VW T4 Camper Van Build 10 | Making our van quiet like a car - cab sound deadening & insulation

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video, I show how we transformed our van to sound like a Golf inside!
Seriously though, in the previous video I showed how we added additional sound deadening to the front doors, sliding doors, side panels and rear barn doors.
The difference in road noise was significant!
In this video we take things even further in our quest to reduce road noise as much as possible in our VW T4 Transporter campervan, by stripping out the front seats, lower dash center console and rubber floor mat, so that we could install even more sound deadening and even more insulation.
Now we literally feel like we are driving around in a normal car instead of being killed by incessant road noise that is characteristic of cargo delivery vans.
Hope you enjoy this video and get inspired to do this upgrade on your camper van build with sound deadening so you too can travel in car-like comfort.

Will be doing this to my LT35(once I get it finally fixed) it’s non air con etc so any heat in the summer is not a nice thing. Drove down to Marbella to collect my things when I moved back to the U.K. 43 deg C passing Cordoba etc. additionally the previous owner had removed the viscous fan( a fairly common mod in Northern Europe) so engine cooling was assisted by….. having the heater on and windows down. If you are a masochist it’s highly recommended… Also the roof in the rear will be getting the insulation treatment as it creates terrible condensation in the winter …

Oh man! I feel that pain - which is why I just had to fit aircon.

That's a great option - even for some of our less expensive cars. Great job and well done.

I wonder, if you only put the insulation on the floor, if it would be sufficient.

It'll help prevent heat soak from the engine and exhaust, as well as from the road surface. If you're driving over baking hot tarmac for hundreds of miles, preventing that heat radiating into the cab has got to be a good thing. The cab is definitely cooler and much quieter since we did this.

@@AdventuresAutomobiles I meant what would happen if you skip the sound deadening heavy stuff as it is mostly made to reduce the resonance in big panels. I own a T4 1.9td and they have horrible road noise. No doubt insulating the cabin is a good choice when you remove the panel to the back.

Adding the 10mm closed cell adhesive insulation between the floor and rubber mat will definitely help too.

@@AdventuresAutomobiles Right, I'm not criticizing your approach whatsoever. I'm just thinking out loud in the comment section. The sound deadening stuff is super expensive and heavy and I'm trying to avoid it. The structure of this closed cell insulation from a physics perspective should act very good as a sound insulation too. (As the soundwave needs to change medium every half a mm and thus slow down, it is a very non homogeneous environment)

I think the van will be long dead by then, so I'm happy with the decision to sound deaden - it's made such an enormous difference to the comfort of the van for now.

Hi James, the insulation foam cost about £40 and the sound deadening about £50 a roll.
