January 28, 1939 - the passing of a great poet. James Joyce sent flowers, albeit late, and called Yeats "the golden mouth" in one of his own poems. Yeats had tried to coral Joyce into the Irish Literary Movement, but Jimmie was a free spirit, who found his own voice in exile, looking backward to that tormented, mystical place of Erin. Rest in peace, Mr. Yeats. We have not lost memory of your poetic words. Thank you. Pat Durkin - Chicago

It should go like this: "What immortal hand or eye Let the Irish vessel lie Emptied of its poetry In its fearful symmetry?"

And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O LORD, bless this Thy hand grenade that with it Thou mayest blow Thine enemies to tiny bits, in Thy mercy." And the LORD did grin and the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats and large... Auden...did you have to have such a silly voice?

That is all there is to it. Parts II and III were never recorded by the man himself.

@GeraldMcBoingDoing Right... I assume a recording exists, since there's one of the first section? Earth receive an honoured guest... I do like Auden's own readings: he interprets the phrasing as real speech, rather than the pretentious singsong "I am Reading Poetry" tone that so many would-be reciters seems to affect...

When Auden revised the poem he cut out some of the best verses --about Kipling and Claudel for I think political not aesthetic reasons so you are quite right.

I agree - that accent is awful. And his rendition is so pedestrian.
