Not having seen the entire piece, it's a different take on the ending - I call it "dreamy" but the tempo works just fine. Much better than say, a certain conductor who tries to finish the entire overture in 14 minutes (Thielmann?).

ive heard so many performances ( recorded and live) of this overture that I can't even count them. So here's my current 'best performances' list; a) Chicago Symphony, Daniel Barenboim. b) Berlin Staatskapelle, Daniel Barenboim. (2002) c) Chicago Symphony, George Solti. So you go either Chicago Symphony and/or Daniel Barenboim for the best.

Spotty, you are entitled to your opinion. Similar sentiments were expressed of Bernstein for many years. Nonetheless, he is universally recognized as possibly the greatest conductor and music director of the 20th century. Andris is considered one of the greatest in the current century - and that's not just me saying so, but 100+musicians of the BSO and many other orchestras of the world today. Flabby, careless, messy? I couldn't agree less.

Bernstein is NOT 'universally' recognized as the best. Americans typically confuse the best in the US with the best in the world. The most recognized conductor around the world is by far Karajan. You just havent been around too much.

David Demers No, I agree with the guy above, universally he is not considered among the best. Karajan, Toscanini, Fürtwangler, Bohm; those are the best we had last century. No hate on Bernie since he did the best he could and was a great musician, but in terms of conducting he is surpassed.

Hmm the (guest) conductor is going NUTS at the finale but the orchestra doesn't really respond does it...they're playing the way they think it should be played, which makes it work. I do agree with the general consensus that this interpretation is definitely a tad too slow, almost comes off as a bit lethargic in all honesty...

  • @srothbardt

Of course they're blase'. They could play this in their sleep, and he's a guest, not their music director. Listen to his Debussy La Mer and Shos. 6th Sym. They both work better. Maybe Wagner isn't his strong suit. It's hard to say in such a young conductor. We'll see what happens when he takes over in Boston in the fall (14).
