    oh man im so glad I found this video. Mate, you're an absolute legend, I can't believe that the dealership is so reluctant to even help with finding out what the issues are for my Dad's crafter and they have a big bloody song and dance when faced with having to troubleshoot...not to mention the charge! - exact same model as this one you've videod and even same year and motorhome build! She drops out of gear when stationary on an angle. Your explanation of the auto part of the gearbox completely explains the situation with that overflow drain. Doing the full service ourselves in 2 weeks time (FIFO life yay...) and this video's a bloody godsend! Any chance you'd be keen to fab up a new drain plug with magnet for us? or send us some specs? That's a brilliant idea. Absolutely awesome vid, thanks again much appreciated; will send beer money!

    Hello! Magnificent video. I write from Spain, I wish you were here. I have a similar problem but a little different from those already explained. My gearbox is the same but mounted on a 2003 MB Sprinter CDI 316 and the mechanics don't understand it. I recently requested a check and change of gearbox oils, a bad idea since it worked better before. Before, when starting in gear, sometimes, very rarely and perhaps due to a weak battery, it would not engage neutral and would not start. Although at least once, when pushing the vehicle, it somehow managed to unlock itself and was able to put it in gear and start with the same battery. Now after the oil and hydraulic change, sometimes the automatic mode is disconnected, changing to manual, it works perfectly in manual, changing gears manually and downshifting only when braking, but there is a loss of power in the engine. And when you stop the engine and turn off the ignition, when you start everything works well again in the gearbox and in the engine power, but after a few kilometers the automatic mode is disconnected again and the power drops. What would be your opinion? Bad oil replacement? Could it be a lot of hydraulics? Any reason for the power loss? The return to normal when turning off the engine seems electronic, but is the relationship between the gear change and the loss of power strange?

    Thank you so very much for the awesome video! I love how you show all the details! Now we know a little bit how this thing works. We just started the van after 4 months of not using it due to winter and oooops the gears don`t work. We noticed a spot of liquid under the gearbox but not very much. I suppose its hydraulic liquid because it's not very viscous and there's a tube going into the hydraulic part which ist wet at the lower part. It is the lower of two tubes on the drivers side of the gearbox. We hope very much that only this tube is damaged, perhaps by a marten. Now I just need to find out the correct description of the tube in order to being able to replace it and hopefully we can resolve at least this problem of the van. So many thanks from Germany!!!!

    Hi again, I just read one of the other comments and it is similar to this when "trying to select gear nothing happens but you can hears parts wanting to engage but without luck" from Carlo Lauricella. Such a pity you are not here in Germany, I think nobody here seems to know much about this problem.

    @@YepThatsIt Hey again, now we suppose that the tube for sucking in the hydraulic liquid to the pump is leaking. I bought the original tube from VW. We ordered the liquid as well, also I managed to buy an original vw "selbststudiengang 372" which describes the ShiftMatic very well. I recognized some of the illustrations you use in your video. :-) Also I bought the original Repair Guide. They all write we have to set the hydraulic pressure to zero with a diagnosis tool. So now we need a diagnosis tool. I learnt that this is difficult because parts are VW and other parts (like the gearbox) are DB. So we decided to give the autoaid-system a try and are now waiting for the hardware. Do you perhaps have another recommendation? I would be very happy for any suggestions concerning our problems. Also we have trouble with the AddBlue.

    Great! Thanks! I have a problem with my mb sprinter with same geat box. Sometimes it wont change to Automatic from Neutrall. Only in 1st gear. When i am on the road its ok but in traffic jam when you need to use 1st-2nd-1st it can drop of to Neutrall again. I will check all connections tommorrow but maybe you have some experience in that kind of problem?

    hi, check all the basics first. then go on to check accumulator is gassed up as well as solenoids and actuators are working. you will need to test the solenoids & actuators when they warm up as well. often they fail when they warm up as the coils resistances increase with heat. cheers

    Great video mate,well explained in terms I understand. I have problems shifting into reverse gear more so when It's cold,and neutralisers a lot going from 3rd to 4th. Any ideas. 2011 VW Crafter With 6 speed shiftmatic. Done 156000kms.

    hi, have you checked basics first like fluid level and fully charged and strong battery? you would have to also check the shift actuator to make sure it is selecting properly. they are a bit complicated with many things to check first. the pumps wear out commonly on these. cheers

    Awesome ! Thanx! Trying to change the oil´s Today and se if it fixes my problems... I read some comments but haven't seen exactly my problem... Mine are: When breaking for a "RoundAbout" or STOP-sign and fully stopp, The Gearbox falls "OUT OF GEAR" and it´s a bit annoying when It happens. in the middle of a "RoundAbout" or a Crossing and All the Honking starts.. And you just... Wait For it, Wait For it.... soon.... It also revs quite high before Switching... So im using the Manual often... AND in a slope almost every time have problem Going from N to F or N to R or F to R! it usually Starts blinking on one letter... Usually N.. And you have to go back to the N, it stopps blinking and next or 3rd or 4th try it might go into R or F... Is this a known problem? What might it bee??? Can you please give me a list IN ORDER what I should check and try fro this problem?? You talked about some "Normal Steps" or similar... What are those? Thanx a Million in Advance! If You Manage to Solve this for/with me! A WILL Buy You a Bunch of BEERS!!! 🙂 Sheers// TinnMan

