The vowel diagram is an imaginary representation of the position of the tongue. it shows which part of the tongue is raised in the production of different vowels. it also shows the height of the tongue in such production. this video also explains the lips' position in the production of different vowels.
There are 20 vowel sounds in English. 12 pure vowels and 8 diphthongs. pure vowels can be classified into three parts:
1. Front Vowels 2. Center Vowels 3. Back Vowels
Pure vowels are Monophthongs that comprise only one sound whereas, during the articulation of diphthongs, we move from one vowel sound to another sound. Vowels are classified in terms of three variables in their articulation.
1. The part of the tongue which is raised or lowered
2. The height of the tongue
3. The position of the tongue
