When you let the rod sit, how do you know when you got a bite? Is the bail open or drag super loose? Rarely fish live bait so trying to get some advice

I keep my drag tight and the bail closed and watch carefully for a bite or use bells

What gate access point did you fish from? I’m trying to take my kids there and need to find a better spot

that spot is not at any of the gates, you have to follow some paths behind the high school field. A good spot to try for them could be scar hill, it's a very short walk, plenty of parking, and people do pretty well there.

For lake Trout the best time to catch them is April-May, and September-November. We have success using Kastmaster spoons either 3/4 or 1 ounce. It's also effective to use live shiners and fish them on the bottom. Can't remember exact name of the gate, but using those methods you can have luck in most spots.
