Walk with me | Ep. 02 - Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi, India | Razia Sultan, Jama Masjid.. | Turkman Gate

Old Delhi, Delhi, India | 2022: We start the video in the Turkman Gate neighborhood of Old Delhi, within the city of Delhi. While Turkman Gate location sits within the Mughal city of Shahjahanabad built under the rule of Shahjahan, some of its predates Shahjahanabad. Turkman gate represents a curious mishmash of the different dynasties that ruled Delhi from the 1200s to the 1600s - namely the Mamluks (Razia Sultan), the Tughlaqs (Firoz Shah Tughlaq), and the Mughals.
We start exploring this area with the tomb of probably the earliest female ruler of Delhi, Razia Sultan.
The tomb sits in a very cramped and unusual location for this once powerful empress who ruled Delhi for 3-4 years in the 1200s. There is a curious story to how the tomb came to be here in a part of Delhi that was mostly barren at the time of her rule of the city which was mostly limited to the Qutub and surrounding areas of Delhi.
After bidding adieu to Razia (and her sister Sazia lying right next to her according to some historians), we walk the lanes of Turkman Gate to then reach a Tughlaq era mosque that was built under the rule of Feroz Shah Tughlaq. This mosque was built in the 1300s and is surrounded from all sides by rows of houses and narrow lanes.
After spending some quite and peaceful minutes at this mosque we walk out and start heading towards one of the biggest and most famous mosques of India, Jama Masjid. After a quick tea break we head into the Jama Masjid and spend a good amount of time exploring this mosque that was built under the mughal ruler Shahjahan in the mid 1600s. The video ends just as we are heading out of the east exit of Jama Masjid that faces the equally if not more famous Red Fort and the mostly ignored river Yamuna just beyond the fort.

@dr.artistic1985 So….Google is a bit unreliable in the area. Ideally…you should get off at Chawri Bazaar metro station and walk south east on the Sitaram Bazar road. Take help from the locals as you walk. Still…let me share a Google link for reference below - maps.app.goo.gl/7EHrN4XHNUggtEKPA?g_st=ic

Hi, So nice to see Old Delhi. My Grand Father use to Own Dozens of Properties in this neighborhood. Most famous one was Razia Begum ki Haveli near Hoz Kazi. If you have any pictures of it I will appreciate. I live in NY City.

Wow. You do have a deep connection to Old Delhi then. I did spend a good amount of time exploring Razia Sultan’s Tomb which is in the video. But I think I did not explore Razia’s Haveli yet. And cool. NYC is a nice city to be in. I quite love that city too.
