Excellent show.........I thought the 2006 VZ SS fitted with the 6.0 litre gen4 should have rated a mention. Only produced between January 06 and mid 06 before the VE released. Superior engine to drive than the gen 3 and very few sold.... I stand to be corrected but believe only 28 executives with this engine and similar numbers in Berlina and Calais. SS models were somewhere in the 600 produced range with only 150 in manual. Considering the low production numbers and desirability of the 6.0 litre I think this model will be a future desirable / collectable model for this reason. It’s already getting hard to find an unmolested example and the prices are holding up against the 5.7 versions.

I owned a 6L Statesman International, really wish I'd kept it instead of selling it. Head gasket went and when I got a list of recommended of all the other repairs that it needed which was almost 3 pages long, I ended up selling it for $4,000 back in 2018. Oh, if I could turn back time 😅😅

Great to see the Adventra get some love in amongst this excellent video. Completely correct in that they were an amazingly good car and wonderfully versatile, but woefully marketed by a team that really didn't know how to push the strengths of the All-paw wagons

@@lucastopham4234 Not really. It was a better vehicle in everything it set out to do, except look like a 4x4. The Territory's commercial success has been attributed to the fact that it was tall and looked bulky, but came as a cheap 2WD only model, whereas the Adventra looked more like the Commodore wagon, but came only as the AWD model. The Territory is more like a reliable Captiva, whereas the Adventra is a more capable soft off-roader

@@jimpraxis3878 territory would easily be better off road than a adventura there a ligit SUV with AWD and that's not to say the adventura is a bad car infact I would not mind a lx8 one myself I just think the territory out did it in most ways and that's why we saw territory to the end but adventura only lasted 3-4 they even out did them performance wise with the turbo territory

Excellent Episode Gents. I have owned 2 VZs. An SV6 5spd auto and the final 6ltr SS manual. I am with Shannons because of the SS! The issue with the alloytec (which wasn't covered) was with long-term reliability which continued on through until at least 2010 with VE. The issues included timing chain stretch -- which is a AUD$3000+ replacement and typically occurred outside of warranty. They had a knack for ignition coils (coil on plug design) dying unexpectedly. When I bought my VZ SV6 I started wishing I bought the Ecotec VY instead, as the old pushrod motor that journos loved to criticise, was far more reliable. In the end I traded up and got the SS. The best car I have ever owned and the more reliable.

I have an vz alloytec, high km but regular 5k servicing with mobil 1 5w30. No chain rattle and valve covers have been off and hardly any varnish. Timing cover leaks a bit tho so I check oil level regularly. LE0 motor. Chains were definitely an issue in VE tho.

@@cumminsfj4586vz alloy tec wagon, ecu retuned with hp tuners soft ware, fitted a throttle body controller, freer flowing exhaust k&n filter, timing chain done at 280k, regular services, new suspension bushes & shocks, after I did the ecu tune the car made 210 kw at the flywheel and is a totally different car. With throttle controller set to level 10, traction is an issue ! In the family fleet, ( cars I service mechanic for ) We have a tv v6 series2, vy V6, vy v8 ( currently engine out for a fresh ion up/ power up) and a vf 3ltr 6speed auto that just hit 200k and now requires trans valve body service. As for reliability , the Vt, vy v6 and now the vy ls1 all with around 250k klm travel have had blown head gaskets, ls1 is currently under repair , all the rubber seals in the ls1 where hard squashed and leaking in clouding the intake manifold, yet that car has has an easy life, the two Buick v6 are just family runabouts, after head gaskets both run like a dream. As for the vz, timing chains at 280k, and worn suspension bushes ( replaced). This car has had a bit of a hard life, done lots of towing, yet oil pressure is as per factor spec as is cylinder compression, recent gear box service and valve body clean, using HP tuners I was able to retune ecu, free up some more power to suit the new exhaust and freeway driving get 8.5 litres per 100 klm, around town 10-11. The 3 ltr 6 speed auto vf, at 204k klms now having gear box issues, now requiring a valve body service and clean. Other than timing chains , it now 298k. Still going strong, with the retune and throttle controller, it’s a rocket!

As a engine reconditioner, engine tuner, Holden hobbled the quad cam alloy tec v6, not to mention a bad pcv system that clogged up, caused the engine to sludge up, this led to timing chain issues. A lot of the performance issue is due to Holden programming the ecu and the electronic throttle. Holden used this electronic throttle to hobble the car. Fit an after market throttle controller set it to level 10, you want be complaining about poor performance, as you will struggle for grip and may get some speeding tickets. As for the pcv valve , it’s an easy fix just requiring drilling larger holes in the pcv valve. Using hp tuners to re tune the ecu, my car is now a very different car to what once was. I am very happy with it, we have a Vt series 2, a vy v6 series 2, vy v8 cal, we had a ve ( lots of electrical issues). Lastly we have a 3ltr vf series 2, I can tell you other than the vy v8 the vz retuned with throttle controller, leaves the 3 litre 6 speed vf and the two Buick v6’s in its wake. And retuned it deliver 8.5 ltrs per 100 klm on the freeway. Timing chains lasted to 280k, new chains fitted, oil pressure and compression is still in spec, the car now has 298k , new bush and shocks and regular services, it drive almost as good as the 2017 vf. Again I am happy with my allotted vz v6 wagon.

The problem was most alloytecs were the low feature/low power version mated to the old 4 speed auto. Pointless having a high revving engine matched to that transmission. The alloytec was a US designed engine. Used in a huge number of US models. The highest powered version used in the Camaro.

Great show that talks sense. The VY is a great car with the Ecotec V6 & my VY Maloo R8 was a weapon & the VZ is even better, especially in the Lumina Wagon configuration. Some don't like the Alloytec V6 quad cam, probably because of the timing chain setup, but if the right oil is used, upwards of 250,000 kms. can be achieved. Like others here, I think Holden went backwards after the VZ.

There was one fact that was not true by saying the vy was the first model to offer a low budget v8 option. This is far from true as the commodore executive was offered with a v8 option untill the vy so the vx was the last model with the v8 option executive. How do i know i have one with the 6 speed manual and this old girl to this day just laughs at the vy and vz hsv models down the quarter mile always made me smile when id reel them in through the big end
