I mean as an Indian living in Netherlands, its always good to learn the language of the land cuz learning a new language opens a whole lot of opportunities, you can communicate with people, you can learn more about their culture etc...but at the same time people of the community should also be respectful and understanding if the other person cant speak their language...

Nessa M That’s his point tho. I think what he means is that if you LIVE in a foreign country, you should do your best to assimilate into the culture and learn the language. If you’re just traveling it’s different. If an American goes to Mexico to live, they should learn Spanish. Same thing, nothing to do with race. No one is saying they can’t speak Spanish, just that they should also learn English if they live here since it’s a majority English speaking country

In his case, he is 100% Pipil. So their dialect is not even the same through out that country alone, so it sure isnt the same in Mexico. I was taught at 12 years of age, Mexico has over 72 dialects ALONE and some still speak their original language the Aztec Nautu tongues. Why does someone that speaks spanish GOT TO COME FROM Mexico? Like that is THE ONLY spanish speaking country in central America.

Agreed. I've taken Spanish 7th & 8th grade and also sophomore and junior year of high school but it's really repetitive which only was needed since after all of that i still know less than the bare minimum. But I still really wanna learn especially since I live Texas and hear a lot which helps expose me to more but I'm still not learning (I've always had hard time learning with certain things). I've started listening and loving spanish music and when I tell ppl I listen to spanish music they look at me like i'm weird and crazy for liking something I don't understand immediately. Truthfully I've always listened to different cultures' music like Arab, Korean, and Indian but right now I'm primarily sticking to spanish to help me learn. People find that weird yet Gangnam Style by PSY was being played everywhere in America when it came out but ppl didn't find that weird. Sometimes I hate being American, America kinda sucks.

You shouldn't be shocked. For all we know, even if he's not Latino and has no Hispanic ancestry, he might've chosen to learn Spanish in high school, college, in the military, or for a civilian job. Or, he might indeed be straight-up part or fully Latino. Spanish is not just a language, and being Hispanic is not so much a race but a culture (food, art, music, etc). I'm a white guy of western & eastern Euro descent, but there are Spaniards, Portuguese, other Latinos and those with Latin ancestry who are paler than I am. Cameron Diaz and Melissa Villasenor (SNL) are a good celeb examples, and I used to work with a guy who is first-gen Spanish-American, but is a Bruce Willis look-alike. 😄

Actually Spanish is often easier to learn than English. Spanish like so many other languages has structure and consistency. We dont understand how hard it is for people who have another first language to read and learn English. We need to we helpful. Absolutely learning any other language is hard. (But the lack of normal structure and grammatical consistency make English so tough to learn if it's not your first language. We can be more compassionate about it.

I actually kind of agree with Tracy in a way. I'm a world traveler and every time I go to a different country, I either try to learn a few words or use Google Translate because expecting people to speak my language is silly. This couple knows that most people in America don't speak Spanish. For them to not even try to be a little bit accommodating is rude on their part.

It is so cringe when people say things to the effect "you come to this country, you should know the language." Why travel anywhere with small-minded humans like that? I've eaten at so many restaurants around the world and prior to arriving yeah I make an effort to learn some useful phrases, but if it is to a country where I absolutely cannot speak the language I am greatful for google translate and humans with compassion. Que haria yo? I would help, without a second thought. I was so thrilled in Netherlands to find that my Google Translate camera could be held directly over a menu and translate. Amazing!
