Whenever an aircraft is generating lift, it's also creating a phenomenon called wake turbulence. It is most often observed behind large and heavy airline jets, but what about something smaller? Will a virtually weightless paper airplane produce the same thing, but on a smaller scale? Watch to find out!

See this is how "Chemtrails" AREN'T a conspiracy. It's just the exhaust and the plane making these vortexes.
Very nicely done Nick. Thanks for taking all that time to get those effective clips.
Not sure why but, ever since I was young I liked vortexes drawing tornado's. Aviation was also in the backdrop and once I learned that wingtips and flaps or any tip really can create a vortex I was intrigued. Once I started plane spotting I learned that off of some airliners the vortexes from the flaps are often audible given their high velocity as they break down. I realized that foreword swept wings create the strongest tip vortices as well. I even made a DIY wind tunnel at one point so I could visualize vortexes and I built a few delta wing designs to see if I could tailor wings to create vortices where I wanted them. Like delta wings with dog teeth leading edges and such. For some reason I like showing people things they've never seen or perhaps, things that are invisible under normal circumstances. I simply like seeing people's eyes light up when they see something new that opens their eyes.
Wow! This is truly incredible. The shot at 4:07 was magnificent.
The cinematography in this video is fantastic. This was a relaxing, entertaining and informative experience. I'm very happy to have stumbled upon this video, great job!
state of the art, genius, perfect. Congratulations! Sharing it right now!
Beautiful! This can definitely be used to teach students about wake turbulence
Impressive how you managed to put the chemtrail dispensers in those tiny paper planes =P great video, love the results. Those were some gorgeous vortices.

Very ground breaking! It shows beautifully the vortices for what they are, mini tornadoes. It's amazing you not only visualize the downward flowing mass of air but also the low pressure tornadoes which draw the fog towards the wingtips!

Great production Nick! Very informative!! I am about to put a couple of recent aircraft vortices on Instagram and as shown in your video on the smaller scale, the images also show the wing tip trails from the aircraft leading into the cloud vortice! Well done and thanks again for the opportunity to assist. 🙏☺️

Saw on DDOI and came to check out full video. Was not disappointed
Nick; Thank you for your fine camara work. I believe for the first time, I understand how these effect is generated: Your videos make it very clear; the plane flies by pushing the air mass down as it passes (as shown by the flat base to the disturbance as the plane just passes. Now with all this air mass being pushed lower, a partial vacuum is created (or a hole in the air) and so the nearest air to fill that void is the air on the sides of the displaced (pushed downward) rectangle of air; This side air rolls sideways and downwards to fill this vacated space; thus creating the vortex swirl you have captured. I had been taught that all this is caused by air swirling from under the wing to take the place of the low pressure air on the top of the wind! The truth you have so ably depicted now makes perfect sense! Thank you!
I'm from daily dose of internet and I hope this Video gets popular :)
I've never known how lift and wake turbulence look in 3D space like that!! Great shots!

Beautiful video and great insight into wake turbulence! One question: how did you produce such a good cloud? I constructed a mini wind tunnel to show kids at school, but creating dense enough "smoke" for flow visualization wasn't possible.
I just found you in a super random way - through a comment you left on a video of an Amish Guy seeing a GPS for the first time - and I am so impressed. Cool video. Nit picky point: Wing tip vortices are not a byproduct of wake turbulence. It is the other way around. The vortices are creating the wake turbulence.

Hi Nick, great video. Your smoke machine creates great smoke. Do you have a link to it?
As a kid I used to use a smoking joss stick held up in front of one of my many scale 1/144 or 1/72 models. Model in left hand, joss stick in the right, by walking forward slowly the laminar smoke trail would curl around the model. Concorde at high angle of attack was a revelation for me! (lighting was important!)
