted at the last moment is comedy gold. Having experienced this outcome I would have been disappointed if there had been an abundance of maps waiting for you. Cannot wait to see what comes next!
The author Ray Bradbury lived in Los Angeles, and he used to enjoy walking in the evening. Even in the 1950s, a pedestrian was so unusual that he was often stopped by police officers who asked him what he was doing. It happened so often that he wrote a short story about it, "The Pedestrian." Fortunately, its predictions haven't come true . . . yet.

I met a woman, at the hotel I work at, who had just broken up with her girlfriend in NYC, and was driving to LA to start a new life. She's a documentary maker. I told her about your channel, she looked you up and she was stoked! You teach us all about rolling with life and making happiness where you are. Thank you for that.
This is the most stereotypical walking to somewhere in LA experience you possibly could have had! I love that you framed it! I tried to take a bus in LA only one time, and the experience was so bad I never tried to walk anywhere again. LA is a collection of islands of little walkable cool spots in a sea of unwalkable car hell. Thank you for putting such a positive spin on your day. You make youtube a better place.
If a physical map is what you want, I recommend a copy of the Thomas Guide for LA. Not free, and pretty big to lug around if you are walking (it’s more like an almanac than a foldable map), but a Thomas Guide in your car was required for LA newcomers before everyone had a mini-computer in their pocket. Good luck, stay safe, and happy rambling. Also, apologies for the imperial measurement system.

I think the intent of this video is to show a side of the USA that Europeans don't know about. In every major city of Europe, if there's a visitors center there's a free map of the city. It's a normal thing for someone coming from Europe to go to a visitor or tourist center in the USA and have this WTF moment of what? No map?
I totally get the (perhaps very European/German) urge to explore a city by walking. I went on a work trip to Tokyo last week and, on our day off, my colleague and I decided to NOT take the subway to some of the major sights, but to explore the city by walking instead. It was a very nice way to get a feel for the place, to catch its vibe. And we did discover some cool and interesting places that we would have missed otherwise.
Well I think the lesson learned here is that there's no roadmap for life. Just get out there and live it.

As a long time Southern Californian native, welcome! Walking the streets of LA for 5 hours in her first week is such a Laura thing to do! Shouldn’t have expected anything less. This was a great way to see LA , not just pass by it at 65MPH. Since it is so spread out, covers every imaginable geography and is such a melting pot, LA is super diverse. There is no single LA “vibe”; there are dozens and dozens. You stumbled upon some… good and not so good. I am really glad you decided to spend time here and grateful you are bringing us along for the ride. Welcome to SoCal! You’re gonna have a blast. (Also crossing fingers we see more collabs with Simone, Adam and others! 🤞)
I’m going to really enjoy your observations about the city. You’ve become a spectacular videographer over the years and have a real eye for beauty in unusual places.
I LOVE that you did this. So many people write off LA, having never taken the time to really explore it. They just limit themselves to whatever small slice they experienced, and think that defines the city. I was born and raised here and I'm still discovering new places, things and foods. Like every city, there's good and bad. Kudos to you for diving right in!
@tortellinifettuccine
4 ай бұрын
"Like every city there is good and bad" yeah no...this isn't a city, and the amount of good and bad differs greatly between different cities. She's European, the US is not new to her, She's being nice. If you went to Europe you'd see what she was used to, and you'd see that's what a city is. LA is not a city, it's not dense enough for it, it's not walkable in any capacity, it has practically zero public transportation in relation to its size and population, etc. This entire video was about how awful LA is no matter as nice as it's presented, because that's the truth that you need to accept. It's disgusting, it's dangerous, and there's nothing to see, because it all looks exactly like the same car centric infustructure.

Loved your story! My own favorite way of exploring a new city is a “slingshot walk”: I ride a random bus or subway to its final stop and then walk from some suburb or industrial zone back into the center.

