Adding the extra equipment to a standard R would make it more expensive than a new R20. My wife has covered 3,000 miles in her R20 and absolutely loves it. We’ve had 2 MK8 R’s and I can say from experience that the R20 feels far better when pushed hard as there is less turbo lag and the DSG gearbox feels much sharper.

333 hp up from the stock 320 hp 😂 a simple stage 2 golf r with just breather mods and a tune will reliably put out 450hp. they should've dropped the 2.5T rs3 engine in it and made it an exclusive run limited to 250 models and called the R25. everyone would love that and it would get a lot of attention on youtube and the tuning scene.

Just choose another factory color if you are not happy with the blue accents? You can always opt for lapiz blue and black trim and full black with black trim.

True but the yaris looses against the golf in every category besides maybe sound (unless you fit the Golf with the akrapovic). They are really not anymore comparable at this point cuz the Golf R is another league.

@@harryblack8686 do the maths and you’ll quickly understand why. If VW buy them for £3 and sell 300,000 golfs a year that is £900k…. Not to mention the development cost and everything else involved. They probably employ an engineer on £50k just to manage the supplier and move decimal points around on a drawing.

Spend 200 on a more aggressive alignment, 500 on a tune, there's your regular R beating this by miles. God I hate manufacturers launching "The new super ultra mega hyper version" of a car with +10bhp and slightly more camber/toe making it the "special hardcore version". Every. Single. Time. Won't even mention the color changes and wheels. Pardon me, lunch is about to visit my toncils for the second time today. (Great review though Alex! Now get back to the NC Miata :D )

@@RandomGuy-ej9gr you think spending a grand on a old beat down r will be better than this? If anyone know anything about golfs you could safely assume there's a going to be some decent upgrades. Most likely a slightly different turbo, maybe some ironed out bugs in the engine, since the tcr has full aluminium bits it wouldn't surprise me if this was the case aswell along with a few styling features, mvh improvements and not to mention the vin in 15 years time.

Seriously. I have an ‘04 GTI 24v VR6 that sounds 100x better than this, and the R32’s sound 500x better.

Fk the rs3 I could get a used current gen M5C if I wanted to, or a fkn used RS6 for that ungodly price, or even an E63S AMG for that flipping hell. In fact, save up 2 more years, add £20k to the price tag, and Id have a McLaren or a Gallardo. Car manufacturers need a right kick up the ass from the public, but unfortunately there are too many half brains drooling over every new shiny overpriced tin can, which only encourages them to hike up prices even more. It's becoming a right joke it is.

Good luck finding an RS3, even a used one with less than 20k miles is much more expensive than the NEW Golf 8R 20. Stop making unrealistic comparisons and interchange categories that cannot be compared, the RS3 is just on another price point than the Golf R, period.

U can find a shit ton of '20 and '19 RS3s well under 20k miles for MUCH less than this golf variant 😂😂 I'm talking like upwards of £10k less than this golf's MSRP. In fact there's 4 whole 2022 RS3s on sale, with 3k,5k,7k, and 8.8k miles respectively, ALL UNDER £55k, which is only £6k more than this golf. And none of those NEW RS3s have been written off, or damaged in any way. Just accept that the golf in general has been overpriced for years now.

@@butchmeister80 The screen can lag, be filled with unnecessary menus and stuff for something as simple as Turning ESC off, and if it breaks you lose all your buttons, just one, screens are great yes, so are infotainment units, but it sucks to have all the car controls on a laggy fragile screen that looks like it belongs on a Nissan Micra

RS3 is over-protected, VW never get its engine on any other Hot Hatch. Only is installed on the Formentor, with 10HP less and... It's not a HH.

Had one of these Golf R-Lines, must say it was a nice car to drive, but I bet this is a different gravy, but for the price tho, would you really buy this compare to other 50k cars out there?

For that price, the akrapovic exhaust should be standard

So they gave the R32 a big ol VR6 up front and gave the R20 13 more hp and blue wheels.. nice.

I do like the car, I personally own a Golf R MK 7.5 but I usually wait for the price to go down from 40-50k to around 25k then I buy one. 333bhp kind of meh though for a stock anniversary edition car. I have 495bhp in my golf R right now and I'm happy with it but no way I'm paying 50k for a car.

It is not almost the R, FWD is in no world comparable to AWD regardless of your claims and tune. If you are beyond 300 HP you NEED AWD or else you just have never seen the real difference for yourself.

just get the regular Golf R with a 6 speed manual. insane fun to drive.

I’ll stick with my 7.5R 3-door manual thanks. Old school hot hatch fun.

Yeah and the BMW will loose its value much much quicker.

I was put off instantly when you lifted the bonnet and couldn't take your hand off the bonnet because it doesn't have gas struts to hold it open. It's little bits like that for me that a 50k car just need to have.

Good to have Alex back, always a fun presenter with sound saving advice this time too! Yeah the blue hints, makes one not want or lust after it. A very lazy anniversary model.

Could have an A45s for that money with an extra 100hp and a cleverer diff.

I had a 1.5 Golf hire car recently and really like how it drove. I bet this one is even more fabulous! Perhaps a bit pricey, but I'm just thankful VW are still making cool and fun cars for petrol heads.

An ECU remap on a regular R would be a tenth of the price with 50 more horses

Happy to be corrected but I thought the Clubsport S was the fastest production Golf produced? Maybe I’m biased as I have one 😉!

I would rather have the standard 8R and spend the difference on options.

Add DCC, winter pack, pan roof, HUD, some rear airbags (which really should be standard), park assist, rear camera, HK audio and you're up to £56k

For me those blue accents don't work well with the exterior but they're great for the interior. And for such a price, the lack of gas struts for a bonnet is such a turn off

Performance pack is 2300 quid on the standard r, so is 2700 extra worth it for the extra details of 20 years badge, 13 bhp, tighter suspension and more response from the engine? Time will tell

Don't forget the leather seats....

It is already almost in production for a year, the R20 Model will soon disappear the reviewer kind of spread wrong info saying "it will only be sold for a year" when in fact it is the last 3-4 months left of the 1 year period it is beeing sold in. To speak facts, if you want one then get it now or live forever with the fact that you missed out.

Same horsepower as my forester 333hp Nioce!!

People complaining it isn't worth the extra or that it's underpowered. These will hold their money and be more of a collectors item in the future

The power increase doesn’t even come close to the A45 or the GLA45 at 381hp. If you go for the latest S variant you’re well over the 400hp (420 I believe?) power output. You’ve not convinced me…

AMG prolly overtuned the engies from factory which is basicly just stage 1 from factory but a heavy software tune always goes to cost of the longevity of your motor. A subtle increase like with the Golf R is way better for longevity. Sure 13 HP is tiny i also think they couldhave gone to 340 or 350 total HP with it but meh, where are you gonna use it anyways? Also consider the antilag feature which is only programmed into the R20 instead the regular which probably makes the most difference here.

It's the exclusivity that you are truly paying for. 5 grand for a vehicle that's only being built for 1 yr isn't a bad investment in my opinion.

Tyres, fuel .... and a stage 1 tune... Still quids in with original Golf R

A golf r that would be worth 50k would be one with the rs3 motor and Trans in it delete the light bar throw some club sport style sears and go back to an updated version of the mk7.5 interior.

Nice car - the only issue is the blue wheels and blue mirrors - looks too aftermarket. What the heck VW ?

50 gs😮 i think its only worth it collectorwise as a second hand buy few years from now .....who ever buys it 1st isnt making a penny. Also they shudda made it 2.20 ltrs (20yrs) and gave it way more power.
