The GTE is at a massive disadvantage. The battery is only a 3rd charged (the more charged it is the more power it can flow) and the GTE has todo it in 10°c colder climate, again, putting the GTE at a disadvantage as a cold battery is like doing the test with a cold engine) Taking that into consideration, I’d say the GTE wins a moral victory, and a fair contest would be far more interesting.

GeneralSprint I generally find Petrol engines work better in cooler conditions , the petrol gti would still win .

Mark C yes combustion engines prefer colder temperatures to a point as it means the air is more dense, and in the case of a turbo or super charged engine, the charge is much more dense allowing for more fuel to be injected. My point is this isn’t a fair comparison. Doing this test with the GTE with a half depleted battery is like giving the GTi cheap low Ron fuel. Ideally you need a GTi, GTD and a GTE all on the same runway, same conditions to get a meaningful result, and that I think would be very interesting. The GTi would probably still edge it, but ONLY just. (its wildly believed VW are under quoting the GTE’s performance figures)

GeneralSprint The GTE isn’t Slow you must bear in mind through it has More bhp than the gtd and Similar torque but the Gti mk7 has even more bhp than them both but I think it has a whisker Less torque than a Gte or gtd, but They also weigh more than a gti , it is really interesting yet dispite being a bit on the plump side it does go well , my friend has a Stock 2006 ST Focus it’s a bit on the sore side of things perhaps needs a few quid spent on it Servicing but we had a go with a 16plate, We see it approaching weaving around lanes on a motorway he then tried an Undertake on my mate who weren’t having it , Gte Eventually used a very aggressive and dirty under cut on the guy infront Who moved over my mate went hunting for it , at first instance it had not enough balls , he slowed down We could see GTe was fiddling around inside , it then took off, at first my mate was reeling it in but he had to lift off. That one lift off meant he could no longer have enough power to overtake the GTE so we Stayed right up its arse up to 130- from around 70, after 130 it began to run out of steam we cruised by around 140+ But it really surprised us both we thought it’d go down like a sack of spuds . However I’ve yet to see what it can offer against my MK3 Focus ST. I find with mine though it can do a couple of fast runs but the Turbo temp goes up very quickly and It Feels Slow after that. I must likely need a Larger intercooler but it’s fast enough for 90% of the time .

Mark C I know it’s not slow, I own one ;) I know from speaking to other owners that they produce more power that VW claim, having put them on a dyno. They reportedly produced between 230 and 240, although I can’t prove this. Also, bear In mind that while official “peak” power might be less than the GTi, what people fail to understand about performance hybrids is that they are on the power from 0 RPM. The second you touch the throttle you have 330Nm of torque and 101Bhp, and once the petrol engine kicks in and gets into its stride, although the motors power is starting to taper off, the petrol engine peaks, meaning that your still making 350Nm of torque, 150Bhp from the engine and about 50bhp from the motor (that’s based on VWs reported figures.) What is often not understood is that your “peak” power is less important than your power across the Rev range. A car that produces 300bhp, but ONLY between 4650rpm and 4660rpm, and produces less than 100bhp at any other Rev speed is not going to be as fast or enjoyable to drive by a car that produces 204Bhp from 0rpm till 4000rpm. The current means for measuring power doesn’t do hybrids justice as it only measures that peak. As I say, the ONLY way to get a meaningful result, is with a proper side by side comparison. Now I’m not saying then GTE will win, as it’s also got to lug 120Kg of battery pack around, but god I think it could be close ;)

GeneralSprint 😏Perhaps Like I say it gave my Mates 2006 2.5T Focus st flatout run upto 130mph from about 70mph. It weren’t until around 140 we came down the side and was like walking speed away . The Focus was nearly all out of puff at 140 it’s at the end of its torque band in sixth gear & just pulling on what’s left of the Bhp . We were both shocked we’d never seen a GTE before we thought perhaps a little shitty Nissan Leaf Jobbie But Only Made by VW we got a shock . It’s interesting how they work Usually the Electric Motor cuts out once the car is upto around 30mph like a Toyota Prius . However I see a couple of down sides When will it need a new battery ? And how much do you need to factor that in if buying used, also are there any implications on shortening the life of the battery by Being driven Hard and Discharging the battery quick? So it needs charging more regularly . The only upside is I guess you can at least drive on the 1.4 when the battery dies , Also Diesel gtd you have to consider dpf , injector failure. I guess you could argue something could go wrong with the petrol I heard the early tsi engines got cocked Up valves . Part of my Decision to go with the Focus Mk3 , But on a completely different note ! Build quality in the Focus is err?? Yes well it’s a ford 😏. And the VW build quality is err??? Yes well it’s German what else do you expect . Bomb proof

Image how good GTE would be if VW didn't put a 50% lock on the electric motor in GTE. In E-Mode the electric motor is 100% active and in GTE mode only 50%

Thanks for this video. The ungoing debate between my nephew and I is now settled. The question was whether the GTE did 0-100 in 7,6 seconds or 6,3 seconds. Now I know. Thanks.