Of all the video content that I consume, I look forward to yours. I agree with the person that called you a story teller. This was fantastic.
It's not the destination, it's the getting there! ❤ Have fun in L.A. Laura!
Very recognizable. When I moved out to Brussels from a quiet town in the Netherlands for my studies, I walked all over and large distances to landmarks. I still 100% believe that is what imprinted the city in my mind. I can find my way in it even though I don't know exactly where I am, it made me connect to the city.
This is, I think, one of your best videos to date! The making ones are awesome, but this is a whole different story, and you tell it beautifully.
I love it! Walking 9 mls for a free map and not getting it because it’s out of stock - hilarious and genius at the same time 😂 I admire your approach to getting the feel, that’s just Laura… 🤩
Servus Laura! In 1996 I was in LA on my honeymoon with my newlywed. I know exactly how you felt. In Germany, especially in the countryside, we are used to doing a lot of things on foot. Back then, LA was less pedestrian-friendly. We explored the city on a Vespa scooter. With a city map, of course. GPS or Google Maps didn't exist yet! But I have to say, it was a great experience, with many, mostly pleasant, surprises. Have fun and lots of exciting projects!!
Best First milestone ever. Best Adventure documentary ever. Love your work! You are an Artist! I know it just fell on you. But, you knew how to receive it. Soon you & L.A. will be one. Keep making tracks so we can see you. Til next time, thx
Travelog with Laura is going to be fun! Congrats on doing the most un-American thing (walking instead of driving) in one of the most American cities. 😁 The fact that they didn't even have the map you were looking for is just the perfect ending for the adventure. Welcome to the US! Thanks for sharing!
You jumped in, you gained your first impressions, you learned so much, you found materials, you got some art out of it, and you have a great story. Wonderful beginnings! 👋🏽😃💛
Laura, this video made me smile so much! Your joy and curiosity is so infectious!
Welcome to the U.S. I hope the rest of your journey is more fruitful than your first. You have a great positive attitude.
Welcome to LA, they gave you a freeway map !!! I've lived here almost 40 years. LA is full of neighborhoods. I live in Long Beach, we are on a South facing beach (next stop Antartica) I finally figure that out after many years. So glad to have you here.
I have found that when I walk through my hometown where I was born and raised I always see things I haven't seen before. Something about walking slows time down to where we get to see things from a different angle and time to soak that scene in.
I love this literal boots-on-the-ground approach to getting a feel for a new city. An elegant (if slightly sweaty) plan to make the most of the journey itself. Your positivity and sense of adventure are fabulous. Thank you for sharing, it's clear these "getting started" videos are going to be inspirational.
Walking the streets of LA is a great experience. Mercifully, going through the rougher areas was not a bad experience. Having a physical map you can use to relate different areas on at a glance is crucial for a place as georgraphically large as LA. So do go back to get a street map but call ahead...

I think people get stuck in the news or movies telling them this crazy idea that cities or areas are dangerous. The rates are generally lower for cities than rural. News likes drama. Walking through or living in "bad areas" has really shown to me that it's not really that bad. I'm in the next largest city in the US, the one certain news channel would tell you are a war zone. Never had anyone ever try to grab my gear. Making maps is fun. Grab a detailed map from a GIS or government site. I have one of my city down to the buildings. I've printed some pretty large posters over the years. She should do that, and kinda keep it to draw on to record her travels. Mark the locations of free pink tape.

Cities are majority completely safe. Literally just do not walk into an alley in the dark with your head down and headphones in. That simple. And don’t get involved in illegal drugs or crime. Otherwise the crime rates are actually safer.
The quintessential LA map is the Thomas Brothers Guide. Before google maps there was Mapquest and before Mapquest everyone had a Thomas Brothers guide in their car.
Looks like the Thomas Guide is still published. It's the essential L.A. physical map, if you can acquire such.
I absolutely understand the need for a physical map. It really helps, I use it too.
The Kampf video I didn't know I needed. Thank you.
Omg, that was quite the metaphor!! Good luck with your new adventure! Hugs from 🇨🇦

