    Great job and well done. Just watching your video and remembering the horrors of fitting a new turbo on my Galaxy.I knew it was on its last legs due to oil residue and general fumes before it failed completely. Now have an elderly T5 in same condition -oil clogging up EGR so must be brave and take on challenge again . Mine is a BPC engine which always does 30mpg no more no less and after watching your engine change video, I may now change the vehicle!

    i had not one but 3 studs snap off in my cylinder head ,, major PITA .. managed to make aluminium blocks bolted to other manifold studs to line up a drill in the centre of the broken manifold stud and then a quality "easy out" did the rest .. I would also say never try and use the old turbo gasket ,the`yre only a couple of quid from TPS and they will empty your sump of oil very quickly . Good vid

    You will absolutely need the VAS 3410 triple spline socket ( or copy ) to do this job. There is one triple square bolt that even my name brand "long" triple spline set would not reach, you need this specific length one to complete the job in my opinion. The gaskets are crap, even a new one is likely to leak, just done mine and at 300kms it's leaking, crush gaskets are very easy to ruin on install, I think I'll make a custom one to fix this leak. Also don't even try and do this without removing the rear engine mount, far easier if you do so!

    holly Molly you removed Even the engine rubber mount.... I remember last time I got into trouble with working space I just uncrewd the whole engine structure and it gave me the extra inches I needed. I wonder if that would work for doing the turbo

  • @DanSohan

    @DanSohan

    You could remove the engine sub frame, bit that would he 3 or 4 times the work of removing the rear mount.. The rear mount has to come out as it's the only way i could see of bring the turbo out.

    Had the same problem on a 2.5 t5 after fitting a recon turbo leaking oil at that gasket removed turbo again changed gasket again with genuine one , turbo back on and was still leaking what a bummer, so removed again had a good look at turbo and gasket , we then copped that the gasket wasn't just sitting perfect over the turbo oil feed hole ,as a closer look and unfortunately we didn't have the old turbo to compare we reconded it was a fault with manafacture of the cast of the turbo so returned turbo and got a replacement unit rechecked gasket fitment on new turbo and looked a lot better. Refitted and All ok no leak . So u just never no.

    Hi. I have a T5 2.5. had a small oil leak at the gasket block but the turbo was fine. 80k. Removed turbo to put £7 gasket on and fitted a recon turbo. Ran like a bag of shite! Having to put the old turbo back on because I kept it. I don't trust recon turbos! What a nightmare that this gasket fails!

    okay, I'm just about to start down this track, considering that the van I'm working on looks like it's been like this for a while :) .. hopefully I'm able to get it all done, which is going to be by the looks of it .. a rather adventurous event .. I've just managed to get to the glow plugs which I couldn't get to work at all out of the car :D so they'll need replacing too .. just hope that nothing else has gone astray with it, as I'm going to be compression testing it just to find out how far in I have to go .. but I have to agree with the comment in the middle about having a light under the bonnet .. it takes forever to do anything on these vans .. after working on one, I'd not want to own one.

    Now i know WHY the Transporter I bought was so cheap.......it needs a new turbo, ive done this on cars but this looks a right bugger! I reckon a garage will do the ‘big intake of breath’ thing and quote me more than the van is worth to change the blower!😡Ive had to bite the bullet and take the turbo off as Ive discovered my VNT is glued SOLID! I SOAKED my manifold bolts for a week in PLUS GAS and they all flew out EXCEPT the one right above the turbo you cant get ANYTHING on it to crack it. I want to get my turbo out of the top WITHOUT all that malarky ripping half the underside apart.

    what was reason your turbo failed?old age.was the oil feed pipe to turbo ok.my oil was low when checked under the minimum so perhaps turbo was damaged due to low oil.i topped up but maybe too late.didnt realise was using that much oil after having oil seals fixed when the cambelt was done.

    I have had a new turbo 3 years and 20 thou miles and it started leaking year and a bit ago garage said I need new turbo I don’t believe them as it works fine just leaks oil. I recon it’s this gasket problem and they are too embarrassed to admit they used inferior parts any thoughts anyone cos turbo don’t leak unless u got blow by blocked drain or it’s old and worn

  • @DanSohan

    @DanSohan

    3 жыл бұрын

    My experience is they all push a small amount of oil when worn in. However there's lots of other places oil can come from that will accumulate in the boost pipes, turbo or intercooler. How do you know its 100% turbo. Are you noticeably losing oil?

  • @DanSohan

    All depends on where the oil leak is. If its losing oil outside the engine (not blowing smoke) and its coming from the back of the engine, it is likely the block to turbo gasket. The turbo job on this van is difficult compared to many, so the garage will be resistant to removing it again. IT will be like hundreds of dollars labour to get to a $20 gasket :( - good luck with it

    I may have found leak need to test drive I have run and reved engine no leak at this time. I recon it was the sump directly above drive shaft wind blows it onto shaft spinning up to turbo area then looks like it’s dripping from waste gate crossing fingers just tweak Ed the bolts no weeping oil now god I hope that was it. There was a lot of oil on the boost pipe elbow going into inter cooler will replace as I suspect alloys worn vans done 205 thau miles. Will report back tomorrow after school run Thanks all 👍👍👍

  • @DanSohan

    @DanSohan

    had the sump off ours as it was leaking, hopefully snubbing the bolts up will help. I always have some oil seeping out the boost pipes, even after engine replacement, but not enough to notice the oil dropping. keep an eye on them. I did try replacing o-rings on the boost pipes but think the metal lugs wear out from normal engine vibrations.
