İzmir‘in Bergama ilçesinde yer alan bu Asklepion’un MÖ 4.yy’de kurulduğu düşünülüyor. 9 yüzyıl boyunca şifa dağıtmaya devam etmiştir. Geyikli Dağı’ndaki bir vadi içinde konumlanan, şifalı su kaynakları bulunduğu düşünülen bir konuma sahiptir. Bu şifalı sular ile insanların iyileştirilmesi sağlanmıştır. Bergama Asklepion ‘u Galenos gibi ünlü hekimlerinin yetiştiği bir tıp okuludur ve dünyanın ilk psikiyatri hastanesidir.
Bergama Asklepionu’nda en önemli yöntemlerden telkin ve fizyoterapinin dışında su-çamur banyoları, masajlar, şifalı otlar,müzik, çeşitli törenler de tedavi yöntemlerindendi. Asklepion ,şifalı sulara, akıl hastalarının su ve kuş sesleri eşliğinde gezinebileceği koridorlara tünellere ve mermer tiyatrolara sahipti. Helioterapi (güneşle tedavi), teatroterapi (tiyatro), teoterapi (inanç), jimnoterapi (spor); Asklepion’un ünlü tedavi yöntemleri olarak bilinir.Bir hasta, bu merkeze geldiğinde önce şifalı sularla temizlenirdi daha sonra tanrıya sağlık dileyip çeşitli adaklarda bulunurdu. Uyunur ve görülen rüyanın rahip hekimler tarafından analiz edilmesiyle tedavi programı çıkarılırdı.
Bergamalı doktorların hastaların rüyalarını yorumlayıp psikoterapiyi kullandıkları görülmüştür.Ayrıca ağrıları dindirmek amaçlı ilk kez afyon maddeli ilaçlar Asklepion’daki bu doktorlar tarafından kullanılmıştır.
Asklepeionlardaki hekimlere “Asklepiad” ya da Rahip-Hekim deniliyordu.[1] Asklepion’un hastaları ve hastalıkları çeşitliydi .En çok kadınlar buraya iyileşmeye gelirdi.Felç, göğüs darlığı, mide ağrıları, delilik gibi ağır hastalarla, en hafif yarası, beresi olanlar da gelmekteydi.Ölüm riski olan hastalar bu sağlık merkezine giremezdi yoksa merkezin iyileştirici gücünün kaybolacağına inanılırdı.[1]

Heliotherapy (sun treatment), theatrotherapy (theatre), theotherapy (faith), gymnotherapy (sports); It is known as the famous treatment methods of Asklepion. When a patient came to this center, he would first be cleansed with healing waters, then wished health to the god and made various offerings. He slept and the treatment program was prepared after the dream was analyzed by priest physicians.
It was seen that the doctors of Bergama interpreted the dreams of the patients and used psychotherapy. In addition, opium-containing drugs were used for the first time by these doctors in Asklepion to relieve pain.
The physicians in the Asclepeion were called “Asclepiad” or Priest-Physician.[1] Asclepion's patients and diseases were varied. Mostly women came here to heal. Severe patients such as paralysis, chest tightness, stomachaches, insanity, and those with the slightest wound and bruise were also coming. Patients at risk of death could not enter this health center, otherwise the healing power of the center would be lost. it was believed.[1]
