Tour of the historic old town of Spandau
Starting from the subway station Altstadt Spandau, you enter the old town, which today is a pedestrian zone and shopping mile. Even though the old building fabric was largely lost through wars and fires, the course of the alleys bears witness to the medieval layout. Houses of different architectural styles line up next to each other and tell of different eras. Worth seeing is the Reformation Square with the St. Nikolai Church, a three-aisled Gothic brick church. Not far away stands the "Gothic House" (Breite Straße 32), which was built in a rare and costly stone construction method for the 15th century. The reticulated ribbed vault, the double pointed arch arcade and the - later built - classicistic exterior facade have been preserved. Today, the "Gothic House" houses a museum of urban history and changing exhibitions. Furthermore, you will find a local tourist information with more insider tips for the neighborhood. A longer remnant of the 14th century city wall has been preserved on the Viktoria-Ufer.