Well, I'm sure you brought this with you to L.A. but, you certainly have the right attitude for starting something there. An open mind. All the best.
There is no book on how to be a human being in these times, or in this context, but you, Laura Kampf, are KILLING IT! Thank you for all you provide and share!!
Felt a bit lost watching this, but seeing you picking up potentials from the ground gave me a kind of hope? Wishing you all the best.
I'm super happy for you! I'm really looking forward to following your journey. If more people would seek their way and read life like you do, the world would such a better place. Thank you so much for sharing.
Others have already said it but a Thomas Guide is what you need. It will show you how every part of the city blends in with every other part. Back before people had navigation systems in their cars, EVERYONE had a Thomas Guide in their car. That said, the city has so many special pockets interesting things. Walking is a good way to really discover treasure. Beleive it or not, LA does have public transportation. Try learning that as well. There is some really fun art at each station.
Excellent movie! A fantastic transition into a new adventure, Thank you for sharing it with us.
I love this video. It brought back memories of moving from Toronto to L.A. and my exploration of this new world and its cultures. It's wonderful that you have friends and lovers who joyfully share your passion and excitement.
You’re such good observer and a entertaining story teller. Thank you for sharing this first big walk! Großartige Folge!
You have to visit the Griffith Observatory and stay for the sunset and see the city from there at night. It was my favorite thing to do when i was there for three months. Grüße aus Berlin
Great video! It was so interesting to note the things that caught your eye that I as an American would totally take for granted. I feel inspired to try to be a tourist in my own city and do more walking, especially since all of the leaves will be turning soon so it will be beautiful this time of year. I'm excited to see your continued LA adventures and I'm glad that being so close to Simone means you're able to hang out more easily, whether on or off camera!
Ich liebe dieses Video. Grossartige Impressionen, das Ankommen irgendwo, das Gehen, das Spüren und Erleben... Gerne mehr davon!
As someone born in Los Angeles, having lived here most of my life, it’s interesting to see what other people think. On your other video where you said you were moving to LA, I made a post warning you and offering some advice. Los Angeles is a surprisingly tough place. A lot of people come here expecting sunshine and rainbows and end up not making it out. Don’t mean to sound ominous but the quicker you sharpen your teeth, the better.

Lots of love Laura! That's exactly what I would have done to get the feel of a new-to-me city
This was so heartwarming! Thanks for making the video!
What an adventure ... I hope you enjoy yourself. You are quite stubborn to walk in a non-pedestrian city 😆 Loved the video.
Good luck with the move Laura! You will make LA your own in no time
Loved you going in head first. With a place such as LA one has to either melt into it or keep doing their own thing to spite it, and I love your approach.
I find it so funny that you went on such a journey for what you got! It’s an absolutely perfect metaphor for life I think and I’m so excited to see what happens next in this adventure!! I would love to meet you one day!

Haven't been watching every single video, I always thought it would be the case, but you saying "because my girlfriend lives there" made me really happy to hear 🥰
I'm so glad we got to see who Laura is dating. I respect their privacy but was beginning to be so preoccupied with the possibility that it might have been Simone that I was unable to relax and enjoy the video 😅

@mariannerdy1137, please don’t neglect the city’s remarkable art museums, including the two Getty campuses: the mind blowing art museum and its amazing garden and also “The Villa” with its ocean view at Malibu, filled with ancient art and with half a dozen peaceful gardens. If you wish, you can reach both by city bus, and the Getty charges no admission. Then allow two days for the art museum and immense gardens at the Huntington Foundation in Malibu. It takes a full day just to absorb the three Asian gardens there. The LA climate is paradise and every stick stuck in the ground flourishes. Please attend a performance at the philharmonic’s Walt Disney Concert Hall (named for him and not a Disney Corp property). Enjoy.

