VW Up GTI review - new pocket rocket evokes the original Golf GTI

Well priced, well made and well equipped for the money, the up! GTi is good to drive in most respects without re-writing any headlines dynamically. The engine is the strong point, the brakes and chassis less so. But as an alternative to the similarly priced Twingo GT it’s in a league of one, even if it’s not as much fun - or as fast - as the more expensive Fiat 500 Abarth.

Just collected mine today, without a test drive.. Was keen on the abarth 595, but preferred the build of the Up. Feels just as quick and handles beautifully, feels much more planted than the abarth. Seems a lot faster than the figures would suggest!

Andrew Brookes I agree, I drove the Abarth 595 and didn’t like how it handled. I was coming from a Twingo RS133 which handled like it was on rails and felt much faster than its figures suggested. That in mind I ordered an Up GTI, I knew it would drive and handle well and I knew it would feel fast. Before anybody starts I’ve owned MUCH faster cars, had a hugely modded GT4 that was incredibly fast, but the Up GTI, like the now defunct Twingo RS, is great fun to drive.

well it's not a bad "hot hatch" considering that its power , 113HP, looks enough to move the little car but unfortunately if we look back in time and we see the Renault Clio 182 Cup we can't help to feel a bit of disappointment . One thing I would change is those 17" wheel too expensive rubber so I would probably stick to 16"

The mark 1 GTI was an expensive car. It was 60% more than the standard Golf and nearly as much as a Datsun 240Z/260Z. It rusted badly and had very little equipment, poor brakes and used the driver and front passenger as part of its crumple zone. Hence it’s lightness. The fact that this cheap car gets any where near it, is a testament to modern cars and this little car in particular

Agree. I think people look at the original GTI with rose tinted glasses. They rolled, were no quicker, less refined & scary brakes. Cars have come a long way since. Wife has an Up "White" - brilliant wee car & hope to upgrade to the GTI some time.

There are many things to like about this car… the speedo for instance 60mph at the top 0 & 140mph at either end of the scale… what am I wittering on about I hear you saying? Until recently I had a Vauxhall/Opel Astra which had a 185mph speedo so all the usable range was compressed into the first 3rd of its total range making it harder to scan for a quick reference and really having over 100mph of itself that you’d never use legally. So, in some ways this car is a bit of a design classic, partly that’s the strength of ideas in the original up! but the Gti brings its own things to the party as well and adds to it all not massively but enough. The speedo is central to an annoyance also though as if you set the steering wheel at your most comfortable setting height wise (there is no reach adjustment) then you can’t see the top portion meaning you have to drive around with the digital OBC speed displayed all the time or stoop to read it the traditional way from the analog gauge. Design classic and design fail all in one… OOPS!

Bigzeeyhyh: Funny how that car pops up again and again. I owned a 100hp 11ish years ago - best small fiat for a long time and a quality car from them, the ride drove me mad and I loved and hated it in equal measure. More recently I tried an Abarth 595 Turismo, I’d wanted one for so long mainly for the badge, it turned out that’s all it was, ride was again awful like nothing had changed since the 100hp and actually the leather seats made the ride harder still. The quality was just the same as the Panda from 11 years ago. I think that’s why the 100hp is so sought after, it’s as fun as an Abarth but it’s cheaper and holds its value. I saw all the vids on the up! Gti and was somewhat sceptical, eventually got around to trying one and loved it. First tintop I’ve enjoyed driving in ages. So I bought one. Compared to the Abarth it’s like VW got rid of all the sharp edges, so that means it rides better, the interior is softer, doesn’t rattle and is made of better materials (the 500 has the same materials as a car from 2008) but the up! doesn’t have the edge on performance…not a problem for me, to use the 3 bears analogy it’s not too hot, not too cold, it’s just right. So in the end I could have bought another Panda (seriously considered doing that) and spent some time doing all the mods on the suspension to take a bit of the sting out of it, soundproof it, upgrade it to do CarPlay etc or buy something already sorted and I did. More expensive but fun for today. It’s such a shame that all of these cars will disappear as little cars all go electric, there will be no VW up! Gti when the up! (or whatever replaces it) goes fully electric next year or the year after, Fiat has said there is no place for Abarth with the new 500 as that goes electric. So sad.

  • @peterlewis3540

It will be a very rare sight on Uk roads, especially now VW has closed all its order books for the car, to make way for the release of its Up Electric in 2020. The Up Gti and High Up Tsi models have been discontinued, so owners of the Gti will be in possession of one very rare vehicle. On last count, there were 675 registered Gtis in 2018, and far less for 2019.
