Walküre, Bayreuth, 29. Aug. 2018, Curtain Calls

Музыка

A very successful performance. Great singers and a REALLY great conductor! Plácido found so many rarely heard nuances in the score. Others might have a different taste, but I have never heard, for example, Brünnhilde's "Todesverkündigung" ("Announciation of Death"? Sorry, I do not know the English word) conducted more touching, more "human" and yet transcendental than this evening.
The cast was:
Siegmund: Vincent Wolfsteiner
Sieglinde: Anja Kampe
Brünnhilde: Catherine Foster
Wotan: Greer Grimsley
Fricka: Marina Prudenskaya
Hunding: Tobias Kehrer
Conductor: Plácido Domingo
Staging: :((( Frank Castorf :(((

Concerning the boooo's at Walküre I in 2018. I was there and, yes, Placido Domingo got some boooo's. I did NOT boo. He may have developed nuances etc., but in my humble opinion, some other parts were not all that impressive. I was at the Petrenko Ring, 2014 (I), with the unforgotten Johan Bohta (and also with Anja Kampe and Catherine Foster), and - sorry - Petrenko's tension throughout was superb, incredibly dense. Bavarian radio also had a broadcast ... Let's leave Castorf's staging aside: the 2014 Walküre was incredible.

Thank you for telling who the did the staging -- Castorf -- because, OMG, what is happening at Bayreuth lately? (In Germany for that matter.) Have the Wagners lost their minds? (The Lohengrin this year! Insects?!) He looks great don't he? He's a master musician of profound experience and intelligence, how could he not be a wonderful conductor. And he conducts for the singers, which may be why you heard the nuances you spoke of in the description. Those who have never heard conducting sensitive to the singers may find it odd at first, but once they listen more astutely, they'll find it more illuminating. And thank you for continuing to post these videos of the curtain calls whenever the Great Domingo performs - it really picks up my spirit. Mil gracias y hasta la proxima, salud. (Oh, and I think you mean to say Death Announcement. Todesverkündigung.)

I'm a little confused. Was Domingo booed at the curtain call? To tell you the truth, I'm a great fan of Domingo and have seen his extraordinary performances since the 1970s. But I find it hard to think of him conducting Walkure.

Apparently, there were a few people who booed at the first of three performances. We were at the third one, and he got a lot of applause there. People who were there for all three performances (and for some other Wagner operas) credibly told us that it was just a handful of people during the first performance who booed. I am a (singer) Domingo fan AND a Wagnerian. I've heard countless Walküres in my life, under many different conductors. But I can tell you that - for my taste (as a Wagnerian first, NOT as a Domingo fan) it was one of the most memorable performances ever. He has a different way to conduct it. Some people said it was too slow for their taste. But I happily accepted a slower tempo (as did the singers!), because it gave me some incredible moments and new insights into the score. As I mentioned above, I've never heard the "Todesverkündigung" conducted more sensitive than in this performance.