@DRL1320 also known as the only places of any remote interest in the entire city, that of course are also car centric. It's not a city, it's a suburb
I feel like most cities in the U.S are geared more for cars/trucks than pedestrians/cyclists. I went to The Netherlands a few years ago, and I was shocked to see all the bikes in Ampsterdam, just a sea of bikes, it was awesome. Not to mention the public transit.
Fantastic video! I 100% agree with you on the value of walking; my family moved to a new city a couple years ago, so I started going for walks through the neighborhood and to the local restaurants and it really helped me to become grounded in our new home!
I love your projects, but I have to say, I think this is my favorite video of yours. I've started over in a number of cities in and out of California, and I can very much relate. I think you'll love it.
Thank you for making us travel with you 🙏
Hard work and determination makes the maker, great first episode Laura… I’ll be tuning in for the next one.
Now that you and Simone are neighbors - more live videos with her? I love the interaction between you and her
Absolutely love this! I left L.A. 20 years ago (for Oregon) and I completely resonate with how difficult it is to get around as a pedestrian there. Everytime I go visit, I hope it has become a more accessible walking city.
I literally laughed out loud at the end! LA is my hometown (though I have been in Sweden and UK the last 12 years). But I grew up in LA. And I can tell you that I don't know a single person that has walked that distance through those neighborhoods. From just this one experience I think you've learned more about life in LA than people who have lived there for years. I really enjoyed this and I look forward to seeing more of your adventures there!
such a joyful and hopeful video! that was lovely to watch! have fun in LA!
Walking in certain districts and most definitely Riding bikes are the way to experience the kindest side of LA. So grateful you’re blessing this creative city with your presence. LA needs to be seen for its creative abundance and cultural depth. It truly is such a beautiful space to be, especially during the cool months around the corner. Much love and many blessings on your journey
If your gf is a AAA member, have her take you to one of their offices. They have a TON of maps for California. Regional map of Southern California, San Fernando Valley, LA County, City of LA...they should have them.
Hi Laura, I lived in LA for 5 years and left a few months ago partially because I had no job due to the Writers' Strike and partially because I learned more about who I am and want to pursue a different life. I really loved seeing you walk past familiar places and seeing you progress on your journey-it gives me hope for my journey. Thank you!
I love this so much. It’s the perfect metaphor for what your life is right now. Navigating a new existence, a new living arrangement which impacts an existing relationship for all of you. There’s an outline, but it’s still full of unnamed streets.
Glorious Laura! A real-life punchline

It's inspiring, how you start a new life far from home.
This is hilarious. I love your attitude and the fact that out of this „fail“ you have created a good stor to tell. I would love to see the printed map framed, hanging in your La- workshop some day.
That's crazy, no maps! What a great adventure. I love that you framed "the map"! Fun video. Be careful picking up anything off the streets in LA...
People leaves so many things outside their houses on garbage day no doubt you will find so many things! ❤ I been your fan for the longest time and I’m so happy for you and also happy you are sharing your journey with us!
Although it can be scary and sometimes dangerous I love walking in my city - you find so many hidden things in strange places including great art, interesting ruins, little oasis of gardens and parks, etc. LA is definitely a city that takes some effort to get to know really well.
Aww I’m glad you framed you 9:13 map. Your your own person Laura with adventure in you soul. You’ve allowed us the privilege to join you on your most intimate views on life through your projects and playful brilliant ideas. Your love life. And now you found love. I’m so happy for you. I’m from LA and SoCal 38 years. It’s a rough city. My 4 year old use to say that she loves Disneyland and knots Berry Farm but does not like “lost Angeles”. The ultimate jewel 💎 in life is to love and have someone to share it with. Best wishes to you and your girlfriend ❤❤I moved to Seattle and love it. 9:13
Awesome story. Your videos always brighten my day. I am with you on physical maps. They give the sense of scale, the relationships, that no on line system can. In my collection, I have LA, SoCa, San Diego, San Fran, the peninsula, the full bay area, and (don't ask) san Bernadino, from 1989 when I was exploring employment (bay area) and grad school options. All out of date, by now, but still a pleasure to look at. I will say that my favourite is a 1.8X2.4m of th eHendersonville NC region. A lot of great detail of the Blue Ridge Pky (biked it in 2008, stayed w friends near Hville on the way)
Excellent video with the perfect ending! You captured some of LA's less advertised/seen character very well - and kindly... I have walked in LA as a tourist, nut not 9 miles. I am not that brave. I also worked there on a couple of projects and I have a very strange love/hate relationship with that city.
That was great! Lol Dear Friend, before walking 9 miles anywhere in the really hot places in the US, call ahead and make sure they have what you want. Lol This was a great metaphor, and as usual, no matter what happens, you end up with a smile. And we love you for it.❤️🤗🐝 btw… what you need is a Gazetteer Atlas (a huge multi page map) of LA. They usually have them at truck stops.🤗👍
Wow. That is crazy. I love that the squirrels have seen some ****. Good start to your journey here.