    Having trouble getting reverse, sometimes neutralizes changing from 4th to 5th gear and has started neutralizing sometimes going back down through the gears to 1st. Also stopped at lights with foot on brake for a while will neutralize. Is this a possible mechanical or electrical problem, or is the whole box stuffed a needs a complete overhaul. Any advice would be great as i need this van for my business.

    hi, firstly always check the basics - battery fully charged and strong - fluid levels - electrical and hose connections on properly and not oxidised - check tbar selector hasn't worn out a linkage bush or similar etc, then see if you can get any fault codes out of it to indicate electrical issues. then you might do some oil pressure tests. hope helps cheers

    I wish I had you to diagnose my issue. Same as most people won’t go into gear, sometimes gives me F. Looks like something is leaking as the area is oily. I’ve been told the G270 hydronic sender seal can be an issue. How would I check gas in accumulator? Or check solenoids? I’ve spent a fortune on people who don’t properly know the shiftamatic and the problem comes back every year no matter how much I spend.

    Great video and very detailed! .. my VW Crafter is having selection issues when trying to select gear .. it's the auto manual box same as the one in your video .. do you think changing the auto oil will help or does it need a complete new pump?

    hi, it`s hard to tell without testing it ourselves. can you describe the selecting issues more? a service is a good start though and may show if you have wear or contaminants in oils. cheers

    @@YepThatsIt sorry for the delay in my response as I forgot i sent the message .. the transmission wont select and gears atm .. where are you located as I need to get it to a mechanic to see what might be going on ... any mechanic I have spoken to at this stage are too scared to go near it .. even some VW guys so I really stuck but need to get it working .. if i could test it myself or you have any recommendations that would be great.     ps .. the selecting issues .. the engine runs but seems a tad rough which could be the effect of the Gear box? when trying to select gear nothing happens but you can hears parts wanting to engage but without luck? .. when you try and select R nothing happens but after a few moment (30 sec) it then engages and jumps back

    @@carlolauricella5711... forget mechanics...take to an automatic transmission specialist....if you have checked all fluid levels.....and is problem only in reverse? then try checking the accumulator ( these are filled with nitrogen...could have leaked out ) or the actuators. there is also a filter in the bore on the left side of transmission ( one up from the lowest solenoid ). also there is a gear selection sensor on top of the transmission that has permanent magnets on it that can get contaminated ( try cleaning ) they are a complicated transmission, so break it down to little checks. maybe find a repair manual for it...hope that helps cheers

    Checked oil levels,main box was fine but small auto reservoir was a bit low. Changed oil topped up and all worked well after that for a month or so then started doing it again. My question is, is it possible for oil to get from small reservoir into main box? No oil leaks on outside of box or on concrete after being parked over night.

    Thanks, there is so little info out there on this type of gearbox. I have a Mercedes sprinter 2006, same gearbox. 716.643. I dont suppose you could do a video explaing how to get the gearbox casing open...

    hi, will purge air out itself, unless its sucking air somewhere or overfilled and spinning parts are aerating fluid. cheers

    hi, did you lose any fluid ? did you disconnect battery when you did it? did you hook up a power source to obd to not lose settings when you disconnected battery? any fault codes ? cheers

    @@YepThatsIt i have checked oil level and I did not disconect battery when removing the sensor, did connect vcds computer after and removed all error codes have removed battery afterwards in an attempt to remove the blinkning N, the codes i get is wrong presure from sensor.

    Copied from manual....The gearbox hydraulic pressure sender is mounted directly on the accumulator on the right hand side of the rear gearbox case. The gearbox hydraulic pressure sender determines the current pressure in the hydraulic system and transfers it to the electronic manual gearbox control unit. If the working pressure falls below 39 bar, the gearbox hydraulic pump relay is triggered by the electronic manual gearbox control unit and the hydraulic pump for gearbox is thus activated. At a pressure of 55 bar, the hydraulic pump for gearbox is switched off again. A diaphragm with strain resistors is fitted inside the pressure sensor. As soon as pressure is applied to the diaphragm, the resistances change due to the stretching. The resulting drop in voltage is converted into a pressure value by the electronic manual gearbox control unit. If the signal fails, the gearbox emergency mode will be activated. Gear changes are then only possible in manual mode up to 3rd gear. Automatic mode is deactivated. You could also have Nitrogen leak or Pump is worn ( which is common on these )

    Hey Great video I have a problem with my van. It won’t get in gear and if I getting in to 1st gear it jumps forward! I have check the pump is running and new oil change. If I turn off the engine the gearbox work fine! What can it be? Best regards Patrick
