VY Commodore Headliner removal and replacement of fabric

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

It is not possible to re-glue the old headliner to the liner substrate. Replacement of the fabric is the only option. The fabric is easily available online.
Do not use standard contact glue as it may not stick well enough in the heat. I used two cans. There are plenty of other tutorials about it re-gluing the headliner, I was focusing on the removal of the headliner in this particular car.

There are two sections for the VY commodore wagon. Also the glue shrinks, so for those doing this, apply the glue once, let it set for around 5 mins and spray another coat on top again. This will reduce the shrinkage and ideally use a paint-roller to stretch the fabric over the support panel. Good job never the less guys. ps: wear goggles or something to protect your eyes from the old glue. One grain of that stuff in your eye and it's like hell on earth!

good job bro, why can't I glue my original liner back on ?

  • @scottydscottyd

Thanks. The reason is that the backing is foam and that foam is breaking down, basically disintegrating, there is no way glue will stick to it. You will find it easy to find replacement material online. Not sure if you are in NZ but I used www.webbing.co.nz/auto-marine/79-headlining.html Cost $50.

I believe it is the sponge backing that turns brown and sticky. You have to replace the material and clean all the gunk of the cardboard backing really well.
