Just finished replacing everything on the coolant side of the engine. Turned out to be leaking a tiny amount of compression between No1 cylinder and water jacket. Gasket wasn't blown but corrosion made it weak enough to create a gap for it to leak. Excellent videos Dan.

Mate your doing an awesome job , not only of the van but your vids are inspirational for me. You are enabling me ( with minimal mechanical experience) to save so much and do my own van. Love seeing the exact things your doing and teeling us what tools you use has saved me so much money than buying stuff I don’t need in kits. Stay true you legend and thanks again, you are appreciated 💪🏻🤟🏻

There's a guy on KZread called the savage garage, had the same dilemma on a petrol mini, wasn't sure if the gasket had gone, he pressurised the cooling system with a hand pump then looked into the cylinder with an endoscope, and you could see a tiny drip of coolant falling on the piston. Then he knew for sure the head gasket had gone.

Hi Dan, I had this issue on my 1.9pd Passat, the head gasket was leaking past the fire rings into the water jacket on three of the four cylinders with no sign of mayo in the oil, but water level in the header tank going down. Head gasket and head skim cured the problem. I have since heard that it happens because the aluminium head casting goes soft. My mechanic who did the job for me said that you could see where the fire rings had pushed into the aluminium. Good luck.

Hi Dan. I’ve a related question. I’ve been losing litres upon litres of coolant from somewhere. My heater matrix is blocked so have now bypassed it. I’ve also changed the cap and still losing it. It’s been pressure tested and no leaks. No oil in the water either. Under load the temp goes up, but also quickly goes back down when coasting along. I’m not sure if it’s head gasket or not due to the amount of water I’m losing

Did you find out what the problem was??? Was it the EGR cooler??? I have done loads of them that pressurises the water system. Also water pumps on these are notorious for breaking because the propellers are made of plastic and fail to pump water around the system, it's seems to be a VW thing. Saying all this I have the same problem on the same vehicle at the moment, I changed the EGR cooler six months ago because it was pressurising the cooling system and leaving black soot on top of the water and it cured the problem. Now six months later it is pressurising again but no black soot this time but bottom rad hose is cold and top hose is hot, so I have changed the thermostat and no change. I have checked the water pump and change it along with the timing belt because it needed doing anyway but the water pump wasn't failing so the next stage is the radiator like you are doing. Did this cure the problem???

@@DanChambersDAC hi! Was the radiator actually blocked? Because I have just finally fitted a new radiator in the one I am doing, also change the water pump at the same time because cambelt was due anyway but I seem to have the same problem I started with I think. (I am running it up right now and it is up to temperature so the brand new stat should be open by now) but the top hose and top of the rad is hot and bottom hose is cold but I cant see how a head gasket would cause that. Any ideas???

In my opinion the last part where exhaust gassen and coolant could mix is the EGR cooler. This could cause the expansion tank to color to black, doubt it will pressurise the coolant system, but will cause coolant loose. My best gues will be the head gasket.
