Tuesday 10th February, I was travelling to sixth form on the bus like any normal day. I don't like electronic music usually and I'd heard the original of this song about a million times. But that Tuesday I gave it a go and listened to the lyrics properly. So I listened to that song on repeat the whole hour journey to class. When I got there my usually jovial teacher was quiet and speaking to one of his colleagues. All of us bustled in like usual but there was a cold air hanging in that room. Our teacher quietly told us that our classmate Ed had died - he killed himself by walking in front of a train. And what made it all the more extraordinary was he seemed to have everything to live for. 12 A*s at GCSE, a place at the world famous Cambridge University, a typical happy family, a job, many many friends. No one would have guessed how bad he'd been feeling. Since that morning there hasn't been a day go by where I can't help but listen to this song. To me, this is Ed's song. It encompasses the dark grief I witnessed an entire class fall into that day. And Madilyn's accoustic version gives Ed ever more justice. If you read all of this thank you and remember what an incessant and cruel illness depression is. RIP Ed.
