    The Marvel universe created an entire fictional domain known as the "Kingdom of Wakanda" ruled by T'Challa the Black Panther. What if Wakanda was real though? How could we break down the core attributes of the country's domain, landscape, culture and diplomacy? In this video I try my best to break it down. What do you think? ( Oh, and 10 points for every #Beetlegate2018 person creeping in to the comments of this video, just watch lol)

    Wakanda, as confirmed by the map in Civil War, is located between Uganda, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Kenya. AS for desert, you gotta ignore that and say that in MCU, it is green. Also, their language is not just Bantu, but the movie used Xhosa, spoken in South Africa. So im guessing that it is a language closely related to Xhosa but got very separated, much like how Hungarian language is Finno-Ugric despite being in Central Europe.

    I saw it at a cinema in Mbarara, Uganda and the atmosphere was phenomenal. People were so excited that a Hollywood movie showed something with their people group in focus. Also the fact that it showed the location of Wakanda as somewhere near Uganda, seemed to make them very proud of their country. So great to see Africa getting some credit in the movie business. Thanks for the heads up, Barbs. Geography Now is the best!

    4:28, "if they still hold the ties to ancient Egypt" THANK YOU. The Cushitic language structure is very similar to the Ancient Egyptian, like 15-20% of our language has the same words and root words in Ancient Egyptian. The rest being 25-35% Arabic, and 50-60% pure Cushitic.

    The copts are the like Northwest-African descendants of ancient Egyptians with very similar languages, they're genetically more related to other indigenous north africans like the amazigh and tuareg but further east. The Cushites on the other hand has less language similarities but more genetic similarities and more like the Northeast-African descendants of ancient Egyptians. Plus their are more Cushites than Copts, and have recorded historical ties with ancient Egypt. Read about the Land of Punt en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_of_Punt

  • @forreal7403

    @forreal7403

    +Mario Moreno you're right Coptic is linguistically very to ancient Egyptian, but Cushitic is the closest outside of the "Egyptian" language itself in the Afroasiatic sphere. Also the Cushites are more genetically related to ancient Egyptians and are historically recorded as being more connected. Copts also lost their Ancient Egyptian culture, and culturally more resemble Arabs and other middle-eastern Christians. While Cushites on the other hand still have their ancient Egyptian culture, they still have very similar attire and dances to the Ancient Egyptians and some Cushitic people in eastern Ethiopia still believe in Horus (egyptian) or Huur (Cushitic) the sun God Ra or Qo'Ra in Cushit Egyptian heaven Neter or Neder (Cushitic) Egyptian spirit Ka or Kaah in Cushitic and many many more examples Culturally and Historically the Cushitic people are the most similar to ancient Egyptians today.

As a marvel-lite who focused on the X-Men, the other comics never really got my attention, but I love how the non-mutant relate heroes have gotten so much love. With that said, I appreciate your analysis on the fictionalized Wakanda, giving it light. I have to ask, will you be teaching at some point? Id take your class anyday man. Keep up the great work! Will you also do other fictional Marvel nations? Such as the ones carved out from Romania, like Latveria. According to Marvel, I'm not a Romanian going to college in a Western city of my own country, but in the capital of Latveria.

    It seems the language is very bantu based. Im tanzanian so speak swahili. A bantu based arabic influenced language. P.s. Taifa Ngao loosely means Nation of Shields. So makes sense that they're the defence force. Any question bring them on! Btw, it seems to me that Azania = Tanzania and Wakanda being a city state is like the real life Buganda inside Uganda which is an autonomous monarchy, much like Wakanda

    I haven't seen many fantasy worlds based on African cultures in video games, movies or books. Knowing how much detail went into Wakanda makes me want to watch it. "The world" is often my favorite part of fiction.

    Hey Barbie! Just a friendly geogratip. In the Swahili language there’s a difference between ng and ‘ng. Ng with no apostrophe is pronounced the was you pronounced Lupita’s surname in the video, while ng’ is pronounced more like the way you pronounced “Ngao” (without the hard g sound). Nyong’o then, is properly pronounced without any g sound. One of the pronunciational traps in a language with relatively few of them.

    Despite ostensibly being in the northern part of Africa near Ethiopia and South Sudan, Wakandans speak the Xhosa language, which is native to South Africa. While it is a little weird that they speak a language from a completely separate geographic region, at least they’re speaking a _real_ African language at all. Boseman learned the language specifically for his role in Civil War and Black Panther. So good on them for being semi-realistic with the language. Oh also, the Black Panther isn’t always the same person as the king. In Civil War, T’Challa was the Black Panther while his father was the king of Wakanda. Only when his father was killed did T’Challa become king, and he kept the title of Black Panther. T’Challa being both the king and the Black Panther is a major source of conflict for him, since he has trouble balancing his heroics and his duties as King.
