Vulture Capitalism - Grace Blakeley & Jeremy Corbyn In Conversation

Grace Blakeley & Jeremy Corbyn talk about her new book Vulture Capitalism - the book you need to understand what is happening in the world around you - and what you can do to change it.
In Vulture Capitalism, acclaimed journalist Grace Blakeley takes on the world's most powerful corporations by showing how the causes of our modern crisis are the intended result of our capitalist system. It's not broken, it's working exactly as planned.
As Ha-Joon Chang says, 'Read this book if you want to make fundamental changes to the world.'
Hosted by Arise - A Festival of Left Ideas.

Its nothing short of a crime what the rancid British establishment did to this man. Yes, he could have been wiser/stronger in how he fought it but it still gets me ANGRY AF to this day…...

Actually, it was the greedy and uninformed British public who failed to support Corbyn. Truth be told, we don't deserve him, we deserve Starmer or lil' Rishi, that's about right for our hyper-individualism and entitlement,

What I thought was one of the interesting points in the book, is when she mentioned the Lucas Plan, and how workers came up with an alternative plan, which unfortunately wasn't followed, instead the company being sold off, chopped up and moved around various owners in a series of mergers/aquisitions. This highlights that in capitalism, there is planning, but its assumed to be something that only the owners and top stratum of managers can or should take part in, but this isn't the only way it could be.

Can recommend Grace's book - just finished it. Well researched and with an election coming up there are plenty of points one can use in opposition to the rants of the UK media which will undoubtedly rank up against anything that gives a hint of socialist common sense.

I live in Canada. It is basically a capitalist society like the U.S. but with a lot more socialism like many European countries. Most poverty is in rural areas, esp. in remote native communities. Their old way of life has been 90% destroyed but there are very few modern jobs.

I listened to her case study of Boeing. Bad example anyhow since this company operates in an industry which is not easily entered by new players. The obvious alternative is the soviet or chinese model which is state owned and controlled. The alternative produces a quality product but is it better? Not necessarily. She then started rambling about Donald Trump... I agree with union representation in company management on the basis of the German model...this woman has no coherent solution by the sound of it...

49:00 Jezza bang on the money, yet again. How Slavery ended is blatantly obvious if you look at the chronology. 1791 Haiti slave revolt against French 1793 - 98 Britain invades southern parts of Haiti abandoned by French, get evicted by the revolutionaries. 1807 Britain Outlaws the slave trade, but not slavery. It has slave colonies in the West Indies & S America, near Haiti. It also offered freedom to slaves who fought against US independence 1776-83. Sierra Leone was established as a British colony for former slaves (in W Africa, where slaves were taken from) in 1787. 1831 Christmas Slave Uprising, Jamaica 1833 Britain abolishes slavery 1837 Slavery Compensation Act pays out £20 million in compensation
