VULPEX KNIVES - VK1 Survivor / making a custom knife with CNC / how to make a knife

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hallo my foxes out there!
Today craftsmanship and future technology will meet. After a long time of brake, i want to show you my last knife design "VK1 -Survivor" made with my precise CNC machine "High-Z S-1000/T" from CNC-STEP. The prototype of it was 100% made full custom by hand. After that i decided to make a small series with the help of modern machining power. CAD/CAM was made with Fusion360. It was harder than expected to make it spot on with perfect fit and finish out of the CNC machine.
The knife is made out of 1.2510 tool steel with 3D machined, olive G10 handles. As always my overlapping copper liners are a part of my knife design.
Thanks for that awesome order, that aswesome opportunity and on top of that... the feedback after the time in use u gave me back!
Thanks for becoming a friend!

The problem you had with the endmill at 8:15 going through the stock stems from a bad Post Processor delivered with the High-Z by CNC-Step, it calls for G43 10 seconds after each operation starts. You need to edit the Post Processor and remove the line that adds the G43 which is only useful for automatic tool changers. Otherwise everytime you change a tool you run a chance of having the Z height changed after you set it in G54 after the program starts. This is a really unforgivable bug in the product but is easy to fix. I ruined by T slots several places and broke down many bits because of this.

Thanks so much Micheloud! I found this out some months ago now too... I got a new postprocessor so that the G49 is already changed from the G43 tool length compensation. Super thankful for that comment my friend !

Fantastic video! I just about fell off my chair when I saw you were doing this work with a CNC Step Hi Z machine! I have an old one and it is SO not accurate enough, even when it works it will lose 0.5mm accuracy on a handle slab in Micarta. No two scales ever match perfectly. The CNC forums said the machine was junk and I should cut my losses. Quite something to see a newer machine manages so well.

@@VULPEX_Knives Deffently harder if your trying to create one knife, but way simpler if your creating 10 or even a 1000 knives. Simplicity kinda multiples with the amount when using CNC machines. It's harder in the way that you have to calibrate your tools and machines, but also design the intire knife in a computer. Of course if you have alot of experiance/knownledge about this it's a walk in the park. I do enjoy the forging and hand grinding, but i also love CNC machines and CAD/CAM :P Well done no matter which method was used :)

I can’t agree on the “handmade” aspect. Was 90% done with CnC or other machines. What I can agree on is that is one sexy blade and “handmade” or not is some beautiful work and a very satisfying video!

Hey there Jeff. Thanks for your time and words 🙏 iam with you to some point. As I said in the video description, the prototype and first model of it was 100% made by hand. But what is 100% handmade? Where does it start and where does it end? I wanted to make a knife with my machines that I have available. I wanted to test if it fits to my goals and thoughts. And yeah... This is the result. Thanks so much for your kind words and critic ☺️🙏

Interesting, modern and classy knife build ... well done! I am an amateur knife maker and was interested in this router. I understand Cnc-step have come out with an upgraded model. Just curious, what Suhner spindle and also what stepper motors are on this machine. I noted on their site they offer a 1050 watt Suhner model. Is that suitable for steel cutting for knives? I would appreciate your advice. P.s. Your video quality is excellent too!
